Robotswithpersonality
The Woman Next Door | Yewande Omotoso

Pickpick

No one is more surprised than me how much I ended up enjoying this reading experience. I phrase it that way because considering the book's trajectory and themes, I'm not sure 'enjoy' is the right word for the majority of the plot. 1)?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? These two women have in common having wasted too long in resentment and bitterness, becoming caustic as a result; having stayed in a certain role long past the time it served them; clinging to pride and design careers as a means of bringing control to a life that no longer feels in their control; having been shaped negatively by their parental figures; being deeply unsatisfied with how their attempts at motherhood have ended up. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? The contrast appears in what they are just now acknowledging caused so much heartache to themselves and others over the years, admissions coming primarily in each other's company (not clearing the air in a marriage vs not being willing to acknowledge the work required to uproot deep racism). 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Having said that, the contrast between Marion refusing to see and Hortensia being unable to exist without being affected by racism does not play as large a role in the text as I initially would have thought. The flashbacks to earlier regrets are almost equal, with perhaps more emphasis on Hortensia. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 The ending doesn't feel desolate but quiet, there are reconciliations with the understanding that much time (and some people) have passed. Maybe not all can be made right, maybe not all is forgiven, nor should it be. But maybe there can be peace, companionship. Great writing.
If you survived Our Souls at Night, I think you might like this.

Hortensia and Marion are neighbours in a Cape Town suburb. They have in common their age, both in their 80s, that they have achieved success in their careers, and that they are widows. But they disagree about everything.
An accident in which Hortensia breaks her leg and Marion‘s house is badly damaged brings changes in their relationship. I was hoping for more and felt a but underwhelmed 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I loved this page,I think I also "grunted my understanding" as Hortensia was telling the story, and I wonder how many other women did the same thing. To me there's not many things as powerful as telling someone"you can depend on me",it's even more powerful than "I love you",I can accept there might be waves or inconstancy in love, but if you tell someone they can depend on you, you'd better be there for them, for better or worse, otherwise it was a lie

Hortensia and Marion are next door neighbours in South Africa, both are successful woman, both widows; but one being black and another white they have constant disagreements rooted in racism.
The story has a good start but it fizzles out, the characters become less interesting as the story progresses. As a lawyer, I found the part about the Will unrealistic and kept distracting me. The writing is good and some descriptions remind me the great⬇️

nanuska_153 García Márquez, but overall it's a forgettable book. 2y

Pickpick

I usually love Meyer's books and since I caught up with all his old work, I eagerly anticipate every new one. This was just okay, however. I don't know, maybe I feel like it's all too easy for him now. The banter between the main characters, the referencing of actual South African events, the perfectly executed Cape way of speaking. I just had a hard time escaping into it, which is pretty much the whole point. I enjoyed the ending, at least! ⭐⭐⭐
