Book Club Journal | Clare Double

I‘m looking for suggestions. I need books for book clubs that are compelling page-turners. What books have you been unable to put down lately? Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for recommendations for our next book club read. It's a coed group, and we just read American Gods.

BookishBeth The Girl With All the Gifts is a good one. My husband liked it and he's very picky about books I recommend to him. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The Natchez Burning Trilogy by Greg Iles?? They are so good!! 7y
Itchyfeetreader We just finished do not say we have nothing that went down well with the men and women in our group. Lots to talk about as well. 7y

I'm creating a neighborhood book club. I've never been in a successful book club before, and this is my first time leading one. Any advice?

TheKidUpstairs I'm thinking of starting one in my community, too! I was thinking of making it a BYO-Book Club, more a reason for people to get together and talk about books than a discussion of a particular book. Less pressure that way, I think. And probably a pretty good diversity of books. Are you thinking BYO or more traditional? 8y
Smwfitz That sounds like a really fun approach @TheKidUpstairs. I had not thought of that. I know one of my local library branches has a book club structured that way. I was thinking more traditional. 8y
KarynGood We started a neighbour club called the Sanity Seekers (we all had young children) about 15 years ago now. We're still going. But it's not so much about the books anymore. We still read one each month (except for July and Aug and Dec) but the discussion gets shorter and shorter unless it's a book everyone loves or hates! But I still love it! And I've read and loved so many books I never would have read! (edited) 8y

What are cozy mysteries?

MrBook Excellent question! They are mysteries that aren't gratuitous with blood and gore and violence and language. That's the primary qualifier. There's others, such as a usually more upper class or at least comfortable setting, there tends to be feel-good items sprinkled throughout like tea and sweets and crackling fireplaces and lovable pets. They're much lighter fare than typical mysteries. How'd I do? 😊 8y
Smwfitz Thanks @MrBook ! I totally get the picture. 8y
Gina Very nice @MrBook I totally concur! For me it would be Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot books. And my all time fave of hers 8y

We just booked our flights for our honeymoon in Italy! Any recommendations for great books set in Italy, preferably romantic stories?

MrBook Aren't the Ferrante books set in Italy? 8y
readinginthedark Oh, A Room with a View is one of my favorites. I'd like to go to Italy! Post some pictures when you go so I can live vicariously through you. 😉 8y

Nute So happy for you. A beautiful place with good food for a honeymoon vacation...sounds perfect. A favorite book of mine set in Italy is The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani. 8y
Ubookquitous If you are going to the Tuscany region (Florence, Pisa, Sienna) then try 8y
Smwfitz Thank you! @Ubookquitous @Nute @readinginthedark @MrBook I appreciate the suggestions and kind wishes. 8y

The Book Collector | Alice Thompson, Marina Warner

Library, bookstore, Amazon, thrift shop, etc. Where do you get your books and why? I mostly rely on the library to save space and money. I love buying books though, I can't lie!

QuothTheRavenclawNevermore I usually get them off of amazon, or from Barnes and Noble, and other various bookstores. I wish we had a second hand bookstore here! I would love to know of any cheap websites, too 8y
MyNamesParadise Usually Amazon, Barnes&Noble website, and even Target's website because they have great deals!! And I'm weird if a book is too used. 8y

Swing Time | Zadie Smith

I'm about 50 pages in to Swing Time on my kindle. I'm enjoying it so far. I like Smith's pacing and character descriptions. I've heard some criticisms about the book not having much of an outcome, but so far I'm really invested in the details. Let's see where this goes.

Pickpick

Late post in honor of International Women's Day. My best friend gifted me this fabulous book. I love the illustrations and the collection of brief bios on strong, ambitious, inspiring women who made their marks on the world.

I'm such a #restlessreader! I love to read. I usually read multiple books at once. I move through books slowly and am constantly getting excited about new books to read, and I get frustrated by how long it takes me to get to them. I am in awe by how much so many of you here on Litsy read. How do you make time to #readmorebooks ?

Megabooks Audiobooks 8y
ptkpepe98 I read several books at a time to, on my phone, tablet, and the old fashioned print version as well. A lot depends upon my mood. You know, what I have a "taste" for or what has piqued my interest. I will admit that being with this bunch is a bad, bad thing because my TBR pile is to the moon and back. I only joined in, like, October or November...? 8y
Gina Oh I feel your pain. **sigh** 8y

My first post! I just discovered Litsy yesterday and I've been enjoying it immensely. However, it's distracted me from this fantastic read. I've been on a #gaiman kick lately.

ptkpepe98 This was a great discovery, wasn't it? @Smwfitz? Check out the #LitsyAtoZ, a reading challenge organized by @BookishMarginalia, who also generously organized postal secret gift exchanges. I think one is coming up. I missed the Christmas one, but made it for the Valentine's one. A blast! Welcome! 8y
