A stunning novel of conviction, friendship, and betrayal from Monica Hesse, the Edgar Award-winning and bestselling author of Girl in the Blue Coat It's 1944, and World War II is raging across Europe and the Pacific. The war seemed far away from Margot in Iowa and Haruko in Colorado--until they were uprooted to dusty Texas, all because of the places their parents once called home: Germany and Japan. Haruko and Margot meet at the high school in Crystal City, a "family internment camp" for those accused of colluding with the enemy. The teens discover that they are polar opposites in so many ways, except for one that seems to override all the others: the camp is changing them, day by day and piece by piece. Haruko finds herself consumed by fear for her soldier brother and distrust of her father, who she knows is keeping something from her. And Margot is doing everything she can to keep her family whole as her mother's health deteriorates and her rational, patriotic father becomes a man who distrusts America and fraternizes with Nazis. With everything around them falling apart, Margot and Haruko find solace in their growing, secret friendship. But in a prison the government has deemed full of spies, can they trust anyone--even each other?

Wow, what a shocking story. This historical fiction tells the story of an internment camp in crystal city TX. Before I read this book I never knew this internment camp.existed or that Germans were also imprisoned. This was a deep story that uses Fiction to discuss a history that often gets overlooked. I love Monica Hesse she looks at events that happened during WW2 that often don't get attention.

Texreader Crystal City is not far from where I live, about a two hour drive. There‘s another book about the camp but I think it‘s nonfiction. I got it for my husband some years ago because it‘s a topic of interest to him (and me). I‘ll have to check this one out for him. 3y

Loved hearing the author talk about the amount of research she did for this book, and considering it is inspired by real life events here in Texas, I couldn‘t resist. Our Houston YA for Adults Book Club pick for August.

I wanted to love this book but it just didn‘t work for me. It feels very incomplete. It had potential but there wasn‘t enough of a story and there wasn‘t that much depth to the characters. A good attempt, but mediocre delivery.

Was going to rate this a 3 star until I got to the ending and it left me speechless. Did not see the ending coming and it made so much sense to me. I like this story because it was something different then what I have ever read about. It was about a Japanese American and German American girl whose family are sent to an internment Camp during WW2. It deals a lot with racism, friendship, family, etc.

The moment I heard about this historical fiction teen book I knew I needed to read it. I didn't know about American internment camps during WW2 - why didn't I learn this in school? The war would have been more applicable to me as a student if I knew families, yes wives and children, of supposed intel were "invited" to join their male family members in confinement. I can't explain this better than the author did in her end notes in this book.???

Lovesbooks87 I was shocked that I had never heard about this in school either. I feel we need to learn about these times so we can hopefully not let them happen again. I hadn't heard about the the events that happened in the book Between Shades of Gray. I hate that we have times like this in our world history! 5y
MaggieCarr Yes! Yes! Yes! Glad I am not alone in my lack of WW2 knowledge. I read Rita Sepety's other book called Salt to the Sea (I enjoyed it) but I didn't have Between Shades of Gray on my radar. Thank you for the recommendation, I added it to my TBR list. :) 5y

This YA book was about another dark time in our history that I am sad to say I didn't really know too much about. I had heard about internment camps, but I didn't know too much about them. It is sad that people when made to leave their homes and basically become prisoners for small things or people just accusing them of saying or doing something that they may not have done. Most of the people that were sent to camps were citizens of our country.

kstadt929 I love books like this even though they can be heart wrenching! I‘ve heard about this book and definitely need to read it! 5y
Chrissyreadit This sounds like a great book to read for our WW2 studies. 5y
Lovesbooks87 @Chrissyreadit yes it would be. She also has another book that I believe is WW2 too. I haven't read it yet. It is called 5y

When one of my students was a freshman, we read & discussed The Girl in the Blue Coat by this same author. Now we are reading the tagged book. Based on a real internment camp called Crystal City in Texas, two adolescent girls, one German, the other, Japanese, meet & develop a secret friendship. I am only 93 pages in but loving it. The historical novel is narrated in the voices of the two girls from their different perspectives.

Ya about an internment camp in the US during World War Two. I learned a few things I didn‘t know about what the US did. And I liked the main characters.

I started this book recently and am loving it!
I had to take a break yesterday for a short trip to North Carolina to ride The Polar Express in Bryson City (one of my favorite children's books brought to life!! I was just as excited as the kids on the train!!) but should finish in the next day or so.

Internment camp for Germans and Japanese in 1944. I've never read a book about the camps so it was very interesting. Haruko and Margot are the main characters from opposing sides.

A moving YA based on real life location. During World War 2, a Japanese American teen and her classmate of German descent is sent to an internment camp. Together they form a friendship and a bond that weathers the storm of American politics and attitudes of the time.

I absolutely loved this #YAbook!!! It sheds light on a dark part of American history in an honest and engaging way- my only complaint is that the book actually ended... I sincerely didn‘t want it to! I‘ve read other books by Hesse but this is my favorite by far!! #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

“I don‘t want you ever to forget where you are. You are a prisoner here. I don‘t care if you have a new friend, or if there‘s a school newspaper, or if there are books in the library...at the end of the day you‘re a prisoner in the only way that matters. If our family wanted to leave they wouldn‘t let you.”

I don‘t read a lot of historical fiction—but if all HF was like this, it‘d be my most read genre.

I just read some amazing reviews and immediately put in an ARC request because it sounds so powerful.
I was seriously 22 years old before I learned about the history of internment camps here in the U.S. It was never discussed in school at all and I was shocked to learn about it. An important piece of our history and this seems like an excellent middle grade read!

I‘m really enjoying Monica Hesse‘s new book, The War Outside and I loved Girl In The Blue Coat by her. Little did I know- she also wrote American Fire- an adult nonfiction book that I absolutely loved.
