In a land similar to South Africa, twin brothers are beset by powerful forces beyond their understanding or control in this thrilling blend of science fiction, horror, magic, and dark humorevocative of the works of Lauren Beukes, Ian McDonald, and Nnedi Okoraforfrom the author of The Prey of Gods. Two brothers. Seven vices. One demonic possession. Can this relationship survive? Auben Mutze has more vices than he can deal withsix to be exacteach branded down his arm for all the world to see. They mark him as a lesser twin in society, as inferior, but theres no way hell let that define him. Intelligent and outgoing, Aubens spirited antics make him popular among the other students at his underprivileged high school. So what if hes envious of his twin Kasim, whose single vice brand is a ticket to a better life, one that likely wont involve Auben. The twins strained relationship threatens to snap when Auben starts hearing voices that speak to his dangerous sideencouraging him to perform evil deeds that go beyond innocent mischief. Lechery, deceit, and vanity run rampant. And then there are the inexplicable blood cravings. . . . After a couple of days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, I‘m really enjoying some chilly outdoor reading.

I loved The Prey of Gods, but couldn't get into this one. It's a YA-ish fantasy set in a world where everyone has a twin, and twins have seven vices distributed among them, which are recorded on the skin and determine a person's opportunities. I think Drayden is saying something about ambiguities forced into fake binaries, and I think I'm sympathetic, but the setup just feels contrived and I mostly didn't understand her characters' motives.

Come-read-with-me That is an intense face on the cover! 3y
swynn @Come-read-with-me Yes, I love that cover! It's by Thea Harvey, who is terrific and you can see more of her work here: https://www.artstation.com/peixel 3y
Come-read-with-me @swynn Thanks! I‘ll check it out! 3y

My #BookSpin and#DoubleSpin reads for January. I don't know much about them except that I loved Nicky Drayden's first book The Prey of Gods, and the Bayron book was nominated for a Goodreads Choice award. Looking forward to both!

Thanks @TheAromaofBooks !

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y
rachelsbrittain I loved Drayden's Prey of the Gods, too, and Cinderella is Dead has been on my TBR. Hope they're both good reads! 3y

“Science Fiction in Several Styles”, with Nicky Drayden, Jen Julian, and Christopher Brown. Three very different books led to an interesting conversation about where science fiction is today, and where it might go.

To bail or not bail... I'm halfway through this book and I'm just not connecting with it. But I've invested so much time, but I don't feel like spending more of my precious free time not enjoying something. It's not the book, it's me. What should I do?

jfalkens If your not enjoying the book, I'd bail. There's too many good books to read to bother with books your not enjoying. 5y
LibrarianRyan You‘ve given it half. Put it aside. If it sticks with you you will want to finish it later. If it doesn‘t at least you tried. 5y
LoverofLit I agree with the above commenters. Life is too short and there's too many great books out there to connect with. If you feel the inkling to pick it back later, you can. 5y

Are you a fan of science fiction/fantasy/magical realism? Drayden is an author you may want to read. Temper is good & though not as good as Drayden‘s debut, The Prey of Gods, it is well worth a read. As in her debut, the premise is fascinating—twins share their vices/virtues between them—worldbuilding excellent & characters, primary & secondary, well developed & compelling. If I have a complaint it‘s that the pacing felt a little off. A good read.

Two more days in the month which should be just enough time to read one more book (or more...). So, up next a book I won in a Goodreads giveaway.

I won this book June 16th in a Goodreads giveaway—it finally arrived today. That it did at all is surely due to the staff at Goodreads who contacted the publisher, who is actually responsible for sending the books, more than once about getting the book to me (and, I suspect but can‘t say definitely, other winners). It was published last month but a free book is a free book and this is a great way to start the week! ❤️unexpected book mail!!!

Did not see the twist coming at the end of this book. I really enjoyed this story and how it digs into the underbelly of society. I'd be interested to see what Kasim was thinking through all this and if he has the same style of thinking while he's Icy Blue. #fantasy
