The Between
The Between: Novel, A | Tananarive Due
12 posts | 11 read | 23 to read
When Hilton was just a boy, his grandmother sacrificed her life to save him from drowning. Thirty years later, he begins to suspect that he was never meant to survive that accident, and that dark forces are working to rectify that mistake. When Hilton's wife, the only elected African-American judge in Dade County, FL, begins to receive racist hate mail, he becomes obsessed with protecting his family. Soon, however, he begins to have horrible nightmares, more intense and disturbing than any he has ever experienced. Are the strange dreams trying to tell him something? His sense of reality begins to slip away as he battles both the psychotic threatening to destroy his family and the even more terrifying enemy stalking his sleep. Chilling and utterly convincing, The Between follows the struggles of a man desperately trying to hold on to the people and life he loves, but may have already lost. The compelling plot holds readers in suspense until the final, profound moment of resolution.

I enjoyed this- it felt like a very quick, urgent read. To me this is more “horrifying“ than “horror“, does that make sense to anyone but me? Haha
I didn't feel chills or get creeped out or scared as some horror books can do to me but the concept was certainly horrifying and intriguing.
I loved Sue's prologue and I look forward to reading more of her works.

Pretty dark and heavy, but there are some brilliant moments there! Due is such an amazing writer. I particularly liked the intro by her in this 2021 edition.

If you are a fan of horror, especially that focuses more on the psychological, and you haven't read this, you are missing out. This was an amazing book!

Reading this book felt like being inside someone's mind as they come undone and reach their breaking point. Are the supernatural aspects real? Or is he just losing his mind? You'll have to read to find out. 😉

The writing in this book is truly haunting and it left me on edge the whole time.

vivastory Sold!! 3y
Addison_Reads @vivastory I think you'll love this one. @Reggie turned me on to this author and I've really loved all 3 books I've read by her. 3y
vivastory I have The Good House, but for some reason have been intimidated by the size even though I know I'll love it 3y

An impressive first novel. When Hilton's family is targeted by a white supremacist, the lines between reality and nightmare, between life and death, begin to blur. A scary, haunting story. Less so for the supernatural elements than the psychological ones.

I read an interview with Due from last year where she said "White supremacist terror is more relevant in 2021 than it was when I published this in 1995.” And I wish that wasn't true.

readordierachel Thanks for sending this to me @Reggie 3y
Reggie I thought I was safe when at first the italics represented the dreams and then they all seemed to meld together and I couldn‘t tell what was what. I love this book. I‘m glad you liked it, Rachel. 3y
readordierachel @Reggie Yes, she really blended it all so well. I'll be thinking about this one for a while. 3y
Reggie Rachel, I got your package yesterday. Thank you so much and you are correct. I love the 2 authors and haven‘t read those books so it was perfect. Thanks so much! 😊 3y

Hilton James was just a little boy when his Nana jumped into the ocean saving him from the riptide, letting it take her instead. Decades later he is married with kids and his wife has just been elected the first Black District Judge in Florida. She starts getting these anonymous racist and threatening notes and then his nightmares start. This is psychological horror and even though the nightmares are in italics and what reality is supposed to 👇🏼

Reggie be is in normal font, you start to question everything that starts happening. And even though you might get confused, Due anchors you with the love Hilton has for his family. This was great and it just made me order another book from Due. This was her first book back in 1995 and it‘s totally worth a read. 3y
Twainy I‘ve heard of this author. I may have read something of hers. This sounds good. 3y
TrishB I‘ve read one by her, but definitely want to read more! 3y

Reggie @Twainy @TrishB yeah, she is rock solid with characterization and after the Good House I thought I‘d read another one by her. She didn‘t disappoint. 3y
TrishB They‘re really expensive here so I‘m going to have a look on a few second hand sites. 3y
Centique Heeeeeee‘s baaaaack! 😂😂Wonderful review Reggie 🙌🙌 3y
Twainy THAT‘S where I‘ve heard of her the good house! It‘s on my TBR, it‘s long. A weekend read. 😁 3y
Ruthiella This author had been on my list FOREVER ! Must read one soon! 3y
CoverToCoverGirl I was wondering where you were! 😁 3y
Reggie @Ruthiella She‘s so good. She‘s one of these horror writers that I wonder what a book without horror would look like from her. 3y
Reggie @CoverToCoverGirl work was crazy for a hot minute. 3y

a wonderful horror novel striking a balance between the terrors of racism-addled domestic terrorism and being haunted by unexplained supernatural phenomenon. the detailed descriptions of the protagonist's nightmares and his struggle to remain lucid and keep a grasp on his inconsistent reality are gripping and also unsettling. this is probably one of the better horror novels I've read in recent memory.

Hilton and his grandma 💕

I can't resist a good “ghost“ story. This was a spur of the moment pick at my library in 2010, and I've been a fan of Due's ever since.
