A week's holiday in a luxurious Yorkshire time-share is just whatScotland Yard's Superintendent Duncan Kincaid needs. But the discovery of a body floating in the whirlpool bath ends Kincaid's vacation before it's begun. One of his new acquaintances at Followdale House is dead; another is a killer. Despite a distinct lack of cooperation from the local constabulary, Kincaid's keen sense of duty won't allow him to ignore the heinous crime, impelling him to send for his enthusiastic young assistant, Sergeant Gemma James. But the stakes are raised dramatically when a second murder occurs, and Kincaid and James find themselves in a determined hunt for a fiendish felon who enjoys homicide a bit too much.

Catching up since I need to focus on something else this week.

I have not read any Deborah Crombie but we share a first name (different spellings) & she‘s also a case where the #AuthorSharesYrInitials I actually have this book on my Kindle TBR. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Eggs Well done👏🏻📚🧡 1y

This one is a little bittersweet. For one thing it‘s almost the end of #20series20days

Also, I remember listening to the audiobook on my way home from work in late February in preparation for book club and to “tune my ear” for a trip to UK in late March. Instead, book club was canceled that month, and the trip has been postponed indefinitely.

Nevertheless I enjoyed it very much and plan to take up the series again eventually.

#Top20series

Ruthiella I‘ve also only read the first book in this series. I hope you get to the U.K. someday! I planned to go to Scotland this fall but also had to postpone...🥺 4y

• ModernMrsDarcy.com 2020 Summer Reading Guide

Scotland Yard investigator, Duncan Kincaid, is on a relaxing vacation at his Yorkshire timeshare. When someone mysteriously dies in the swimming pool, Duncan goes into investigation mode. When a second death occurs, the game is on. This is one of the better “cozy mysteries“ that I‘ve read. I‘m going to have to put Debora Crombie on my TBR list.

MallenNC I have the audio of this and need to listen. I didn‘t know it was considered a cozy. Do you think it‘s like Louise Penny? 4y
suvata @MallenNC I am not a huge fan of Louise Penny so I really couldn‘t compare the two. However, I found it very much to be like Agatha Christie or Conan Doyle. 4y
MallenNC @suvata Good to know. I was thinking it may be like Penny in that there‘s a police character but it‘s still sort of cozy. I will listen to it at some point! 4y
kspenmoll I love this series. The characters etc only get better. 4y
suvata @kspenmoll I‘ve got them all on my TBR list so this is good to know 4y

Recommended by Anne Bogel, this is the first book in a British mystery series that‘s somewhere in the middle between dark/gritty and sweet/cozy. There‘s also a hint of some nice interaction to come between the two main characters. I‘m glad I listened to the audiobook version, as the narrator did a good job with various accents that helped “tune my ear” for my trip to the UK for #readingretreat2020 in a few weeks.

This is the first Kincaid and James mystery and I enjoyed it. A good start to the series. It was a little slow to begin, but reads quite quickly. I found the story to be clever and the characters engaging. Now to binge read the rest of the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

emtobiasz I binged the first 8 earlier this year, then needed a break. I should pick them back up, though— only 10 more to go! 😂 5y
Suelizbeth @emtobiasz LOL! I love it when there are so many books in a series, though. I‘ll have to pace myself! 😹😹 5y

I was looking for a new detective series, but this is a bit too cosy for my liking, so I think I'll leave it here.

rretzler Interesting...it‘s been a while since I‘ve read the first one, but I‘ve read all the books in this series and I wouldn‘t call them cozy. Of course, I guess it depends on what your definition of cozy is - I think everyone has a different definition. This is a fairly standard British police procedural series and IMO is one of the better ones , due to the characters. Crombie is similar in style to Elizabeth George but her books are not as lengthy. 6y
sophierayton Yes, I think it comes down to scale. While this isn't a straight up cosy, it is on the cosier side imo. I was looking for a readalike for series like Robert Galbraith and Louise Penny, this author and series was recommended and I found it a bit tame for my liking. 6y

Wow, I devoured this first mystery in the Kincaid and James series. I‘ve been searching for a new mystery series after finishing up Martha Grimes a couple years back, and I think this might be what I was looking for. Written in 1993, this one feels classic without being too dated— plus, my library has them on audio on #Libby! #audiobook #mystery #procedural

My first Kincaid and Duncan book - I get a bit obsessive about starting in order with new mystery series, even though I don‘t have to. I enjoyed this and found it unpredictable. I‘ll be reading more, definitely. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the 1st book of the Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James Mystery series which is another of my favorite series. This series started in 1993 and now has 17 books of which I have read 8. I enjoy the relationship between Kincaid & James and it‘s best to read these books in order and watch their relationship grow. The books have a Christie feel to them and I enjoy them very much. You should give them a try. You won‘t be sorry!

Andrew65 I need to get to this series! (edited) 7y

The weather is nice and the tablet is charging, so I‘m taking a break from manuscripts and soaking up some sun with a tasty beverage and the first in this series. I‘ve read some of the later installments but I figure it‘s time to start from the beginning!

Started this series with the 17th book and loved it, so here I am back at the beginning💃🏻

Super fun cozy mystery. I picked it up after a few tougher reads-it was perfect for that. British setting. Awesome detectives in Duncan and Gemma. Poor Duncan thought he was going on vacation only to end up with a couple of murders to solve while there. Duncan is on the page most in this first installment-I‘m ready to see more of Gemma in books to come!

cathysaid @DivineDiana I'm really enjoying it so far. British mystery that's entertaining but not extremely complex...that's my usual audiobook fare. Otherwise, my mind wanders 😁 7y

raelaschoenherr @JulieAnn I've heard such good things, so I'm really excited to be starting it! I was listening to the Julia Spencer-Fleming series and had to wait for the library loan to come in so I shifted to this one :) 7y
JulieAnn @raelaschoenherr It is an awesome series and I've heard they may do a tv series. The books get better and better. My favorite in the series is Dreaming of the Bones but I have read each of them as soon as the come out! She's a great writer and the characters have a lot of depth. Also her settings are amazing. She does meticulous research apparently. 7y
JulieAnn I hope you love them as much as I do! I need to read the Fleming series! 7y

As I said here before, I've dipped into Deborah Crombie's Kincaid/James series off and on, and decided to spend this lazy Sunday reading the book that started it all. Share in Death introduces us to DS Kincaid and Sergeant James before they were Duncan and Gemma. It's a decent mystery, and kept me guessing to the end. An auspicious start to an excellent series.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I love this series! Some of my favorite characters and I also have learned so much about London history through these books. A new one out in early 2017 - finally!! 8y

Another great deep dive for summer. This is the first of 17 Duncan and Gemma mysteries set in and around modern London and Scotland. There's a police procedural element, lots of engrossing human drama, and a good balance of tough realism and hope for humanity. You'll want to eat them like candy.

Laura317 Always up for a good London mystery! I adore British lit. 9y
