Yvonne‘s in her senior year trying to decide what to do but has never gotten over the abandonment of her mom at 7 yrs old. Her relationship with her father is non-existent since he is a chef and owns his own restaurant so she doesn‘t see him often. Yvonne for me felt like a real character. She made very human mistakes especially for being 18 and approached them with maturity and honest communication. I really enjoyed this book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Yvonne is a young violinist who is trying to decide what to do when she just doesn‘t feel passion for playing anymore. I really liked this storyline, but the family and romantic relationships were not quite as interesting for me.

Starting this one...had to push back my hold on the 19 hour 😳 non-fiction about racism in America because I just don‘t have the bandwidth to deal with that heavy a topic right now. Cover art looks very much like the book I just finished (Fumbled).
Bit tough to sum up, some of it worked really well for me and some left me frustrated. Yvonne felt very real and I came to care about her, and I really liked the relationship dynamic with her father. The story tackles some difficult topics and mostly handles them well. But some of the messages were pretty heavy-handed, even if I did generally agree. And while I agree that slut-shaming is BS, I loathe cheating, and didn‘t like her excuses. 3/5 ⭐️
Probably half the people I know wouldn‘t talk to anyone if they couldn‘t text.

Howie and I are HERE for new Brandy Colbert. 🙌🏻 #yalit #weneeddiversebooks #wndb #ownvoices #howiereads
This book begins as a story about a young woman, trying to navigate her personal life a chart a path to the future. This book ends with this main character making tough choices and handling her grown folks business. I enjoyed it, but it had me stressed because it got super real, super fast. If you read it..holla at me when you hit Part 2. #yalit #blitsy #blacklitsy
I'm turned up to a 10! I won an ARC of this book and I'm so excited!! 🙌🏾📚💖

This month in reading is especially impressive given that I moved mid-month!
What a fantastic read about growing up and finding the right path for you. I love Colbert's writing so much. Put this on your TBR for August if you've loved the authors other books, love Nina LaCour, or want a story about a black girl finding a way to build a future she wants.
