I read this before-at least 25 years ago-and while I did remember the main plot I did not recall all the details. I almost skipped it even though it‘s my #doublespin for October because I didn‘t think I wanted to read it again. Glad I went ahead anyway. It was excellent!

The Rapture of Canaan plumbs the depths of radical religion, the fragility of community, the mysterious ways of God, and the weaknesses of self-proclaimed arbiters of right and wrong. Reynolds has created a very captivating picture of a community dominated by a charismatic leader. Ninah‘s journey to discovery of what she herself will choose to believe is compelling reading.

Breaking free from a religion that simply holds you down. From the outside it seems like an easy thing to do, but if you are raised in a community like this, it can be very difficult to get out. This book I believe captures that struggle well.

I don't know how to feel about this book. It was very readable, some of the prose was beautiful, I cared about the protagonist, but it felt emotionally manipulative and some of it made no sense at all. You are such a secluded group of religious followers but you send your kids to public school? With a quick ridiculous explanation that they had to because they'd "gotten in trouble with the government" for not sending them before? ?‍♀️

This book was a little slow in the beginning, interesting, but slow. And then HOLY CANNOLI DID IT PICK UP. It's 1:30 am and I didn't anticipate finishing this tonight but...when the book calls....

This was one of my favourite books as a teenager and reading it again years later it does not disappoint. It is just as poignant, beautiful and thought provoking as I remember. Sheri Reynolds, thank you for this literary gift! #recommendsday

Found this little gem hiding in the back of a Little Free Library. Grabbed it for a friend to read.
I once spoke with a bookseller who told me that this one always ends up in the religion section at thrift stores & she always rescues the book from being there.

Annl I rescued this one also. Think I will give it a try! 8y

I'm re-reading an old fav of mine! This is a great story about a teenage girl who stands up to her community when she becomes pregnant. Ninah is a bold, brave heroine who is full of love... and perhaps a fair amount of naivety.

Melkyl This is on my TBR shelf. I will have to grab it soon. 8y
LDavisMunro @Melwilk let me know what you think. I haven't read it in so long, I hope it is as good as I remember!! 8y
