The Golem and the Jinni
The Golem and the Jinni | Helene Wecker
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.Struggling to make their way in this strange new place, the Golem and the Jinni try to fit in with their neighbors while masking their true natures. Surrounding them is a community of immigrants: the coffeehouse owner Maryam Faddoul, a pillar of wisdom and support for her Syrian neighbors; the solitary ice cream maker Saleh, a damaged man cursed by tragedy; the kind and caring Rabbi Meyer and his beleaguered nephew, Michael, whose Sheltering House receives newly arrived Jewish men; the adventurous young socialite Sophia Winston; and the enigmatic Joseph Schall, a dangerous man driven by ferocious ambition and esoteric wisdom.Meeting by chance, the two creatures become unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures, until the night a terrifying incident drives them back into their separate worlds. But a powerful menace will soon bring the Golem and the Jinni together again, threatening their existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice.Marvelous and compulsively readable, The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of folk mythology, historical fiction, and magical fable into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.

I think I'm actually further along, but my bookmarks aren't syncing from device to device. Anyway, I'm just not digging it (it's sooooo slooooow and boring, so far), so I'm bailing at 1:05:26 / 6%.

I'm actually pretty bummed about this—I've been looking forward to reading it for a long time. Maybe someday I'll try again.

We meet a golem who was created as the "perfect wife" for her master who then dies, and she has to find her own way in New York City, and a jinn that comes out of a bottle and lives with a Syrian immigrant tinsmith. The two could not be more different, but as two outsiders as magical creatures in a human city they meet and begin a friendship. This delightful story gives a unique take on the immigrant experience in turn of the century NYC.

Avanders I really enjoyed this one ☺️☺️ 3mo

Very well done audio! I really enjoyed this story of 2 magical beings from across the ocean end up finding each other in early 20th century New York and their struggling with navigating in the human world. I believe this book is now a series, but it certainly serves as a stand-alone. I don‘t think i‘ll read its sequel because I‘m happy with where the story ended and don‘t want to be disappointed by anything after.

I am loving this #audiobook 🥰 such a wonderful weaving of fairytale and reality.
It also made me wonder the other day- if you were made of an element (fire, earth, wind, water, metal, wood, etc) which would you consider yourself to be made of? And why?

DannyHattan I‘m going with Earth, so much you can do with it 😂 @LibrarianRyan 8mo
DannyHattan Oh and what are you choosing @Andrea4 🤗 8mo
Andrea4 @DannyHattan I've thought about that often...what powers the different elements might yield. I feel strongly that I would either be made of earth or wind. I don't know what it is about standing in gusting wind, but it makes me feel free. 8mo
Andrea4 @DannyHattan and what exactly would you "do" if you were made of earth? 8mo
DannyHattan @Andrea4 consume everything!!! 😂 it‘s brilliant watching nature reclaim developed parts of the world. Love seeing that. 8mo
LibrarianRyan @DannyHattan toss up. Fire, because as I have the power to destroy, I also have the power to create. I can be effected by the changing winds of time, but also venerable to the elements. But then I also think metal. All are strong, but some flexible, moldable. It can be changed as needs demand. Yes metal can be used for war, but also for protection. So no easy answer. 8mo
Mdargusch I am drawn to water so I‘m going with that. It‘s gives life but there is a power behind it too. 8mo
Andrea4 @DannyHattan best answer! Slow 👏 8mo
Andrea4 @LibrarianRyan if you had to choose between metal and fire, do you have a gut reaction? 8mo
Andrea4 @Mdargusch water is lovely! And so mercurial, though really so are all the elements. 8mo
LibrarianRyan @Andrea4 I think my gut says metal. Josh says fire. 8mo

Decided to reread this beloved book on audio for book club before tackling my next frontlist title on Scribd. Only to find myself capped. Bit late to the party on this as it's a few years old - not sure when it was released in the UK. Also not entirely sure how to categorise it - not exactly fantasy or fairy tale but somewhere in between. Turn of the century New York setting a bit reminiscent of the All of a Kind Family books, which I loved as a child. Interesting idea and well told story. Delighted to learn from Litsy that a sequel is due out soon. A gentle and heart warming book.

TOTALLY engrossing! One of the best books I‘ve read all year! I can‘t believe this was Helene Wecker‘s debut novel! Entirely deserving of all these exclamation points!

Part historical fiction & part genre fiction, this story realistically portrays immigrant neighborhoods in NYC at the turn of the 20th century & infuses the setting with a hearty dose of Jewish mysticism & Middle Eastern lore. The characters are complex; the writing, flawless.

monalyisha Note: I loved thinking about the parallel between the golem‘s developing independence & the fight for women‘s rights. 13mo
