Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (Revised)
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (Revised) | Kate Wilhelm
9 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
The Sumner family can read the signs - the droughts and floods, the blighted crops and, above all, the increasing sterility point to one thing. Their farm in the Appalachians provides the ideal place to survive the coming breakdown - but men and women must clone themselves for humanity to survive. But what then?

#BookReport
Only managed to finish my commute book this week. I also am in a bit of a reading slump and haven't made much time for eye reading.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finish GMatLP because I have a substitute shift where there is very little actual work to do. I'd also like to make more progress on OaFK.

This is a high so-so almost a low pick because this is very much an ideas novel versus a character/plot one. The main conflict is conformity and the collective against the individual and ingenuity.

I liked this a lot. I think it was a brilliant post apocalyptic story with clones, and the best-written sci-fi I've read for a long while. I'm happy that I came across this book though the Lady Vaults Goodreads group.

Congrats @readinginthedark on 50k!

Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang and Station Eleven are 2 of the most wanted on my vast Want to Read list. The former has been on my radar for many many years and the author, Kate Wilhelm, who just recently passed away, was an influential writer and mentor. The latter made a big splash a few years ago when it came out.

Thanks for the opportunity!

readinginthedark Ooh, I love the cover on the tagged book! 7y

Similar to The Road, this is yet another book that is a solid example of the dystopian genre but doesn't do anything groundbreaking or new. The pacing is off with entire decades passing between the very short chapters. The beginning was awful, and I almost put it down. It gets much better once the world as we know it ends. I'm happy to have read this science fiction classic that was written by a woman but I can't highly recommend it.

I won The War of the Worlds on a Goodreads giveaway 🤓 I love the SF masterworks collection. For me, it was a great way to get into #scifi as pretty much everything on the list is a classic.

Ermahgad, I'm continually amazed by the thrift shop book finds! I'm pretty sure the first three haven't been cracked - brand freaking new, all under $3. The one on the right is one that's been on my TBR for a while that my library doesn't have - so excited to trip across it! #thriftscore #bookhaul #stickers4eva #cantstopwontstop
