#BookReport A disappointing week due to high level of work commitments.

Read a total of 1,264 pages and finished one book, Roots, although this was a book of 912 pages! And a favourite!

Next week may not be much better until after Friday anyway.

ljuliel That‘s pretty doggone good, considering you were so busy ! 3w
Crazeedi Disappointed??? You're a bit hard on yourself! You did great!! 3w
Andrew65 @ljuliel @Crazeedi I always am hard on myself! 😂 Just get frustrated when work gets in the way of reading. Only managed 3 hours 5 minutes today. 3w
See All 9 Comments
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I guess you work to read! 😉 that's one nice thing about retirement, I never had time to read like I wanted to 3w
Andrew65 @Crazeedi It does get in the way. Takes up time you want to read, then at the weekend when you have time to read makes you too tired to read. 💤 3w
TheAromaofBooks So annoying when work gets in the way of life!! 3w
Cinfhen Whoa!!!! I forgot how much of a #Chunkster Roots was!!!!! Great reading week 🙌🏻❤️ 3w
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Thanks, given everything else got in as much reading as I could. Roots was 30 hours of audiobook! 3w

What to say!!! Everyone should read this book! I have spent a week immersed in Kunta Kinte and his descendants‘ lives and at so many points it was heartbreaking. 😢 I both love this book, and hate it for the real experiences behind this book. We should all hold our heads in shame for allowing this depravity! We still haven‘t moved far enough, or fast enough, and need to fight racism with every fibre of our being! I intend to read his other books.

lele1432 I REALLY need to finally read this!! 💞 3w
Andrew65 @lele1432 The audio was awesome, read by Avery Brooks (Benjamin Sisko in Deep Space Nine if you remember that). He did such a great job but 30 hours of audio. 3w
Andrew65 Thanks @Ms_T for getting me to read this book. ❣️ 3w

This is definitely the book i thought of for today‘s #ancestors #screamathonphotochallenge prompt.

The scariest thing about this book is that it‘s true.

Dear Roots,

You've been in our family so long, passed from house to house and generation to generation, read and re-read for decades. I thought we could spend some time together, but your pages started to crumble as soon as I picked you up off the shelf.

That's okay. I'll just tuck you back on the shelf so you can take a well deserved nap.

Rest in Peace, my old friend.

Tonight was the opening night of our city‘s book sale. It‘s usually really good and I think it‘s good this time too but I was on a time crunch plus the people that come in at opening are cutthroat!

One of my exciting finds was one of this month‘s BOTM selections. I was going to choose it but skipped instead, and now I found it for a dollar. And that vintage Judy Blume box set! 🥰🥰🥰

LeahBergen I‘m one of those cutthroat people that line up. 😂😂😂 That Blume set is awesome! 7mo
batsy I loved that Pears book! 7mo

1) A book that sweeps across the years, the decades and the centuries. A book which gets your emotions churning, is a chore to put down and once finished, stays with you always. The tagged title did all those.
2) Nothing - I‘m a tidy freak and don‘t like clutter.
3) No, I get all my recipes online.
4) Edgar Allen Poe
5) Anyone who wants to join in!

Thanks for the tag, @birdsong28 😘

Alone in the nights, though, he was so lonely and depressed, spending hours staring up into the darkness, that he felt as if he were falling in upon himself. It was like a sickness spreading within him. He was amazed and ashamed to realize that he felt the need for love.

lynneamch It's been so long ago that I watched the groundbreaking series. Your stars remind me I should read the book. I'm fortunate to live near the farm where Haley lived the last 10 years of his life. It's now the home of the Children's Defense Fund and the Langston Hughes Library (non-circulating). The librarian leads a book discussion group which I love to attend when I can. 13mo

My library book sale #BookHaul. Not bad for $11... and I think, although it‘s a bit beat up, that that may, just may be, a first edition Roots. But I won‘t know for sure until I find someone who knows first editions way better than I do. (I know enough to look at the first pages, but I also know that that doesn‘t always mean what you think it does for people in collectible books).

readordierachel Wow, great haul! Alias Grace, Last Days of Night, and The New Jim Crow are all excellent. Though I think you've already read the latter? 1y

🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 This is the first slave narrative that I've read where a main character starts in Africa and is sent across to America so that was an interesting point of view for me. It's also the first one I've read that starts in the early 1700s so I liked that too. Mr. Haley put a lot of love into this story and it's such a lovely and heart breaking tribute to his family. This should definitely be read in HS if it isn't already. Wasn't in mine.

Has anyone read this? I watched the new version this weekend and was equally amazed and horrified (by how inhumane our recent past has been....the show was amazingly acted and well done). I'm tempted to pick up the book...

Thedrunkstrawberry @bumble31 I've started listening to it on audio and it's great. Still only in Africa. I love the detail of every day life the book goes into. It makes it that more tragic that this is a life Kunta isn't going to enjoy for long 3y
