The Wonder Weeks
The Wonder Weeks: How to Stimulate Your Baby's Mental Development and Help Him Turn His 10 Predictable, Great, Fussy Phases Into Magical Leaps Forward | Frans X. Plooij
7 posts | 3 reading | 2 to read
How to stimulate the most important developmental weeks in your baby's first 20 months and turn these 10 predictable, great, fussy phases into magical leaps forward. The worldwide bestseller and multiple award winning The Wonder Weeks describes the incredible mental developmental changes (leaps) and regression periods that all babies go through. Based on the scientific -- and parental -- world-changing discovery of a phenomenon: all healthy babies appear to be more fussy at very nearly the same ages, regression periods, and sleep less in these phases. These age-related fluctuations in need for body contact and attention (regression periods) are related to major and quite dramatic changes in the brains of the children. These changes enable a baby to enter a whole new perceptual world and, as a consequence, to learn many new skills. Understanding the real reason behind crying, eating, and sleeping problems is the only real solution every parent needs.

Haven‘t been around much bc my mental health has not been sun shining lol.

Also this kid is going through leap 9 and i‘m fairly sure it‘s going to kill us both. Sleep training last night left us both crying and with next to no sleep today. Thanks to my BFF and @Avanders for these books so at least I know why life sucks right now 😂

Roary47 Hang in there! 💛 2y

AmyG Sending a hug. It is not easy, been there. But, this too shall pass. It‘s just the getting through it that‘s awful. 2y
brittanyreads The Wonder Weeks was such a lifesaver for us! I know it's tough, but it does get better. 💛 I hope you get a restful night soon 2y
JenReadsAlot Sending good vibes and hugs your way. 2y
Magpiegem I‘ve been there… 3 times. I‘m still going through it with my 3rd. It‘s a bloody nightmare. But the wonder weeks at least gave me some sort of reasons. Sending strength and love. This too shall pass xxx 2y
Jas16 Sending lots of ❤️ 2y
BethM @AmyG @BrittanyReads @Magpiegem is it a sleep training issue or will it get better on its own? Please say it just stops 😂 2y
Magpiegem @BethM honestly all three of mine have been different. When people say they have found the sleep method that works what they mean is they have found the one that works for THAT BABY. So try not to let in too much helpful “advice” from mums who lucked out on babies who just like sleep (their time will come later with nightmare teenagers - that‘s what I tell myself anyway!! 😂) My middle one was so much easier even though I‘ve done the same 3 times! 2y

Avanders Ooph sleep regressions and leaps are tough! Hang in there - it‘ll pass! ♥️♥️ I found, with all the sleep regressions, if I was just mostly consistent with what we “always do,” (allowing for extra hugs and extra time with the baby for both baby and mama peace of mind), it usually passed in about a week.. usually 2 at the longest. I think consistency is important! But you got this mama — trust your gut! ♥️♥️ 2y
brittanyreads I can agree with @Avanders Our rough patches usually lasted 2 weeks tops, just try to stick with the plan as best you can and take LOTS of deep breaths. You're doing a great job, don't forget that. 💕 And you've got a Litsy parent clan behind you 🤗 2y
AmyG Does he walk yet? Before a great “growth” spurt…they regress. It will pass. Everything passes eventually. 2y
BethM @Avanders @BrittanyReads thanks! I‘ll be rereading this at 2am lol. @AmyG he‘s been walking since September. 2y

Thank you so much @Avanders ! I don‘t have this and had just put it on my registry!

Avanders Yay!! 👏🏽👏🏽 I also found I‘d very *readable* which was nice in the distracted times between awake baby. 😁 And I never got notice of this post - weird! 🧐 4y
BethM @Avanders readable is key! As an aside did you have a #CBBC book to forward this month or did the chain get jammed up? 4y
Avanders No... I don‘t have any #cbbc book.. must have gotten jammed up ☺️ 4y

These studies clearly demonstrated that human babies, too, go through difficult, age-linked regression phases in a similar way. With each difficult phase, babies make a leap in their mental development. Each time, a sudden, drastic, age-linked brain change enables babies to enter a new perceptual world. Thereby they discover more complex aspects both within and outside their own body, and master new, more complex skills.

The results of the data analysis also supported the idea that in the course of early ontogeny, a hierarchical organization emerges in the central nervous system that underlies the behavioral development of free-living chimpanzee babies and infants. We went on to observe and film human mothers and their infants in their home environment in the Netherlands.

Out of this analysis emerged the notion of what we now know as "developmental leaps." The data showed clear phases of "regression" in independence --difficult phases when the baby clings more closely to the mother, when they want to be nursed more often, and let out "whimpering sounds" more frequently than before.

Check...check...and check

• Not a single baby escapes, the book says, and mine is no exception. Here's a tentative forecast chart that means more to me than the actual weather forecast ☀️⛅️⛈🌪Parenting is hard, y'all, don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. Good night, friends •

Making my way through the book as the baby grows. He will be three months old this week and well into the third leap. This is absolutely marvelous the second time around. With my daughter I was too busy to pay this close attention. I‘m also using the app to help track and keep notes.
