The Seasons of My Mother
The Seasons of My Mother: A Memoir of Love, Family, and Flowers | Marcia Gay Harden
11 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 10 to read
In this poetic and inspiring memoir, one of Americas most revered actresses uses the imagery of flowers and the art of Ikebana to depict the unique creative bond that she has had with her mother throughout the yearsand how, together, they are facing her mothers struggle with Alzheimers disease. Marcia Gay Harden knew at a young age that her life would be anything but ordinary. One of five lively children born to two Texas nativesBeverly, a proper Dallas lady, and Thad, a young officer in the US Navy hailing from El Pasoshe always had a knack for storytelling, role-playing, and mischief-making. As a military family, the Hardens moved often, and their travels abroad eventually took them to a home off the coast of Japan. It was here that Beverly, amidst the many challenges of raising a gaggle of youngsters, found solace in Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Using the imagery of flowers and Ikebana as her starting point, Marcia Gay Harden takes us through the different seasons of her mothers life, all the while weaving in the story of her own journey from precocious young girl to budding artist to Academy Award-winning actress. With a razor-sharp wit, as well as the kind of emotional honesty that has made her performances resonate with audiences worldwide, Marcia describes the familys travels overseas, her flourishing career in New York and Hollywood, and, most poignantly, Beverlys struggles today to maintain her identity as she tackles her greatest challenge yet: Alzheimers disease. Featuring photographs of gorgeous Ikebana arrangements created specially for this book, this memoir illustrates the uniqueness, beauty, and unforgettable love of motherhood, as Marcia does what Beverly can no longer do: she remembers. Like a cross between Mary Karrs The Liars Club and Lisa Genovas Still Alice, this memoir is a lyrical, loving homage to one mothers strength as reflected in the tenacity and artistry of her daughter.

@aroc surprised me with this thoughtful bookish gift of a Book Beau yesterday! Little did she know I have been coveting one for ages! And I so love the birds. Growing up, we always marked the end of winter by the swallows returning to the barn so they make me think of springtime and of freedom, hence my tattoo. 🥰

aroc You're welcome! I'm really glad you wanted one! 💛 I have been wanting to get you one but didn't like any of the patterns. Then I saw this one and said YES! Some book love for my book friend! 9mo
Fridameetslucy Your bird tattoos are swallows? I draw birds 8mo
whatsthEStorey @Fridameetslucy very cool! Yes, they are! Swallows are my favorite. I love birds on everything. 8mo
Fridameetslucy @whatsthEStorey look on Instagram for my same name - there are some drawings and also porcelain swallow bird sculptures on my studio bench waiting to dry and get fired. 8mo

My work team, Memories Matter, at the annual Walk to #EndAlz last month. Working with Alzheimer's Disease every day has taught me to be grateful for every #memory, big or small, that I am fortunate enough to keep. I am also grateful to be able to play my own small part in the fight. May we soon find a treatment for this disease.

This was not quite the memoir I had expected but it was a lovely portrait of a mother and her daughter. Making the fact that her mother has Alzheimer's even more painful. Not wanting her mothers life to be forgotten as she slowly slips away,Harden has written it all down.A loving tribute! This will definitely strike a chord with anyone who has watched this happen to a loved one. This was honest and heartfelt.🌟🌟🌟/5 . . . .

Tonight at the National Alzheimer's Dinner Marcia Gay Harden spoke about her mother and her courage to fight this horrible disease. Thank you Marcia for the amazing words of encouragement to all of us "pissed off women" fighting this disease. #endalz

I am here is DC to advocate for my 104 patients that are currently participating in the clinical drug trials being conducted by our team at Advanced Memory Research Institute of NJ. I fight for them.

Crazeedi My sister suffered w/AZ. I'm definitely going to read. It's a horrible disease, my sister was beautiful and young😢😡 1y
whatsthEStorey @Crazeedi I'm sorry to hear that. I work in clinical research on Alz trials. It's a merciless disease, taking so much from the sufferers and their families. Marcia Gay Harden's speech was amazing, as was the entire forum, heartbreaking but hopeful, too! 1y
Crazeedi @whatsthEStorey I hope the research is successful. Nothing stopped her decline, she had her smile till the end 😢 I pray for a cure 1y
