picki dont normally cry about books, but this one really affected me. it does touch on some serious topics, but in a way that makes it out to be what it actually is and not some big romanticized version. i definitely reccomended to anyone who is a fan of realistic fiction with relatable characters.

Just one of the belated birthday gifts my sister gave
me this weekend. The opening sentence and paragraph that followed struck my funny bone.
“I don‘t have cancer and both of my parents are still alive.”
The narrator goes on to disclaim vampirism, magical powers,a fight against dystopian government, as subjects of the book.
so-soI wanted to bail on this book several times because it was filled with so much fluff which I find often happens with an authors first book. I stayed with it because it is about mental illness and it makes me happy that there are many books on the subject nowadays. That definitely wasn‘t the case when I was growing up! But, the mental illness aspect of this book is so vague and the main character, Ray is so incredibly self involved. #mentalhealth

so-soThis was a fast read. There were certain things I didn't like. For example, how a girl they barely know comes over and convinces them to start drinking. I know they're teenagers, but do we have to encourage bad influences? But the book did handle grief and depression, and how people don't understand depression, fairly well. I did like the before and afters, leading you to figure out what happened to Jane.
Getting away from my usual fantasy/sci first for what will hopefully be a quick YA read. Raymond Green was a history buff without a story of his own. Simon Blackburn was his best friend who enjoyed tween vampire novels and milk. The two are usually ignored. Until Jane Doe moves to town and chooses them as her people. #yareads #youngadult #yafiction #catsoflitsy

pickRay lives in small town CT and is a bit of an outcast along with BFF Simon. Then Jane moves to town and everything changes as she becomes Ray‘s girlfriend. The story unfolds in two time lines as we learn about their developing relationship and Jane‘s depression. It‘s a thoughtful, sad story with good humor and realistic depictions of teens and mental illness. Solid debut.
