Minority Leader
Minority Leader: How to Lead from the Outside and Make Real Change | Stacey Abrams
17 posts | 9 read | 19 to read
A guide to harnessing the strengths of being an outsider by Stacey Abrams, slated to become the first black female governor in the United States. Leadership is hard. Convincing othersand often yourselfthat you possess the answers and are capable of world-affecting change requires confidence, insight, and sheer bravado. Minority Leader is the handbook for outsiders, written with the awareness of the experiences and challenges that hinder anyone who exists beyond the structure of traditional white male powerwomen, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and millennials ready to make a difference. In Minority Leader, Stacey argues that knowing your own passion is the key to success, regardless of the scale or target. From launching a company, to starting a day care center for homeless teen moms, to running a successful political campaign, finding what you want to fight for is as critical as knowing how to turn thought into action. Stacey uses her experience and hard-won insights to break down how ambition, fear, money, and failure function in leadership, while offering personal stories that illuminate practical strategies. Stacey includes exercises to help you hone your skills and realize your aspirations. She discusses candidly what she has learned over the course of her impressive career: that differences in race, gender, and class are surmountable. With direction and dedication, being in the minority actually provides unique and vital strength, which we can employ to rise to the top and make real change.

On the one hand, being at work with absolutely no patrons is kiiiiinda‘ frustrating. On the other, it gives me a ton of time to read. Hanging with Stacey this evening has been a delight, I‘ve made lots of progress, and now it‘s almost time to go home! 🤷🏻‍♀️💖 #minorityleader #staceyabrams

skewermann Looks like a good wine with cheese, this book would be well-balanced with my paint-peeling parody of "Fire and Fury"... "Dire and Puny" ? 3y

Five chapters in, and while I wish this was more about her life/story - it‘s speckled in there, but it‘s mostly a guide to how to become a leader in your community, especially if you‘re part of a minority group - it‘s a really enjoyable read. She‘s so frickin‘ cool. 💙 #minorityleader #staceyabrams

1. Fill up at least one grocery bag‘s worth of things to declutter!

2. My back porch, for sure, but when it‘s too cold for porch-reading, I have a super-cute little couch that my friends were getting rid of!

3. I‘m a walking combination of Jo March and Hermione Granger! 💖

Thanks for the tag, @Sharpeipup , and getting this started, @Cupcake12 ! Tagging @ju.ca.no and @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks if you ladies are in! 💖

Interesting book on leadership. I was hoping for more information on Abrams herself but she doesn't divulge much.

Abrams was on Colbert‘s show and he insisted on reading from one of her romance novels, despite her saying no. She was nice but I guess because she was smiling and laughing it was ok for him to keep going. Romancelandia is not taking it that way and you‘d really think that by now people would know better.

LibrarianRyan I didn‘t realize it was the same person. So interesting, but yeah, not appropriate if she is there to talk politics. 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan I think she was there to talk about her book that she wrote under her real name being out in paperback - and a little bit politics. He threw the romance thing in at the end. And, honestly, if I didn‘t know all the negative things people say about romance I might not have seen it as mocking as some do. Also, we‘re trying to have a national conversation about consent so it‘s hard to see someone who seems like an ally not be one. (edited) 5y

This book spoke to me like no other guide to leadership before. The message I took from it is that it is not enough to want to lead and attain a position of authority. It is necessary to understand your motivation and lead with intent. And it‘s okay to admit that you have those ambitions while you‘re at it. Beyond being incredibly motivating, Abrams gives real, practical advice.

Ask for what you need. You are intimately involved in your daily life and aware of the complexity of your situation. No one else has that insight... Do not drop hints- they‘ll lie on the ground forever.

When you decide what you want and why you want it, take action immediately. Do not wait for an invitation to act. I promise you, the letter is not in the mail.

At its most complex, ambition should be an animation of soul. Not simply a job, but a disquiet that requires you to take action.

I am sick to my stomach and terrified for tomorrow. Not able to read so listening to my podcasts and cuddling with my kitty. There is so much on the line and people don‘t even realize 😢😢😢

Ashley_Nicoletto I‘m praying that they do realize. I have never voted in a local election before only the presidential ones. And I have already asked to take a long lunch tomorrow so I can go. 🙋🏻‍♀️ one more person right here hoping to make a change. Keep breathing my friend. 5y
Notafraidofwords It‘s awful. Not even attempting to read today. 5y

Thoughtful, insightful, practical, this-is-me approach with advice on turning thoughts into actions. Especially enjoyed her perspective on mentors, which was head on. Refreshing read. Recommend this one to anyone, regardless of whether they‘re interested in politics or not.

Stacey Abrams is currently running for Governor in Georgia. The organizing principal of this one is to give advice to other people (especially but not exclusively to other minority women) who want to lead. This appeals less than the author‘s personal anecdotes and stories. She is a remarkable leader and at her best when she is vulnerable and sharing her story. I look forward to casting my vote for her as the next Georgia Governor!! #netgalley

Schlinkles The bookstore I manage is doing an event with her and the League of Women Voters in May. I‘m very excited to hear her speak. 6y
