Daughters of the Winter Queen
Daughters of the Winter Queen: Four Remarkable Sisters, the Crown of Bohemia, and the Enduring Legacy of Mary, Queen of Scots | Nancy Goldstone
The riveting story of four unforgettable sisters and their glamorous mother, Elizabeth Stuart, granddaughter of Mary, Queen of Scots Elizabeth Stuart's life was transformed when her father, James I, ascended to the illustrious throne of England. Her marriage to a German count far below her rank was arranged with the understanding that James would help her husband achieve the crown of Bohemia. Her father's terrible betrayal of this promise would ruin "the Winter Queen," as Elizabeth would forever be known, imperil the lives of those she loved, and launch a war that would last 30 years. Forced into exile, the Winter Queen and her growing family found refuge in Holland, where the glorious art and culture of the Dutch Golden Age formed the backdrop to her daughters' education. The eldest, Princess Elizabeth, counted the preeminent philosopher Ren Descartes as her closest friend. Louise Hollandine, whose lively manner and appealing looks would provoke heartache and scandal, was a gifted artist. Henrietta Maria, the beauty of the family, would achieve the dynastic ambition of marrying into royalty, although at great cost. But it would be the youngest, Sophia, a heroine in the tradition of Jane Austen, whose ready wit and good-natured common sense masked immense strength of character, who would fulfill the promise of her great-grandmother Mary, a legacy which endures to this day.

In line with “I get knocked down, but I get up again...” I bring one of my favorite books from 2018. Goldstone highlights the Winter Queen, Elizabeth Stuart, who is descended from Mary Queen of Scots. In Bohemia, tensions rise as revolutions and wars in the various states look for an all-powerful ruler. Elizabeth will stop at nothing to make sure her family is in power. It‘s so good! #redroseseptember

Cinfhen I need to start reading all these British Monarchy books! Where should I start????? 3mo
arlenefinnigan Good choice 👍 @Cinfhen I hear Hilary Mantel's books are good. Not my kind of thing tbh. 3mo
Librarybelle @Cinfhen @arlenefinnigan Hilary Mantel does good work on the British monarchy. I think it depends upon where you want to start...each era has its own specialized historian. Dan Jones with the War of the Roses; Alison Weir with primarily Tudors. Goldstone has written on various eras. Of course, there are fiction books too! Lol! 3mo

This was interesting and I enjoyed it, but I have to admit that I lost track of who everyone was. I needed a family tree to refer to while I was listening.

Crazeedi This sounds like a great read! 4mo

Mary, Queen of Scots‘ descendants are pretty much #screwed . History tells us the fate of her grandson, King Charles I of England. But, at least in the US, history books don‘t discuss her granddaughter, Elizabeth, and her never ending struggle for Bohemia. Or, Elizabeth‘s daughters‘ struggles for power.

One of my favorite nonfiction books of this year...a captivating account of strong women whose stories deserve to be told. #NoFemmeber

Cinfhen Finally stacking this book!!!! To good not to read 13mo
Billypar Good pick- it's those stories in between the lines of history books that can sometimes be the most interesting 🙂 13mo

Another beautiful, historic read. This one was even cooler by the fact that I've been to the Heidelberg castle which they spoke of in here!

I do not know much about the 1600s and the Thirty Years War - this was a good introduction! Interesting to read about their relationships with Descartes and Leibniz. And interesting to read about how Sophia‘s line became the rulers of England!

If you love royal histories or books about strong women, you must read this! I loved it - the narrative, the witty/sarcastic humor throughout, and the overall story of how Mary, Queen of Scots‘ descendants played a role in history and helped shape today‘s British monarchy. Each woman had talents that have left a mark on the world. Amazing stories. 5 ⭐️

I received an ARC from @LittleBrownBooks from #NetGalley in exchange for a review...thank you!

I was set to use my brand new Book Beau book pillow, but somebody jumped into my lap. Guess I‘ll have to hold the book now... #Zeke #catsoflitsy

I have been thoroughly enjoying Nancy Goldstone's writing. Her footnotes and asides (judiciously deployed) crack me up.
