Our library celebrated Free Comic Book Day today. Everyone got to pick one. My pick was Doctor Who (obviously). My teen picked Lumberjanes, and the 4 year old wanted turtles. My husband grabbed Minecraft for the kids. They had some really good choices this year. Unfortunately, our local-ish comic book store closed about a year ago. It's a vape shop now. Every time I drive by it I feel a bit depressed.

LibrarianRyan Ugggg. I‘m jelly of lumber janes though. 6y
BooknerdsLife Oh I missed out on the Doctor Who one 😱😭😍😍💙 But got a Captain Marvel 🤗 So sorry your comic bookstore closed down. That is sad :( 6y

I can't find this volume on Litsy, but I give it a 👍🏻. Time has gone crazier than usual in this one. Plus there's a Doctor Who reference 😄

Didn't enjoy this quite as much as I have some of the other collections, but the series continues to tackle some important subjects without making them "big deals". If that makes sense. I'm very tired. ? Also the cover gives me life. That mysterious fox-like creature is adorable. Whatever it is. Did I not pay attention while reading? Was it actually mentioned? Was it a plot point?? Who knows.

I love how inclusive this series is. Magic, badass hardcore lady-types, and an overall feel-good read. This scene is such an easy concept that so many people don't understand. I have asked many of my patients how they would like to be addressed. It's not hard to respect someone in a way that makes them comfortable. Kudos to the LumberJanes for getting it!

My reading stats for the month of December. It was a good reading month. Some really fun books. On to 2019 where I am challenging myself to read the books I already own.

So here‘s what happened: I knew I was going to have 11 days off, so I placed ALL THE LIBRARY HOLDS. Even though we‘ve been busy (all the family for Christmas+), and at the end of the year I clean everything out.
Do you see anything that‘s a must read?

jpmcwisemorgan Girls of Paper and Fire because my hold came in before Christmas and I knew I‘d not have time to read it so I took it back. I want to know how it is! 😀 6y
AmyG Is that To Kill a Mockingbird? THAT ONE! 6y

megnews I did the same thing with my library holds. Used 6 vacation days and have 16 total off with all the holidays. Don‘t go back til January 7 and I‘ve got a pile bigger than I‘ll read by then. I like having options. 😂 6y
8little_paws FRIDAY BLACK 6y
BookInMyHands @TheBookkeepersApprentice Have you read this graphic novel version? The original is a favorite of mine. 6y
emtobiasz I think Squirrel Girl is a must-read, but you‘ll know in the first volume whether the sense of humor works for you. I have Unbroken in my library pile too, but haven‘t picked it up yet. 6y
TheBookkeepersApprentice @BookInMyHands I haven‘t, I will have to check it out! 6y
BookInMyHands @jpmcwisemorgan You bring up a good point- I started Girls of Paper and Fire since it has the most holds. Then it‘s Friday Black @8little_paws ! 6y
BookInMyHands @megnews Haha! I like options too! Unfortunately it often means living with library fines too. Below $25 for the year is one of my goals this year. 6y

Yetis and roller derby. What a great concept. Loved this one!

MockTurtle I‘ve been wanting to give these a try. Is it important to start with the first in the series, or not? 6y
ReadingOver50 @MockTurtle each volume is a stand alone story, but past events are referenced. I think you can enjoy them out of order but it is better to read them in order. 6y

saresmoore My daughter is a bit younger, but she loves the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi 6y
saresmoore I would maybe do a pre-read, but I‘ve also heard good things about 6y
saresmoore And I‘ll second the Raina Telgemeier recommendations. She‘s amazing. 6y
Melissa_J My twelve year old daughter loves Raina Telgemeier, so I am in full agreement with the others who have recommended her. 6y
batsy I wonder if this might be something of interest 6y
emtobiasz Squirrel Girl has a similar sense of humor and is a long-running series to work through 6y

Spending a little time this morning working on #13in3 (about two hours done) and catching up with Lumberjanes. I love this comic so much, although I do kind of miss the original artwork. It‘s been a while since I picked this up and I didn‘t even recognize Jo. 😱

JenlovesJT47 Aww that‘s one of the things I liked about the first few volumes, the artwork. Bummer. 6y
DGRachel @JenlovesJT47 Yeah, it‘s a little disappointing, but I still love the storylines and characters. The girls are so wonderful and such great role models. 6y
Samplergal Yay. I don‘t know the series but anything that improve role models for future strong women rocks. 6y

@JenlovesJT47 Here‘s my stack for the #graphicnovel #marathon Thanks for the push to catch up on all my back issues of Lumberjanes!!

JenlovesJT47 Yay! I haven‘t read past volume 5. I really really want to read Paper Girls, I‘m hoping they have it on Hoopla! 6y
DGRachel @JenlovesJT47. Shouldn‘t you be reading the stack you have that‘s due back on Wednesday, not checking out new ones? 🤣🤣🤣 6y

Just when I thought this series couldn‘t get any cuter volume 9 proves me wrong. I love the edition of Barney at the camp. Love the continuing diversity in the series. Absolutely love the addition of roller derby in this book. It would be nice if we could get more scenes of Barney and Ripley together I think they would be great friends.
