Same, Same But Different
Same, Same But Different | Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
11 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
Elliot lives in America, and Kailash lives in India. They are pen pals. By exchanging letters and pictures, they learn that they both love to climb trees, have pets, and go to school. Their worlds might look different, but they are actually similar. Same, same. But different! Through an inviting point-of-view and colorful, vivid illustrations, this story shows how two boys living oceans apart can be the best of friends.

Spending some much needed quality time with my niece and she said there no black children in book's... well auntie Kay got to work we sang nursery rhymes with the hand action's, we found a few adventure books all with coloured children in and she loved it, we also got a date to do it all next week. Mamma was very happy too.

This RF book is probably one of my favs so far! It‘s a winner of the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award and is a cute story about two boys who are pen pals, one in India and one in the United States. They tell each other everything about their life and their world and how they are sort of the same, but different! Great story and I think it would be cool to do pen pals with our students!

ReaganT This link provides resources on how to get our students started with a pen pal! https://www.weareteachers.com/virtual-pen-pals/ I think this book goes well with ESOL strategy 24- incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum. Having pen pals also uses UDL principle 5.1- use multiple media for communication 3y
MFlowers I really like the activity you paired with this book! 3y
StephanyNunez I really like the incorporation of culture in this book and the Esol strategy is perfect for the book. 3y
DrSpalding Your resource is fantastic! During a social studies unit you could actually have virtual penpals with another country! Through the use of Google translate, students can interact with children all over the world. Universal design principle 5.1 is just right. Excellent post. 3y

I thought this book was really cute. It follows Elliott and Kailash. Elliott lives in the US and Kailash lives in India and they become pen pals. They learn that their worlds are the same but also different. I would share this book with the little I teach. I think they would enjoy it!

This cute F, PB is perfect for teaching inclusion. This story follows two boys from 2 diff parts of the world that find out things aren‘t really that different. This book is perfect to have for ESOL students to connect to (ESOL #19). This website provides printable and ideas to help all students become more socially aware of diff cultures. (UDL 8.3) #ucflae3414sp20

Rachelleleduc Awards: many but specifically for illustration won the Ezra Jack Keats New illustrator award. 4y
Rachelleleduc Perfect for a GR or even Choral reading. 4y

Ok, I have some criticisms about this one, all rooted in the fact this is not an #OwnVoices book. It could have been co-authored (like Save Me A Seat) to much better impact.

LibrarianRyan I agree. 5y

GraceNeg TS: RA, LC, IR & PR. I will implement this book as a LC. This is a way to give the students an opportunity to make connections with peers. This link takes you to an amazing lesson plan with different activities. My favorite is the letter activity because it shows children to communicate through writing. https://discoverarchive.vanderbilt.edu/bitstream/handle/1803/7131/Artifact%20B.p... 6y

AshleyC Love it!! Children do have to be exposed and understand the difference we have but still how we can be alike in many ways! Thank you for your post :) 6y

Cruzdia1 This would be a great addition to any classroom library to celebrate the differences between people and how those differences make us unique! 6y
DrSpalding Interesting resource. Looks like a student at Vanderbilt University created a good lesson plan for your favorite book. 6y
