All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes
All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes | Maya Angelou
8 posts | 14 read | 14 to read
In 1962 the poet, musician, and performer Maya Angelou claimed another piece of her identity by moving to Ghana, joining a community of "Revolutionist Returnees" inspired by the promise of pan-Africanism. All God's Children Need Walking Shoes is her lyrical and acutely perceptive exploration of what it means to be an African American on the mother continent, where color no longer matters but where American-ness keeps asserting itself in ways both puzzling and heartbreaking. As it builds on the personal narrative of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Gather Together in My Name, this book confirms Maya Angelous stature as one of the most gifted autobiographers of our time. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Unpopular opinion. I understand why people enjoy her (I love her poetry). This is easily digestible, and well written But this is my first of her biographies, and I find her arrogant and self absorb, and wow does she just expect to land in this country and be handed things.

#QuotsyMay18 Day 2: What is your #Comfort place? And yes, Home need not necessarily be a place or a country. For me, personally, it is where my books are.

I sat and devoured the first half of this last night, and made myself put it aside for another read. I didn't know Maya Angelou relocated to Ghana for a while in the 1960s. This could be seen as an ancestor of Homecoming and Americanah and it's a memoir!

ValerieAndBooks A very good series! 7y
