Look Back in Anger
Look Back in Anger | John Osborne
2 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
In 1956 John Osborne's Look Back in Anger changed the course of English theatre. 'Look Back in Anger presents post-war youth as it really is. To have done this at all would be a significant achievement; to have done it in a first play is a minor miracle. All the qualities are there, qualities one had despaired of ever seeing on stage - the drift towards anarchy, the instinctive leftishness, the automatic rejection of "official" attitudes, the surrealist sense of humour . . . the casual promiscuity, the sense of lacking a crusade worth fighting for and, underlying all these, the determination that no one who dies shall go unmourned.' Kenneth Tynan, Observer, 13 May 1956 'Look Back in Anger . . . has its inarguable importance as the beginning of a revolution in the British theatre, and as the central and most immediately influential expression of the mood of its time, the mood of the "angry young man".' Not book related, but I have to vent. I am livid.

This, right there, in the pic, is my 8yo son's milkshake. That milkshake, made for an 8yo at a family restaurant, had Bailey's in it. One full once. Now, my son is completely drunk, in a completely not funny way, because he's 8, and we have to make sure he doesn't have alcohol poisioning, because he's a small boy of 8 yo. And we don't have power back.

Lovesbooks87 Omg! That's awful! I hope he is okay. I would have told the restaurant about themselves! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Holy crap. That is awful. 😢🤬 6y
ShelleyBooksie I am sorry to hear that you are going through this. I hope that your son is OK 6y

LiteraryinLawrence This is absolutely terrible. Hoping your son recovers quickly. 6y
Kappadeemom What the heck?? That‘s awful. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Wow. That's...horrible. 😱 Hopefully everything turns out okay! What did the restaurant have to say for themselves? They could get in a lot of trouble for that... 6y
Suet624 What????? My gosh!!! 6y
Karkar Omg I hope he is okay! 6y
Smrloomis 😱 keep us posted??? 😣 6y

AmyG That is nuts. I hope he is ok. I can‘t believe they would serve that to a child! (edited) 6y
tournevis @Lovesbooks87 Oh, I told! 6y
Valink Yikes. I hope he‘s ok. That is so beyond unacceptable. 6y
Bklover Oh no!! I would report them to everyone I could think of. That‘s horrible!!!!!! 6y
RavenLovelyReads As the mother of an 8 year old- I can‘t even imagine what you‘re going through. I really hope all is well...poor baby...and mommy! 6y
tournevis @Valink @Bklover @RavenLovelyReads As I wrote previously, the signs are encouraging: he's having a good time. The phone calls tomorrow will be something else. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly That‘s horrifying! Who would do that to a child?! For that matter, who would do that to anyone, of any age, without telling them?! I‘m glad he seems to be doing OK. 6y
JoScho Oh my goodness! That‘s awful! 6y
Insightsintobooks That's horrible!!!!! I'm glad it sounds like your son is okay (aside from being drunk that is!!). I can't believe they would do that!! 6y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly I spoke to the person who did it. To be fair, they did not know they were preparing it for a child. I believe that much. They are new and they told me they were told that this recipe always had Bailey's. I believe that's what they understood, but not what they were told. It's an "option" in the menu. I checked. It is a glorious flustercuck. 6y
tournevis @JoScho @Insightsintobooks It's for the history books, that's for sure! 6y
Eyelit That is terrible and completely unacceptable. 😡 I hope your son cycles through pretty quickly. Take good care of both of you tonight and good luck with the phone calls tomorrow 6y
Redwritinghood I hope he is ok. 6y
WhatThePuck My daughter had 2 mimosas recently while out to eat. They put both regular OJ and mimosas in pitchers. When my refill wasn't regular OJ I said something about it and then she says she just thought it was the kind of OJ they bought and that's why it tasted funny. She's 12, with a fast metabolism and ate a lot for breakfast. She was a little giggly and our food was free with another free trip. Had she been 8 things would be different. 6y
tournevis @Eyelit @Redwritinghood He's sleeping soundly and we'll see how tomorrow fares. And I'll be making phone calls. @WhatThePuck Exactly, there is a big difference btw 8 and 12, if only in size, and my boy is quite small. 6y
CouronneDhiver Poor baby... 😕 I hope he‘s ok in the morning. 6y
Sungirl79 Oh no!!! I hope he is doing better!😢 6y
Wife I‘m sorry this happened to your son. How did you figure it out? Behavior changes after drinking? 6y
tournevis @Wife My husband drank a bit from the bottom, asked me to conform what he tasted, it's an unmistakable taste, then I started asking questions. 6y
tournevis @CouronneDhiver @Sungirl79 He's ok this morning. We'll keep him home just in case. 6y
Wife I kind of think this warrants a police report. Who knows how many times it has happened before and it may make the management more diligent in preventing future incidents. 6y
tournevis @Wife Sorry, had to do morning before writing the second half of my answer: shortly after we realized it, he started getting wobbly and slurring his words and making very stupid puns. A happy 8yo drunk. 6y
tournevis @Wife Maybe food inspector rather, but yeah. I'll see how the phone call turns out when I call at ten. Waiting for the breakfast rush to pass so I cak get the owner's full attention. 6y
Wife Let us know how it goes. Good luck. 🌹 6y
tournevis @Wife Will do! 6y
larah17 That‘s pretty horrific.. thank god he‘s okay! 6y
tournevis @larah17 Yes and yes! 6y
writerlibrarian It's good he's okay. What a nightmare... hugs to everyone 6y

This was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the prompt. Happy no one else used it! Responsible for the saying "angry young men" . #septembowie #lookbackinanger

Cinfhen Cool! Never knew that! #liveandlearn 7y
batsy Interesting! I used Lucky Jim for a prompt recently and learned that it was one of the novels of the "angry young men" era. Though Amis distanced himself from the label. 7y
