The rumblings of war in distant countries mattered little to Danny McClain. Growing up in Chicago, his world revolved around after-school jobs, a rescued beagle, his pen pal in Holland, and the Cubs' chance to go to the World Series. Then, in December of 1941, during his first year at Northwestern University, news of the attack on Pearl Harbor hit much too close to home. After a series of unexpected events over the next couple of years, Danny found himself in the co-pilot seat of a B-17, stationed with the 390th Bomb Group in Framlingham, England. Anya Versteeg had been just a teenager when Hitler's troops invaded her homeland of Holland in May of 1940. Forced to grow up much too fast, the feisty preacher's daughter eagerly immersed herself in the Dutch Resistance and its many efforts to thwart the enemy. Certain that God had turned His back on Holland, she closed her heart and did whatever she had to do to save her country before it was too late. By 1945, the people of Occupied Holland were starving. Cut off from the outside world in retaliation for their failed attempt to oust the Germans invaders, the Dutch had no food, no electricity, no fuel, and little hope of surviving. Thousands were dying every day. Then, just days before the war ended, help came to The Netherlands like manna from heaven. Operation Chowhound held special meaning for Lieutenant Danny McClain. Somewhere below in the battered land of tulips and windmills was the girl who needed rescuing-after rescuing so many others. And he would move heaven and earth to find her.

Bailedbailed

This had a lot of good reviews on Amazon and was free for Kindle Unlimited. I gave it 96 pages and decided to call it quits. Everything just felt too forced to me- the dialogue, the relationships, etc. And the writing reminded me of a low quality middle grade book. I really wanted to like it-I love WWII historical fiction-but I just couldn‘t make it happen

1. Well it‘s “back” to school for my kids and I—even though we are still virtual. We‘ll be trying to get back in the groove.

2. There are some great trails about 2 minutes from where we live. A mom friend and I took our kids on a two hour hike. There was a little grumbling, but everyone ended up having a good time.

TheKidUpstairs Ugh, my kids are back to virtual school this week. We've been able to go in person since September, but numbers are up so this week is mandated virtual learning. But we've had zero communication as to what that is supposed to look like, so I have no idea what to do or if I'm supposed to be logging them on at a certain time or anything. (Sorry, that turned into more venting than I meant to do!) 3y
Cupcake12 @AmberWB My 10 y/o is back tomorrow at school but my 14 year is doing virtual learning until the 18th, feel confused as to whether I should let my youngest return. Trail hikes sound like great fun! Thanks for playing 😀 3y
AmberWB @TheKidUpstairs Trust me, I get it. We have been virtual since March 13th and whenever we seem to be getting into a rhythm, the county will completely change how everything is supposed to work. The day before a Christmas break, teachers got an email telling us that they are changing schedules and the length of classes for everyone. 😳 And they are starting to talk about hybrid again, but not telling us anything. 🤯 3y

#wondrouswednesday Thanks for the tag @Eggs !

1. The tagged book. I read it until around 4 am, mainly because of my chronic insomnia but also because I wanted to finish it
2. This happens frequently because #blameitonlitsy when I‘m trying a new genre, or reading new nonfiction. But the latest was a classic author that surprised the heck out of me how much I loved him: Charles Dickens!
3. remove and set aside, replace when done

Megabooks Thanks for the tag!! I hated Dickens in high school, but maybe I‘d like him now. 🤔🤔 4y
GingerAntics Dickens?! Wow, that‘s impressive. I liked having him read to me as a child, but every time I‘ve attempted to read him myself, I always end up lost. We use him as an example of the perils of really long sentences at work. “Don‘t be like Dickens or your readers are going to get to the end of the sentence and have no clue what your subject and verb are anymore.” 4y
sudi I think this is because of Litsy. but everytime i see some talking about Dickens i remember @Trashcanman and his love for Dickens 🙃 4y

Pickpick

I have never read a story of WWII in the Netherlands until now. It was heartbreaking. At one point, the horror for main character Anya is so detailed I had to stop reading. Fortunately the author turned back to the story of an American pilot who fell in love with Anya, now a damaged heroine, presumably the subject of the sequel. Reading about bombing Nazis is easier than Nazi atrocities. ⬇️

Texreader The pilot is based on the author‘s father, who advised on the book. This was a good choice because the level of detail about the bombing runs, life on base, and the loss of fellow soldiers in battle gives authenticity to the story. If you dislike characters relying on their faith to deal with the situations they find themselves, this book may not be for you. #readingeurope2020 #thenetherlands #litsyatoz #letterO Free on Amazon to prime members (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB Great review. I am from the Netherlands but haven‘t heard of this book. Will check it out now, thanks! 4y
Texreader @BarbaraBB Thank you. I learned so much about your country! I look forward to hearing what you think. 4y

Almost 5 hours for Saturday. #24b4monday #readathon

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Well done. 👏👏👏 4y
Panic70 I‘m a new Litsy friend. We live in the same city. 😄 Which might mean we live an hour and a half away from each other. 😂 4y
Texreader @Panic70 Hello new friend! I‘m very happy to make your acquaintance! I‘m in Alamo Heights. Whereabouts are you? 4y

Panic70 @Texreader I‘m sort of between Helotes and Leon Valley. It used to be called Babcock Texas. Or maybe it‘s easier to say I‘m closest to Maverick and John Igo libraries. It‘s nice to meet a litten close to me. 😁 4y
Texreader @Panic70 I know the area well! We‘ve several of us here in SA. One of my fave Littens is @Bookzombie so if you don‘t follow her yet, I highly recommend it. I‘m hoping to round us all up for a #litsymeetup at Jenny Lawson‘s bookstore when it opens here in AH. 4y
Panic70 @Texreader Sounds like fun! I‘d love to support a new book store too. ❤️ 4y
Panic70 @Texreader I just looked up Jenny Lawson and I‘ve read a couple of her books. She‘s just amazing and we‘re so lucky to have her chose SA to open a bookstore! 4y
Bookzombie @Texreader 😊You are too kind! I definitely look forward to a meetup at the new bookstore. Hello @Panic70 ! I‘m happy to see another Litten in San Antonio. I live near Converse myself. 🙂 4y
Panic70 @Bookzombie I can‘t wait to meet everyone at Nowhere. 😀 4y

Sounds about right! Texas winters are mysterious even to us. Although this year our winter has been mostly a consistent spring-like. Loving it...

I have to take breaks from this book; it is so intense. It switches between the story of Anya, a Dutch Resistance member trying to save Jews, & Danny, whose brother is stationed in Pearl Harbor (unknown if he is dead or alive yet). This chapter quotes President Roosevelt‘s radio address in its entirety. Once the book hit its stride, it does not give the reader a break from the horror. So I‘ve a lite kindle read I‘m switching to for a bit.
