The Newbery Honor Award Winner and New York Times bestseller Roller Girl is a heartwarming graphic novel about friendship and surviving junior high through the power of roller derbyperfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier'sSmile! For most of her twelve years, Astrid has done everything with her best friend Nicole. But after Astrid falls in love with roller derby and signs up for derby camp, Nicole decides to go to dance camp instead. And so begins the most difficult summer of Astrid's life as she struggles to keep up with the older girls at camp, hang on to the friend she feels slipping away, and cautiously embark on a new friendship. As the end of summer nears and her first roller derby bout (and junior high!) draws closer, Astrid realizes that maybe she is strong enough to handle the bout, a lost friendship, and middle school in short, strong enough to be a roller girl. In this graphic novel debut that earned a Newbery Honor and five starred reviews, real-life derby girlVictoria Jamieson has created an inspiring coming-of-age story about friendship, perseverence, and girl power! From the Trade Paperback edition.

What an awesome book! I loved this story about finding oneself and working hard. Astrid learns a lot about being a friend over the summer before junior high. I need my own copy of this one to file with Shannon Hale‘s Real Friends.

Official Wrap-up for the #MiddleGradeMadeEasy portion of #BBRC! These were all solid picks that I really enjoyed, with the exception of Heidi. I'm hoping to read the rest of the Percy Jackson series over winter break.

On to #TeenAngst...highly appropriate as we have our fair share of early teen angst in my home these days! 😂

I would love to have this book in a 3-5 grade classroom! It is a great tool for children to have while they are navigating their 9-14 years! They will be able to relate to it, and also enjoy the pictures and story line as well! Easy read for them because it is comic style!

Roller Girl- Published in 2015 is a NewBery Honor book about a girl who falls in love with Roller Derby. She is going into her teenage years and she realizes that her friends may not all be into the same things as her. She‘s finding herself while trying to accept that people are not always going to stay the same forever. It is a perfect description of what it is like to grow up in today‘s society, and a great example of how to handle change!

I loved this! This was recommended to me by my friend‘s daughter and I must say she has great taste. A coming of age story about friendships and not giving up on your dreams, any kid (or adult) could relate to what Astrid is going through. The plot was easy to follow, the illustrations were fun and a great introduction to roller derby. Highly recommend!

A super fun story about finding new friends, a new focus and courage you didn't know you had! I grew up in the days when derby was televised and had a friend who was a jeerleader for a team in Brooklyn so the culture is familiar to me. These chicks are badass and wonderful role models for anyone!!

SO adorable! Love stories about kids reflecting on how they weren‘t their best self, then making things right. I enjoyed learning all about roller derby: it‘s so badass!

The part where Zoe dyes Astrid‘s hair kills me because that was my life as a teen omg. Also a huge fan of the Hugh Jackman tributes 😭😍 full review on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2888735791

#30junebooks - day 23. For today‘s prompt of “N”, I asked my nine year old to choose nine of her favorite books off her shelf. She came up with 2 graphic novels, 2 Harry Potter-ish books, a Dork Diaries, an Ever After High, a Percy Jackson, a science book, and a Bible. She‘s eclectic... or well-rounded, depending on how you look at it. 🙂 #raisingreaders

This was an excellent middle grade graphic novel about a girl named Astrid and the summer before middle school. She and her best friend are growing apart and she's trying to figure out who she is as everything changes. She spends the summer in roller derby camp and it helps her find confidence and friendship. A great message about being yourself, following your passion, and taking risks. A great read for all ages!

It is my niece‘s 12th birthday today! She is my brother‘s step daughter, and when I first met her 3 or 4 years ago she hated to read. They live several states away, so I don‘t see her as often as I would like, but she loves the Lumberjanes comics and other graphic novels I send her. She also loves Monster High. A book seller recommended the tagged book for her.
Any recommendations for a middle grade series similar in vibe to Lumberjanes?

drmcscrewhammer This is a super fun series. Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova plus the accompanying books would be great. And perhaps Giant Days. The characters are in their freshman year of college, but it‘s mostly PG-13 5mo

This book was such a delight! Middle grade/younger YA about a 12-year-old wanting to learn roller derby while also dealing with the pains and anxieties of growing up. I loved Astrid and found her very relatable; she is definitely a real kid with complex emotions. All the roller derby stuff is so fun, but the book also explores deeper issues without being preachy. The storyline of drifting friends and making news ones is done particularly well. ⬇️

Zelma I finished this as I was piled onto by Skippy and Toby. I am just furniture to them sometimes. 🙄😆 @MinDea #Shippy 2y

Zelma @MinDea we lucked out with these two. We specifically got Toby so Skippy would have a playmate; he was more energetic than Radar and driving him nuts. It worked out in our favor, though all 3 get in skirmishes daily. That act like total brothers - fighting then snuggling. 2y
