Immortal Life
Immortal Life: A Soon To Be True Story | Stanley Bing
13 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
An ancient mogul has bought the power to live forever, but the strong young body he plans to inhabit has other ideas. The battle for immortal life begins. Immortal Life. A fantasy. An impossible dream. For now, maybe. But as we speak the moguls of Big Tech are pouring their mountain of wealth into finding a cure for death. Dont tell them they wont succeed. None of these titans is richer than Arthur Vogel. This inventor, tech tycoon, and all-round monster has amassed trillions (with a T) and rules over a corporate empire stretching all the way to Mars. The newestand most expensivelife extension technology has allowed him to live to 127 years, but time is running out. His last hope to escape the inevitable lies with Gene, a human being specifically created for the purpose of housing Arthurs consciousness. The plan is to discard his used-up old carcass and come to a second life in a young, strong body with all appropriate working parts. But theres a problem: Gene. He may be artificial, but he is a person. And he has other ideas. As Arthur sets off to achieve his goal of world domination, Gene hatches a risky plan of his own. The forces against him are very, very rich, extremely determined, and used to getting what they pay for. The battle between creator and creation is joined as the two minds wrestle for control of one body. This story is real. The tech is in development. The sponsors are the titans of industry well known to you. Eternal life may very soon be at the fingertips of those who can afford it. Mixing brisk action, humor, and wicked social commentary, Immortal Life imagines a day just around the corner. Welcome to a brave new world that is too familiar for comfortand watch the struggle for humanity play out to the bitter end.

I liked the overall concept, a satire on the future where corporations rule & tech controls. While the author spends a lot of time explaining some things (mostly the techie stuff) in too much detail, he fails to adequately develop the characters. The world-building, even though it is supposed to be our “future”, could have been fleshed out a bit more too.

#roaringwolf Sept SciFi warp speed
#bookspin for Sept (yay! I‘m back on bookspin track🥳)

Moonprismpower Have you read All Our Wrong Todays? It‘s a time travel book and it‘s enjoyed it. Not hard sci-fi FYI. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
wanderinglynn @Moonprismpower I have not read that one. I‘ll have to check it out! Thanks! 3y

Day 3 of #20booksin20days
Book 4 for my #SFFTBRChallenge, prompt: lowest rated on Goodreads.
And I can say it has the rating for a reason. The author completely missed the point of the book.
And, sadly, this reads like a book by a rich, white, male businessman, which it is.

julesG My leaky brain needs to know, does the #SFFTBRChallenge last until 31 Dec or until June next year? I forgot. 6y
DuckOfDoom @julesG Until June! 6y
julesG Goodie! Thanks! 😘 I might get a lot more than 15 read then. 6y

The only post worthy quote I found in the book, but it‘s certainly one to hold onto. 💚

3/5💚s

Really intriguing concept & a great exercise in philosophy (though likely not intending to be) related to technology, what it means to be human, & what is good for humankind. Character development is to be desired though the main character, Gene, is likable. Had a few areas which needed to go more in depth. Learned lots of words not frequently used. Overall, it‘s a one of a kind read that makes you think! 🤔 💭

Reading in this lovely weather while the kids use spray paint chalk to decorate the driveway, sticks, and...themselves. 😬

17% completed. Thoughts so far:

1) there are a lot of unnecessary complicated words which require me to look them up. It‘s somewhat inconvenient and pulls attention from the story. Not sure if it‘s a related to plot or the author thinks he‘s a smarty pants and was being arrogant. Either way, great opportunity to learn new words.

2) Philosophers/ethicists would have a field day with this book, especially regarding consent & ethics of technology.

My most recent trip to the bookstore resulted in the adoption of these two beauties. But idk if I want to start reading one or wait till after Mother‘s Day to decide (I‘ve been told I have 4 books coming my way!). Decisions decision. What day you Litsy?!?!

I have some work related books to tide me over till Mother‘s Day so I will not be without the written word, but sometimes you need to throw in a fun book.

The first 150 pages are a rush and create an interesting world. But honestly the book is nearly unreadable by the end. The ideas on technology and modern life are sure to be polarizing. It‘s unfortunate that the execution of this promising premise is so poor. #whenscifigoesbad

Owlizabeth Ooh, thanks for this. I keep almost bringing this one home from the library! 7y

Ugh. I don't even know where to begin. Stopped at page 52. Couldn't read another sentence. This book is trying to be scary and satirical and is utterly failing at both. Flat characters, boring story, and I can't tell if this author really believes the things he is writing or if it is all a joke. Either way, he hasn't managed to make me care enough to continue reading.

Imagining the immortal life of a billionaire with no soul (at least not as far as I got in the audio) was just too much for me. Gross, man. If you want to hate rich, privileged, white men more than you already do, this is the book for you.

riversong153 I just saw the author on CBS speaking about this book this morning. Based on what his interview, I am NOT interested in this at all. 7y

That weird feeling when you swear you've read a book before, but it's impossible. Listening to this now. Maybe I read a pre-pub excerpt somewhere? No clue. 🤔

mtwhitehorse Wow! Know that feeling all too well 💯👍 7y
