A Lady in the Smoke: A Victorian Mystery | Karen Odden
14 posts | 10 read | 45 to read
Featuring all the suspense and historical atmosphere of Anne Perrys Victorian mysteries, Karen Oddens enthralling debut plunges a headstrong young Englishwoman into a conspiracy that reaches the highest corridors of power. Following a humiliating fourth Season in London, Lady Elizabeth Fraser is on her way back to her ancestral country estate when her train careens off the rails and bursts into flames. Though she is injured, she manages to drag herself and her unconscious mother out of the wreckage, and amid the chaos that ensues, a brilliant young railway surgeon saves her mothers life. Elizabeth feels an immediate connection with Paul Wilcoxthough society would never deem a medical man eligible for the daughter of an earl. After Paul reveals that the train wreck was no accident, and the inspector who tried to prevent it dies under mysterious circumstances, Elizabeth undertakes a dangerous investigation of her own that leads back to her familys buried secrets. Not only are her dowry and her reputation at stake; Pauls very life hangs in the balance when he is arrested for manslaughter. Now Elizabeth must risk everything for the man who has found a place in her heart. As the trial draws near, and Parliament prepares for a vote that will change the course of the nation, she uncovers a conspiracy that has been years in the making. But time is running out to see justice done. Praise for A Lady in the Smoke This riveting historical debut is chock-full of details about Victorian England, spun into a masterful tale of romance, railroads, and mystery. Propelled by an engaging heroine and a deftly plotted conspiracy, its a great read!Stefanie Pintoff, Edgar Awardwinning author of Hostage Taker

Historical romantic suspense, this was certainly entertaining and I flew through it. There were many interesting historical details about railroads and the medical profession in mid-19th cent England, and Elizabeth was a likeable protagonist. That being said, I didn't find her believable to the time period - it stretched plausibility to the point of taking me out of the story, and, as a result, I found the ending overly tidy and unsatisfactory.

I enjoyed this one! Maybe a bit slow in spots, but well-plotted and contained some interesting historical info on Victorian England's railway surgeons (they were news to me) and specific injuries sustained during crashes and how they were treated. Especially impressed as this was a debut novel. Would definitely read her again. #romantsy #osrbc

I like my mystery with a significant dose of history, and this has it. Victorian railways, 19th century medical practices, some interesting observations about women's financial rights. There's a romance that's essential to the plot but doesn't overwhelm it. Interesting characters. Well written. I really enjoyed this.

LectricSheep This sounds like it does some serious genre spanning! 👍 8y

#bookandbrew Living in the Czech Republic ruined American beer for me, so when I occasionally drink beer, it's usually imported. We don't actually drink out of this Pilsner Urquell mug, which was a gift. I may need some beer, though, to drown my sorrows today. #photoadaynov16

Given that I have a cold, it was fortuitous that we had planned pasta e fagiioli for tonight's dinner. I started this book this afternoon, but given that two of our alma maters (Penn State and Ohio State) are playing football this evening, there will be no more reading tonight😄 At least they aren't playing each other again.

Gleefulreader That looks delicious! 8y
Lynnsoprano @Gleefulreader It's the Olive Garden copycat recipe, and it is one of my favorites. 8y
Suzze As soon as your picture came up I said "pasta e fagioli!!" Oh, how I want some. Looks amazing. 8y
