Trans Mission
Trans Mission: My Quest to a Beard | Alex Bertie
7 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
I guess we should start at the beginning. I was born on 2 November 1995. The doctors in the hospital took one look at my genitals and slapped an F on my birth certificate. 'F' for female, not fail - though that would actually have been kind of appropriate given present circumstances. When I was 15, I realised I was a transgender man. That makes it sound like I suddenly had some kind of lightbulb moment. In reality, coming to grips with my identity has taken a long time. Over the last six years, I've come out to my family and friends, changed my name, battled the healthcare system, started taking male hormones and have had surgery on my chest. My quest to a beard is almost complete. This is my story.

I loved every minute of this book. I like how he talks about his “transiness.” He‘s honest about everything from coming out to surgeries. I loved the detail he gave on his relationships with his parents and how they‘ve evolved. That‘s one of those things teenagers can have a hard time seeing.

GingerAntics Parents can have a hard time with the teen years when they‘re not ready to let their relationships with their children grow and mature. I couldn‘t help laughing when he called his dad a “cheeky bugger.” I love that he‘s an introvert, but has found ways to be more social that work for him and make him feel good. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics As an introvert myself, I would ABSOLUTELY take another book on that (please and thank you, Alex)! It seems weird to say this book was a joy to listen to, because it was very logically heavy in places where it needed to be, but the tone is so relaxed and conversational that I couldn‘t help enjoying even those heavy parts. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics This book was fascinating and heartwarming, especially the later chapter written by his mom. This could be a great book for all teens to read, but especially the questioning and trans kids out there. This book makes Texas‘s law making gender affirming care for minors child abuse even more stunningly ignorant and harmful. Highly recommend! #AlexBertie #TransMission #PrideMonth #LGBTQ 3y

GingerAntics @kspenmoll love this book. I wish I had a ton more space to sing it‘s praises. Alex seems like such a beautiful soul. 3y

This is my next Pride Month read. I work with the target age group, and I‘ve even worked with one transgender teenager, so I‘m always looking for ways to be the best adult I can be for them.
Totally LOVE this cover by the way. I‘ve also seen a more recent picture of Alex than this, and he does in fact have a beard now.

A great resource book for anyone who loves a trans or questioning person and wants to learn more. Alex is very honest and forthcoming with touchy subjects. Definitely recommend.

Wonderful book! I loved hearing Alex's story and I appreciate how blunt and open he was about his transition. The last part written by his mom was very touching and I'll admit, made me tear up a little. 💜

This is a short read and is written for YA, but great for adult readers too.

Got this from the library today and already halfway through - it‘s a succinct story of his young life as a trans man. (Though he‘s British and his casual references to education keep throwing me.)

I don‘t normally post a lot of NF in. Cover love, but I love this cover and am looking forward to listening to this book.
