Girl in the Blue Coat
Girl in the Blue Coat | Monica Hesse
An unforgettable story of bravery, grief, and love in impossible times"Girl in the Blue Coat is a powerful, compelling coming-of-age story set against the dark and dangerous backdrop of World War II. It's an important and page-turning look at the choices all of us--including young adults--have to make in wartime. A beautiful combination of heartbreak, loss, young love, and hope." -Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale"A tapestry of guilt and acceptance, growing responsibility, and reluctant heroism, Hanneke's coming-of-age under heartbreaking circumstances is a jarring reminder of how war consumes and transforms the passions of ordinary life. Every devastating moment of this beautiful novel is both poignant and powerful, and every word feels true." -Elizabeth Wein, New York Times bestselling author of Code Name VerityAmsterdam, 1943. Hanneke spends her days procuring and delivering sought-after black market goods to paying customers, her nights hiding the true nature of her work from her concerned parents, and every waking moment mourning her boyfriend, who was killed on the Dutch front lines when the Germans invaded. She likes to think of her illegal work as a small act of rebellion. On a routine delivery, a client asks Hanneke for help. Expecting to hear that Mrs. Janssen wants meat or kerosene, Hanneke is shocked by the older woman's frantic plea to find a person--a Jewish teenager Mrs. Janssen had been hiding, who has vanished without a trace from a secret room. Hanneke initially wants nothing to do with such dangerous work, but is ultimately drawn into a web of mysteries and stunning revelations that lead her into the heart of the resistance, open her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi war machine, and compel her to take desperate action.Beautifully written, intricately plotted, and meticulously researched, Girl in the Blue Coat is an extraordinary, gripping novel from a bright new voice.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this! I honestly haven't read many books set during World War II outside of Germany, Russia, France and the United States so this was a nice fresh perspective. I loved the mystery of this with the missing girl and I have to commend the author for not taking the easy way out in this ending. I loved the main character and her interactions with the resistance.

Wow! Just Wow! It‘s been a while since a read a book that was from the perspective of just one character, and it did not disappoint! Following Hanneke‘s story was just amazing! Everything made for a beautiful historical fiction, the love, the loss, the terrible war and the strength of those having to live through it. Absolutely loved this book!

100% would recommend. The story takes place during WW2 and takes you through the journey of young adults. It encompasses mystery, love, friendship, heartache and life. It isn‘t AS predictable of an ending as one would think while reading. Easy to read book, will finish quickly.

vkois88 How was The Summer I Turned Pretty? I'm so hit or miss with Han's books. I have the #UnpopularOpinion of not really caring for the To All The Boys series. Though I did enjoy the movie. Lara Jean was just... insufferable, at times. That's the only way I can think of to describe her. 11mo
Eggs I liked the Pretty trilogy. The 3rd one made the other two more meaningful. Same with the Boys I've Loved trilogy. But I can see that insufferable thing in the movie 😂 11mo

It's told through the eyes of Hanneke Bakker, an eighteen year old whose boyfriend was killed fighting during the German invasion. She is involved in finding and selling black market goods to the wealthier people in town but then becomes involved in searching for a missing girl. This causes her to cross paths with a group of young people involved in the resistance and she sees for herself what is happening in her own town.I cried several times it.

This book is about a brace girl named Hanneke who lives in Amsterdam during WW2. She works on the black market taking different items to people. But when one of her customers asks her to find a Jewish girl that she was hiding in her house and that has now disappeared. All Hanneke knows about the girl is she was wearing a blue coat. As she unravels the mystery she covers more than the truth. I can't imagine living in this time.

Finished this one for #BackPackEurope and the #GenreSwapPBC and absolutely loved it. It was such a beautiful story touching on the entire spectrum of emotions, showing the human side of the Holocaust in ways I hadn't previously considered.

The above pictured Hollandsche Schouwburg theatre (now a museum) was a heavily featured location in the book, one I'd be honored to visit one day in person.

This is an interesting look at the resistance movement in Amsterdam during WWII. This is the book in round 2 in #LMPBC. Since I am not experienced in annotating my books, I‘m really not sure what to do now. Do I emphasize what #iheartYA has already marked? Or do I look for new things to mark? #qustionsquestions #historical fiction #reindeerreads

cathysaid In my book, I marked things I thought were interesting or confusing, different themes I noticed, things that made me laugh or cringe, areas that annoyed me, and passages I thought were beautifully written. I also asked a few questions of you all as I went. At the end of some chapters I summed up my thoughts. I'm just looking forward to all of your observations, whatever form they take! Hope this helps? 2y
cathysaid Also, it helped me to imagine we were all in the same room with yummy food and wine, talking about the books in our book club meeting! 2y

ItsAngel @Mdargusch I don‘t think there are any rules to this. In my book I marked whatever really stood out...much the way @cathysaid explained in her response. Now that I have your book, @Mdargusch , I am underlining new things, emphasizing things that you‘ve already noticed and writing my own bits. I‘m just doing whatever I feel lead to do. 2y

My last dip into Nazi Germany and it was pretty good for what it was. Had some interesting twists and turns and was a good mystery to solve, though I did it slower than the average person considering I'm sick while I read pretty much more than half in one day oops. But it wasn't a letdown, and I adored the writing style also.

America._.Charlie Love this book and that cover! Have you read other history type books like this one? Also what was your favorite part? 3y
LadyZircon @America._.Charlie I would have to say the only other book I've read like this is Lilac Girls which is just fantastic! But other than that, I honestly found this by surprise and I had to read it for my minor book slump for this particular place in history. Oh man, my favorite part???? Hmm, that's a tough one...I'll have to get back to you XD what was yours?? 3y
America._.Charlie I think my favorite part was the nursery one because I never knew about that taking place in world war 2. I never knew the little kids stayed in a nursery and people took care of them while this whole war thing was going on. What is Lilac Girls about? I never heard of that book. 3y
See All 11 Comments
LadyZircon @America._.Charlie oooh yes that was a highlight for me as well, but I'm not much of a history person so unfortunately this was all an eye opener for me >.< Lilac Girls is about the women who suffered under the hands of German doctors who experimented on them, giving the girls the name of the Rabbits, but I'm not doing it justice. It deals with real people in the novel also, which I didn't know. 3y
America._.Charlie Probably gonna go out and get that book now because it sounds good. Will you read more history books? 3y
LadyZircon @America._.Charlie I'm not sure, it definitely depends on what the subject matter is but if it intrigues me enough I'm sure I'm bound to try some :) and I hope you like the other one!! It left me speechless really with how powerful it all was. 3y
LadyZircon @America._.Charlie have you read any other history books you'd recommend?? 3y
America._.Charlie The Girls of Atomic City. It's about these 3 women who lived and were apart of the building of the atomic bomb in oak ridge, tn. There are also pictures in there too! History books mainly tell about men during world war 2. But this book talks about the impact on the women and how women were apart of world war 2. This book is based on true stories. 3y
America._.Charlie Also I just read your bio. I can't wait to read your book when it gets published! Is it a romance novel? History? Fantasy? Thriller? 3y
LadyZircon @America._.Charlie ooh that sounds interesting, I'll have to pick it up soon most definitely!! It's not history no, I don't really know how to explain it cause it's still in it's infancy but I'll think on it and get back to you, but it's built around this character I've had and have been fleshing out over this past year, and I'm finally sitting down and trying to write a book for her. She deserves it. 3y

Hanneke is a black market war profiteer. She finds goods and sells them to others. One day she's asked to help find a person & she very reluctantly agrees. Throughout the story she finds herself in situations she doesn't want to be in-helping the resistance. The ending was unexpected. The overall story was good, the characters not so much. This is between a pick and a so-so for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A heartbteaking story about the race to find a missing girl. Except no one can report her missing, because the missing girl is Jewish and this is occupied Holland. A story about all the little decisions and "small betrayals" in the middle of a "big war". I cried several times throughout and would thoroughly recommend this book.
