Sometimes I really like my city even if I don‘t like what‘s going on here right now. After spending two full days down at the Senate to protest Kavanaugh‘s nomination to the Supreme Court, I came here to reflect and read at one of my favorite spots. The Supreme Court is to the left, the Library of Congress is to the right with Congress on the other side (out of the photo). This book is giving me a lot to chew on in our current climate.

pgh.femme Oh, and it is such a beautiful city. I get teary eyed every time I visit when I remember that those buildings and their contents belong to “we, the people”. Even in these dark times I am moved by that. 6y
Valink I love that you protested! I‘ve only visited DC a few times & one was to look at schools with my daughter. She was wait listed at her top DC school, but considered going to another that she didn‘t really love just to be in DC and to be able to protest easily. I‘m a little disappointed she chose a different school! 6y

This book came on my radar when it was the first horror novel to be nominated for Canada‘s Giller Prize, and I‘m so glad it did! This was a great read. Old photos are peppered throughout the text as the author writes what he imagines are their stories, all connected to Eastern Europe, Romani, and Russian folklore and a small town in Canada. Fantastic format, lots of creep & suspense factor, and great writing.

Richard Rothstein is at my library tonight! He wrote my favorite books last year. He chronicles the government‘s direct creation of housing segregation, tearing down integrated neighborhoods to build segregated public housing. It‘s more segregated now than in45 years. I focused on housing law in at law school & have witnessed much of this first hand—it‘s devastating. I wish everyone would read his book bc it affects all of our social issues...

BookishFeminist ...like wealth inequality, income inequality, school segregation, school achievement gaps, health and life expectancy, class mobility, discriminatory acts, etc. It‘s a problem that has only gotten worse over the years and reinforces racial stereotypes that were created and reinforced by unconstitutional discriminatory government policy that many have largely overlooked for the underlying symptoms rather than the root cause of housing segregation. 6y
JamieArc This sounds like such a better choice than Evicted. It‘s an unpopular opinion, but Evicted read like poverty porn to me, and I was hungry for more information. Thanks for this post! 6y
BookishFeminist @JamieArc I disagree that it‘s poverty porn because it‘s very important people understand the gravity of what housing inequality does to families without completely bogging it down with policy, which many people glaze over at. But Desmond‘s book is investigative reporting rather than a more academic book like Rothstein‘s. They have similar messages but very different approaches and I love both. Matthew Desmond will be here in a couple weeks! 6y

It‘s finally nice enough to read outside!! ☀️🌿

I‘ve been having a hard time with novels and full length books this year so I‘m digging into some poetry. I‘m in love with the title of this collection and have always been fascinated by the history of Virginia State Colony.

azulaco This is on my TBR pile but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m eager to find a slot for it. The subject matter fascinates me too. 6y
BookishFeminist @azulaco It‘s really great so far! It‘s a quick read even for poetry. I‘ve been fascinated by this former hospital since grad school bc it was the subject of a Supreme Court case that basically legalized eugenics. 😳 So many scary but interesting corners to peek into in our history. 6y
azulaco @BookishFeminist Oh wait, was this where Carrie Buck was? 😟 Or are you talking about a different case? I have done some reading on the subject of American eugenics and mental health. It‘s so sad and scary. 6y

I immediately checked out Tidbeck‘s recent novel Amatka when I finished this. Her writing is magical and mysterious, seamlessly weaving together Swedish folklore and the supernatural with everyday life. Each story in this collection is captivating and unique. Her storytelling & quirkiness reminds me of Samantha Hunt, Kelly Link, and Helen Oyeyemi, but different. Tidbeck translated it herself which really makes the stories shine. 🧚🏼‍♂️🌲

Pickpick

I loved this short little book. This is Pearl‘s coming of age story, a quirky albino girl living in a car with her mom in Florida. Pearl narrates with clipped language that is full of metaphor. It‘s an indictment of how America‘s gun culture is a danger to ourselves when it‘s meant to protect. It paints a stark portrait of homelessness & foster care while examining spiritual connections between people & the fleeting nature of relationships. 🔫🐊

Getting the holiday weekend off to a good start with this AMAZING book and Christmas cookies. 🎄

I‘ve been saving this to read for when I just needed something to blow my socks off, and it hasn‘t disappointed. I‘ve sped through most of it since last night, which I rarely do with short stories.

Cinfhen Hi!!! Feel like I haven‘t “seen” you in months!!! Hope all is well 6y
ClairesReads I‘ve got this on order. Glad to hear it‘s going well for you 6y

The Best of Richard Matheson | Richard Matheson
post image

I‘m enjoying some late night solace and reading horror books. I‘ve managed to go a my whole life without ever reading Richard Matheson even though I‘ve been familiar with his more popular works. Now I‘m obsessed. Victor LaValle had hooked me in. These short stories give excellent creep. 💀

Betty He wrote some Twilight Zone episodes? I'm in! 6y

bohemian_yogini Enjoy! I personally thought it read like I was having an informal conversation with the author. Can be a little dis-jointed in places... but overall it‘s a fun read filled with interesting info! ❤️ (edited) 6y

I‘m spending it inside reading, baking Christmas cookies, watching way too much Great British Baking Show, and drinking hot chocolate. I may have spiked it. 🍾🙊 #booksnbucks

I‘ve not been around lately because I‘ve been very sick and dealing with some personal emergencies. It‘s been a rough year. But I‘m on the mend and reading again! I‘m hoping to be around more now, fingers crossed. 🤞🏼

I‘ve been reading these today for some healing and positivity. They‘re both excellent. Nasty Women has been the look at the election I needed, and Electric Arches is so uplifting.

#socialjustice #poetry

Anton Electric Arches is so wonderful. I have the paperback but I want to get the audiobook as well to hear Eve read her poems. 6y
ElishaLovesBooks Glad you‘re feeling better!💛 6y
BookishFeminist @Anton I hadn‘t even considered that. I‘m really interested in that too, now. Poetry audiobooks are some of my favorites. 6y

obviateit @BookishFeminist I'm glad to see you're feeling better! I've missed your posts! It's been a rough year for me too. I've been back here more consistently for almost a month, and I was disappointed to not "see" you here as much. I hope things keep looking up for you. ?❤️ 6y
BookishFeminist @obviateit thank you! I think a lot of us have had rough years- for me it hit from all angles and the political climate hasn‘t helped. I‘m glad you‘re back too and hope 2018 is much better for the both of us! ❤️ 6y
8little_paws Yay!! Sending so much love your way. It's been a hell of a year. My life on December 31 will look barely anything like it did on January 1. And looking at next year, even more changes on the horizon. So I feel you. I hope you continue on your path of feeling better!!!💙💙💙 6y

Only a few pages into this book and I can already tell it's going to be excellent. All politics are "identity politics" and using that term to describe certain causes over others is dog whistling. ??

Reading while I wait for @deborahcaldwell to join me for dinner! I set this down a little while ago because it was so good I didn't want my bad reading mood lately to sully it. Trying to pick it back up tonight. LaValle is a heck of a writer! In my cup: Moscow mule. 🍹📖

The Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle
post image

In case you missed the announcement over at @LitsyFeministBookClub, we're reading THE BALLAD OF BLACK TOM this month! It's an amazing novella that challenges and subverts Lovecraft's racism. Since it's a retelling, feel free to read THE HORROR AT RED HOOK by HP Lovecraft too. It's not long and would be great to compare the two.

Hope you'll join us!
