Rachel's Holiday
Rachel's Holiday | Marian Keyes
The fast lane is much too slow for Rachel Walsh. And Manhattan is the perfect place for a young Irish female to overdo everything. But Rachel's love of a good time is about to land her in the emergency room. It will also cost her a job and the boyfriend she adores. When her loving family hustles her back home and checks her into Ireland's answer to the Betty Ford Clinic, Rachel is hopeful. Perhaps it will be lovelyspa treatments, celebrities, that kind of thing. Instead, she finds a lot of group therapy, which leads her, against her will, to some important self-knowledge. She will also find something that all women like herself fear: a man who might actually be good for her.

Between a pick and so-so for me, or 3 stars. Not my favourite Keyes, for sure (but I will continue the series haha).
I found Rachel hard to tolerate; for most of the book I wanted to smack her across the face (a reaction not relegated only her).
But obviously I liked it enough to keep reading.

This one took me by surprise. I was expecting light and frothy, but there‘s a darker story here too. I‘ve come to understand that Keyes has a remarkable talent for covering some serious subjects in a light, accessible way. My top read on June.

I‘m torn between a pick and a so-so. I think the Irish humour aspect make it a pick. But although I read this quickly I found the story a bit lacking. There were A LOT of characters and although I was rooting for Rachel the book just wasn‘t as enjoyable as I was expecting.

I‘ve not read a Marian Keyes novel before; I‘m not sure why. Based on this one, I think I‘ll read more. While some books written in the 90s haven‘t aged well, at least against my personal tastes (Bridget Jones, I‘m looking at you), Rachel‘s Holiday has an element of timelessness than makes it as good to read as a 50-something today as it would have been for a 20- or 30-something 25 years ago.

Started this in the bath with a big mug of hot chocolate with the bfg! Hot chocolate in June what‘s going on ? British weather that‘s what ! Anyway loving this already it‘s like reading the Derry girls . Page 19 when mum knows Anna is a junkie and now suspects Rachel is “ I don‘t know what they do with all that bloody tinfoil , I really don‘t , Anna goes through it like wildfire “🤣🤣

My current listen. It is pretty funny, and seems to be the favorite of her many novels.

Decided to re read this one so I could read the follow up. Took me a while to read it but it was a very enjoyable read. Full of humour and sadness and a real eye opener into the life of an addict

I read this years ago before I tracked my books, and decided to reread it because a sequel is coming out later this year. Rachel is a challenging MC because she‘s dealing with an addiction that she‘s not honest with herself about through much of the book. She‘s also pretty mean at times. But I ended up rooting for her again.

Rachel‘s Holiday is like an old friend, it never asks to much from me, it‘s always there, and it never disappoints me. This is quintessential Marian Keyes, an expert blend of humour, light drama, and exploration of serious issues. Rachel, like all Keyes‘ protagonists, is endearingly flawed and fallible. Her depiction of addiction and recovery is in compromised by the underlying humour and breezy tone of the narration. I‘ll keep coming back to this

vlwelser The sequel is coming out in the UK this year. I'm almost afraid to read it. This is one of my favorites. 2y

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Funny, sad and honest it had it all. I particularly enjoyed the shift from denial to acceptance about addiction. Overall well written and poignant
I haven‘t read anything else by this author but I will in the future

Reggie Oh this is my favorite of this author. She has other books that center around the different sisters of Rachel. 3y
Cazxxx @Reggie I would definitely read some more of her writing 3y

An open and painfully honest depiction of addiction seen through the eyes of the addict. The transformation from total denial to acceptance is brilliantly portrayed and the book explores the feelings and fears of someone so willfully addicted to substance abuse.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s so sad! I see this every day. Addiction, suicidal, and other behavioral patients. There are not enough facilities to care for them. AND Mississippi just passed Initiative 65 and not to be Debbie downer it‘s going to be a disaster! 3y

Thanks for another fun opportunity to play, @Rachel.Rencher #7Daysgiveaway
I don‘t know that I‘ve ever traveled anywhere that I didn‘t want to go home, but I certainly have a long list of places I‘d like to return to, including Italy and Ireland.

SamanthaMarie Oh Italy. Yes!! Agreed. I would love to go to Ireland (and Norway and Scotland and Sweden.) 6y
Tomigirl44 @SamanthaMarie Yes, Sweden 🇸🇪 Norway 🇳🇴 and Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 are also on my list (in that order, as I have family from Scandinavia, and I want to see the Scottish highlands) - that‘s why it‘s hard to think of returning to places, when there are so many more I want to see for the first time. 6y
SamanthaMarie My maiden name is Thorson and we are very very Norwegian so I'd love to go visit and meet some distant relatives. Yay Scandinavia! And that's a really good point. So much to see still! Though I do want to take my husband to Italy and Spain because he hasn't been before and I think he'd like both. 6y

Marian Keyes is one of my favorite #irishauthors. I'd guess that I read Rachel's Holiday easily once a year, though I love all of her books about the Walsh sisters. Do any of you have a favorite #mariankeyes book? #marchintoreading

Andrew65 I think Anybody Out There was my favourite, just pipped Rachel's Holiday for me. 7y
Andrea313 @Andrew65 I really liked that one, too! But it makes me so legitmately emotional that I don't return to it as often. So well-written, though. 7y
Andrew65 @Andrea313 It certainly pulled at the emotions and the heart strings. I defy anyone not to cry with that one! 7y
