Breaking the Slump
Breaking the Slump: Baseball in the Depression Era | Charles C. Alexander
5 posts
In the late twelfth century, Japanese people called the transitional period in which they were living the "age of warriors." Feudal clans fought civil wars, and warriors from the Kanto Plain rose up to restore the military regime of their shogun, Yoritomo. The whole of this intermediary period came to represent a gap between two stable societies: the ancient period, dominated by the imperial court in Heian (today's Kyoto), and the modern period, dominated by the Tokugawa bakufu based in Edo (today's Tokyo). In this remarkable portrait of a complex period in the evolution of Japan, Pierre F. Souyri uses a wide variety of sources -- ranging from legal and historical texts to artistic and literary examples -- to form a magisterial overview of medieval Japanese society. As much at home discussing the implications of the morality and mentality of The Tale of the Heike as he is describing local disputes among minor vassals or the economic implications of the pirate trade, Souyri brilliantly illustrates the interconnected nature of medieval Japanese culture. The Middle Ages was a decisive time in Japan's history because it confirmed the country's national identity. New forms of cultural expression, such as poetry, theater, garden design, the tea ceremony, flower arranging, and illustrated scrolls, conveyed a unique sensibility -- sometimes in opposition to the earlier Chinese models followed by the old nobility. The World Turned Upside Down provides an animated account of the religious, intellectual, and literary practices of medieval Japan in order to reveal the era's own notable cultural creativity and enormous economic potential.

(Not my picture) This week has been WAY less than productive for my reading. Getting back into routines, habits & schedules has proven to be more difficult than I expected 😢🙄. I hope I‘m not starting a book slump 🥺 ‘cause that‘s kind of the way it‘s been feeling like today & yesterday. Hopefully I can get back into gear & make some decent progress over the next couple of days. #MarchUnshelfing #Readathon #LitsyAtoZ 📚🎶🤞🏻🙏🏻

Clwojick Maybe try an audiobook if you feel yourself falling into a slump. Sometimes I‘ll download the audio version of a physical book I have and listen as I read along, or multitask while I get some cleaning done. That usually helps me. 4y
Andrew65 Auodiobook is always a good suggestion to push a slump away, or a favourite book or author. I usually try a quick and / or easy read. Any of these three can get me going again. @Clwojick @SquidgetsRoom 4y
DieAReader Thanks @Clwojick @Andrew65 I‘ll take a look to see what audiobooks I can find that are non-fiction. I‘ve never been able to get through a fiction audiobook yet lol. Any suggestions? 4y

Andrew65 @SquidgetsRoom Not really used audiobooks for Non Fiction, but these fiction books stick in my mind 👇 4y
DieAReader Wow! Thanks @Andrew65 I‘ll take a look! 4y
Andrew65 Also but it‘s a big one (edited) 4y
Andrew65 I find with audiobooks some work well, or even better, in audiobook formats and some don‘t work that well. So don‘t give up on them. Audiobooks help me increase my reading time by listening for the total of 250 miles weekly commute and when too tired to physically read. 4y
GHABI4ROSES I love that photo, WOW❣️ 4y
DieAReader @Andrew65 I find because of my ADHD it‘s hard to follow a storyline with anything that‘s not non-fiction lol 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄 4y
DieAReader Stole it from a fb group @GHABI4ROSES 😉🤣 4y
GHABI4ROSES Stealing again! And just remember that we do not HAVE TO read, we WANT TO read. WE GET TO READ. 4y
Andrew65 @GHABI4ROSES WE LOVE TO READ! @SquidgetsRoom (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @SquidgetsRoom Hopefully if you find the right book you‘ll be able to. Sometimes I follow the audiobook with an ebook or physical book, that makes it easier to follow. (edited) 4y
DieAReader We LIVE to READ! 🥰📚🎶 4y
Clwojick I second Daisy Jones! It was my favourite audiobook from 2019. Where the Crawdada Sing was great too. Big Little Lies, The Two Lives Of Lydia Bird and The Bookish Life of Nina Hill were also fantastic! 4y
DieAReader Thanks @Clwojick 🙂 4y

1) Introvert
2) Depends on the day - sometimes sleep, sometimes do more
3) Usually Audiobook
4) Cook
5) Cheesy reality tv shows are the BEST way to get your mind of a book slump. A few days of distraction are the best thing to refresh your brain and come back to books. #rupaulsdragrace
