Eleven-year-old Gilly has been stuck in more foster families than she can remember, and she's disliked them all. She has a county-wide reputation for being brash, brilliant, and completely unmanageable. So when she's sent to live with the Trotters -- by far the strangest family yet -- Gilly decides to put her sharp mind to work. Before long she's devised an elaborate scheme to get her real mother to come rescue her. But the rescue doesn't work out, and the great Gilly Hopkins is left thinking that maybe life with the Trotters wasn't so bad ...

I adore The Bad Seed series and this one is Halloween themed. Mr. Seed is freaking out because he can‘t find the right costume so he tries to postpone trick or treating for a day. Pumpkin seed convinces him to relax & enjoy the holiday. Jace loves this series. 4⭐️

Also using this for the book scavenger hunt for purple.

4 ⭐ Halloween is about having fun and the spirit of the season. It is not about the perfect costume. But try telling that to Sunflower seed. They is in a rotten mood. Their friends are not doing a group costume and he is afraid his costume will be lame. With a help of a friendly pumpkin seed, they will find their season spirit and not miss out on all the Halloween fun.

My readalouds last week in the library were a lot of fun. My students love The Bad Seed and The Good Egg so I was happy to pull this new one off the Bookfair. #scarathlon2021 #teamhendrix

I read this middle grade book featuring a protagonist who is in foster care from 1978 (and by the author of Bridge to Terabithia) but I'm afraid it really hasn't aged well. Gilly is racist, fatphobic, and uses the "r" word to refer to her foster brother. The racism includes writing a poem for her Black female teacher that implies the "n" word - I was all ?

ReadingEnvy The one thing that is probably accurate is that adults in the lives of kids who move from place to place definitely need someone on their side. 3y

Author: Katherine Paterson
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Awards: Newberry
Gilly Hopkins is a feisty spunky 11-year old who has earned the title “meanest girl in town”. After Constantly hopping from foster home to foster home Gilly is ready to find her birth mother once and for all. This is a book I would not be able to resist doing as a Read aloud (RA) and with a PG movie adaptation, I think the entire class would love to go on a journey with the

LauraLeighn Great Gilly Hopkins. Using the movie would be a great way to get in UDL principle 1.2 (Offer alternatives for auditory information ). As we read through the book students can use ESOL strategy 42 (Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information) and keep a timeline of the adventures and trouble Gilly gets into. Cpalms actually has an entire resource page for this book, full of lessons, activities, and 4y
AshleyH I have never heard of this book but I want to look into it now! Showing the movie to students aligns perfectly with UDL principle 1.2. Since all students learn in a different way it‘s good to incorporate different teaching styles. Great post! 4y
DrSpalding This is a great read! I like your idea of comparing the book with the movie. Remember that you would have to get parental consent prior to showing anything beyond a rating of G. Using Florida‘s resource, Cpalms is a wise choice. 4y

An enticing RF, Newbery Award winning story about life in foster care and what it‘s like in the mind of a young, feisty girl determined to get what she wants. LC is my chosen teaching strategy because I want students to discuss the choices Gilly makes. “Would you ever do that? Why or why not?” Here are some lessons you could have students do together in their LCs-

From the author who broke my heart with The Bridge to Terabithia, I should have known that I'd love this one, even though I started the thing really not liking Gilly at all. That's as Paterson wants it, of course, and then she makes you fall in love with the girl and her story. Very well done.

After watching the film adaptation with my parents last weekend, I knew I had to find the book. I was incredibly astounded by how accurately the movie adapted the plot. The story is endearing and hard-hitting, tackling themes that few children's novels would touch in 1978. But this is no surprise, as Paterson rose to fame early on as a writer who doesn't shy away from difficult themes. #audiobook #overdrive #childrensbooks
