Can We All Be Feminists?
Can We All Be Feminists?: New Writing from Brit Bennett, Nicole Dennis-Benn, and 15 Others on Intersectionality, Identity, and the Way Forward for Feminism | June Eric-Udorie
17 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 52 to read
The intersectional feminist anthology we all need to read (Bustle), edited by a remarkable and inspiring nineteen-year-old activist who the BBC named one of 100 inspirational and influential women of 2016 Why is it difficult for so many women to fully identify with the word feminist? How do our personal histories and identities affect our relationship to feminism? Why is intersectionality so important? Can a feminist movement that doesn't take other identities like race, religion, or socioeconomic class into account even be considered feminism? How can we make feminism more inclusive? In Can We All Be Feminists?, seventeen established and emerging writers from diverse backgrounds wrestle with these questions, exploring what feminism means to them in the context of their other identitiesfrom a hijab-wearing Muslim to a disability rights activist to a body-positive performance artist to a transgender journalist. Edited by the brilliant, galvanizing, and dazzlingly precocious nineteen-year-old feminist activist and writer June Eric-Udorie, this impassioned, thought-provoking collection showcases the marginalized women whose voices are so often drowned out and offers a vision for a new, comprehensive feminism that is truly for all. Including essays by: Soofiya Andry, Gabrielle Bellot, Caitlin Cruz, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Brit Bennett, Evette Dionne, Aisha Gani, Afua Hirsch, Juliet Jacques, Wei Ming Kam, Mariya Karimjee, Eishar Kaur, Emer OToole, Frances Ryan, Zo Samudzi, Charlotte Shane, and Selina Thompson

Gorgeous day to finish this book on intersectional feminism. As the US election approaches and I continue to think about the world I want to create, I find it more important to listen to BIPOC, Latinx, queer, disabled, and immigrant voices. This book includes essays by people who are at the intersection of many of these issues in the US and UK. #reread 5⭐️ @FeministBookClub

Day 2 with dad home has been tiring and rewarding! 💙💙

This book examines feminism through the lens of color, LGBTQ status, religion & other perspectives not often included in pop culture feminism. The authors ask how feminism can be more inclusive of disabled, fat, or immigrant women, etc.

I admit I hadn‘t given enough thought to many of the issues & specific situations the authors shared. For me, I don‘t want blinders on. I want to be aware of the needs of ppl different than me. Learned a lot 4.5⭐️

In other news, I ditched all the books I was partway through and started three new ones! The tagged is from @FeministBookClub plus I‘m rereading The Last Time I Lied (that‘s in my new StoryTimeSleeve), and I‘ll tag my Kindle read in the comments.

I‘m still working on getting my strength back. It‘s a slow process, as you chronically ill people know. 😐

Cinfhen Thinking about you!!! Hope you‘re feeling better ♥️ 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen if my health and I were in a relationship on Facebook, it would be labeled “it‘s complicated”. 😂😬 I‘ll try to drop you a line soon to catch up. It‘s not terrible, but I‘m not good either. So goes the rollercoaster! 🎢 5y

Cinfhen Ugh, thinking of you....I just picked up a good mindless audio on scribd / maybe you‘ll like it.... 5y
britt_brooke Love that sleeve! 5y
Cinfhen Hey, thinking about you 🧡 5y
Megabooks @britt_brooke thanks! Jena always does a great job! 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks, I just needed a break. I follow way too many people here and it just gets overwhelming keeping up every once and awhile. Plus I‘ve only finished one book this whole week!! I‘m sleeping so much!! How are you? 😘😘 thanks for thinking about me!! 🥰🥰 5y
britt_brooke @Megabooks For sure! And she has a good eye for fun fabric. 💚 5y
Cinfhen I worry about you xx same old here, but a bunch of businesses are reopening this week....I‘m debating if I should attempt a little beauty rejuvenation ?!?!!? 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen ooo...that sounds nice! Still trying to flatten the curve here in KY, although it doesn‘t seem the US is in agreement over the right course of action. 🤦🏻‍♀️ plus we‘ve got all kinds of people still going to church in KY and spreading it and the former governor is fanning those flames trying to sink the current governor who beat him. In other news, I just ordered a bunch of in-home waxing supplies bc I think it‘s going to be awhile 5y
Cinfhen Yup, that‘s on my list of places to visit😉but there are tons of new restrictions: you need to wear a mask and only 4 patrons allowed at a time in salon....i may not get an appointment until June😛 5y

Too cold, rainy, & windy to have lunch outside today. Excited to read the next essay in this collection. I really enjoyed Brit Bennett‘s novel The Mothers and found it well written, so I‘m expecting this to be equally as well written.

Having lunch with my book in a park is quickly becoming my favorite part of my day. I‘m loving the essays in this one too. Food for my belly alongside food for my mind.

Another day, another lunch at a lovely park. I‘m loving that my job (and the weather, finally) allows me to explore the different parks of Omaha. There‘s enough parks around town that I‘m usually able to find one to stop at in between clinics for lunch. 🤓☀️

Hopefully today‘s lunch isn‘t as chilly as it was earlier this week. At least the sun is shining and I remembered a jacket.

MrBook Where are you located? 6y
Amandajoy @MrBook I‘m in Omaha. This is a little trail area between two of the clinics I see patients in. 6y
MrBook Nice! I enjoyed Omaha. Spent a week in Council Bluffs and visited Omaha most of that time. 6y

Well, I only made it 15 minutes because I couldn‘t handle the chilly breeze. Finishing up lunch in the car. And spilled cherry juice on my book. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Megabooks Is the book good? 6y
Amandajoy @Megabooks so far it is, but I‘m only one essay in. There‘s a lot to think about, which is definitely a good thing! 6y

One of the best newer books on feminism I've read in the last year or two. Recommend 1000%. (Also, audio was great.) 🎧

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I absolutely adored this essay collection, it is a real breath of fresh intersectional feminist air 🙌🏻 I think it works so well as each essay looks at the author‘s first encounter with feminism not connecting with other parts of her or their identity, and I think is a collection that many will feel included by.
