Finding Yvonne
Finding Yvonne | Brandy Colbert
13 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
For fans of Nicola Yoon and Nina LaCour comes a striking novel about difficult choices from acclaimed author Brandy Colbert. Since she was seven years old, Yvonne has had her trusted violin to keep her company, especially in those lonely days after her mother walked out on their family. But with graduation just around the corner, she is forced to face the hard truth that she just might not be good enough to attend a conservatory after high school. Full of doubt about her future, and increasingly frustrated by her strained relationship with her successful but emotionally closed-off father, Yvonne meets a street musician and fellow violinist who understands her struggle. He's mysterious, charming, and different from Warren, the familiar and reliable boy who has her heart. But when Yvonne becomes unexpectedly pregnant, she has to make the most difficult decision yet about her future. From the author of Pointe and Little & Lion, comes another heartfelt novel about the twists and turns that can show up on a path meant only for you.

Yvonne‘s in her senior year trying to decide what to do but has never gotten over the abandonment of her mom at 7 yrs old. Her relationship with her father is non-existent since he is a chef and owns his own restaurant so she doesn‘t see him often. Yvonne for me felt like a real character. She made very human mistakes especially for being 18 and approached them with maturity and honest communication. I really enjoyed this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Kenyazero A so-so rating on a book you really enjoyed always bodes well to me! I also love this picture. 3y

Yvonne is a young violinist who is trying to decide what to do when she just doesn‘t feel passion for playing anymore. I really liked this storyline, but the family and romantic relationships were not quite as interesting for me.

Starting this one...had to push back my hold on the 19 hour 😳 non-fiction about racism in America because I just don‘t have the bandwidth to deal with that heavy a topic right now. Cover art looks very much like the book I just finished (Fumbled).

LiteraryinPA Whoa, the covers are SO similar! 5y

Bit tough to sum up, some of it worked really well for me and some left me frustrated. Yvonne felt very real and I came to care about her, and I really liked the relationship dynamic with her father. The story tackles some difficult topics and mostly handles them well. But some of the messages were pretty heavy-handed, even if I did generally agree. And while I agree that slut-shaming is BS, I loathe cheating, and didn‘t like her excuses. 3/5 ⭐️

Pickpick

This book begins as a story about a young woman, trying to navigate her personal life a chart a path to the future. This book ends with this main character making tough choices and handling her grown folks business. I enjoyed it, but it had me stressed because it got super real, super fast. If you read it..holla at me when you hit Part 2. #yalit #blitsy #blacklitsy

This month in reading is especially impressive given that I moved mid-month!

Tamra Those cards would make terrific bookmarks - could leave notes about each book and leave in as a reminder. Where did you get them? 7y

shgmclicious I may blatantly steal this idea because I don‘t know what to do with my cards like that and I‘m trying to find a more interesting way to keep on top of my reading stats. Love Tamra‘s idea too! 7y

What a fantastic read about growing up and finding the right path for you. I love Colbert's writing so much. Put this on your TBR for August if you've loved the authors other books, love Nina LaCour, or want a story about a black girl finding a way to build a future she wants.
