This book was fantastic & educational to learn of this man‘s amazing life. The narrator of this version, Richard Allen, made me feel immersed in Douglass‘s narrative, as if he was reading his book to me himself. A great story of a life started in the hopeless depths of slavery, learning to read, his escape & role in emancipation, & finally Douglass‘s fight for the black suffragist movement & eventually began in the fight for women‘s suffrage, too.

Just some thoughts... Having recently completed Ibram Kendi‘s ‘Stamped from the Beginning‘, I was curious about his opinions of Frederick Douglass. Kendi comments that even Douglass becomes racist. I am starting to see this in the tagged audiobook, I am just over 1/2 trough. He has commented that he is not savage like the Indians, and how blacks don‘t need certain types of education, until they can prove themselves in the lower trades.

Chab256 I suppose I should know more about the man than I do as he lived in and was a prominent figure in Rochester, NY, where I live, for many years. The airport here is being renamed after him. 4y
Cosmos_Moon_River @Chab256 I think we all should know more about Douglass, and many others who are left out of the whitewashed history we‘re taught. Don‘t get me wrong, he was an amazing man and did amazing things. Some of his views become condescending, it seems as he goes through his life. I still think he should be honored and more well known in our history of America. (edited) 4y
SamAnne I bought the hard cover when it came out and still haven‘t read it yet. In the middle of Stamped from the Beginning and want to get to this bio this winter 4y
Cosmos_Moon_River @SamAnne I definitely want to read more of Kendi, and the other Douglass autobiography. I also listened to a Angela Davis book by recommendation of Stamped, and both Kendi and Douglas talk about Uncle Tom‘s Cabin, which I‘ve not read... the more I read the more books on my TBR. I‘ll never be bored. 4y

IN Talbot County, Eastern Shore, State of Maryland, near Easton, the county town, there is a small district of country, thinly populated, and remarkable for nothing that I know of more than for the worn-out, sandy, desert-like appearance of its soil, the general dilapidation of its farms and fences, the indigent and spiritless character of its inhabitants, and the prevalence of ague and fever.

Should we all chip in and send a copy to the WH? #tbr

BookishFeminist Sadly I think it would go unread 👀 8y
LauraJ @bookishfeminist We could all shell out $2 and send copies to the WH and get it on Amazon's bestseller list!? (edited) 8y
Dogearedcopy Unfortunately, he's probably only able to read 140 characters at a time... 😜 8y
LauraJ @Dogearedcopy After watching Maddow tonight, I'm wondering if 140 characters is being generous. 8y

“ If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. ”

This is really from his selected writings
