The Omega award goes to a distinguished career. This year, it‘s Philip Roth. His “autobiography”, The Facts, is a work of art - nothing compares to it. He writes it with no humility. And then, he closes with a letter from one of his characters, calling him out on that. It shows the reader how he and his art give life to each other. It was a unique experience, & a reminder that not all of the White Men Canon should be dismissed.
pickI‘m kind of surprised at how great my October turned out. It didn‘t feel like it started that way, but I got a lot done.
And my favorite turned out to be The Facts. It‘s billed as Roth‘s autobiography. But it ends with a letter to him from one of his fictional characters, calling him out on some inaccuracies in the account. And in this way, Roth makes it even more truthful, even if the facts themselves aren‘t quite reliable. What a trick!
