Giant Days #1
Giant Days #1 | John Allison
29 posts | 35 read | 22 to read
WHY WE LOVE IT: John Allison is well known for his funny and intelligent webcomics Bad Machinery and Scary Go Round. His story of three friends at university lightly flavored with the occult features some of the best dialogue in comics, and we couldnt help but think its like Monty Python goes to college. Sign us up! WHY YOULL LOVE IT: John Allisons daily webcomics are hilarious, the kind of strips where every panel makes you laugh out loud. As a result, John has earned a large, loyal following of readers that have followed his work daily for the past 12 years. This is a series fans of things like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim, or Gunnerkrigg Court will not want to miss. WHAT ITS ABOUT: Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends because their dorm rooms were next to each other. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of hand-wringing boys, "personal experimentation," influenza, mystery-mold, nu-chauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of "academia," they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive.

Here's my July #bookspin, with lots of comics and GNs I've already requested from the library. Wasn't able to get my hands on a copy of Circe (my June bookspin) until recently so it's going back on the list.

Thanks! @TheAromaofBooks

Book #9: I loved it... but there have been so many amazing graphic novels and comics lately that this isn‘t necessarily the next to-be-purchased series... I would like to see if I can get them from the library though! Had a Lumberjanes vibe - very funny and great femme energy.

#bookreport time - it‘s Saturday here in NZ

87yo Dad‘s reading -He loved The Shipwreck Hunter but bailed on Enemy at the Gates because it was too detailed for him.

9yo‘s reading - Finished Vanished, book2 in a series he LOVES. He‘s also listening to audio books and reading graphic novels on an app called Epic. I finished reading The Subtle Knife aloud to him. First time I‘ve read it and managed to cry and read simultaneously 😭⬇️

Centique My reading - Giant Days was adorable! Frankissstein gave me all the lovely Mary Shelley feels (love her, love Byron, love Shelley) and I think I‘ll buy the Famous Five cookbook - I want to make a load of things from it. 5y

ljuliel Has your dad tried Pirate Hunters and Shadow Divers ? They‘re both by Robert Kurson. I thought maybe if he liked the book about the ocean , he might like these. I‘ve read the pirate one and it was really good. Haven‘t gotten to the other one yet. 5y
Centique @ljuliel yes! He loved both of them. I‘m getting him all the Robert Kurzon books. 😍 We may soon get to the point where he has read ALL the shipwreck books! 😂 5y
ljuliel That‘s great. Has he read books like Unbroken ? It‘s not the exact same category but it‘s so good. 5y
merelybookish Looks like a good reading week at your house! 😀 5y
Centique @ljuliel yes he loved that too! 😊 I honestly scour non fiction book lists all over the internet to keep him happily reading. 😂 Hes read all the Mary Roach books, he‘s working through Bill Bryson and he loves a good memoir. He‘s read most of the World War ones and now I‘m getting him outside of Europe; he loved In Order To Live and The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind. 😊👍 5y
Centique @merelybookish I‘m relying on family members to make up for the fact that I only read one novel myself! 😂😂 5y
ljuliel That‘s wonderful that he enjoys reading so much ! 5y
batsy Love the family reading report! And I'm glad you liked Frankisstein; I adore Mary Shelley but Winterson's A Gap of Time didn't work for me so was waffling a bit on whether to read it. 5y
readordierachel Love this post 💕 5y
marleed So sweet! 5y
Centique @batsy I saw someone else post that there are Winterson books she loves and Winterson books she hates - so you might have a similar experience? I‘ll have to try another to find out as well. If this hadn‘t been about Shelley it may not have worked so well for me. 5y
Centique @readordierachel thank you Rachel! 😘 5y
Centique @marleed thank you Marlee! 😘 PS I have a niece named Marlece, and we call her Marlee as a nickname 😊 5y

Giant Days is a reread. At least of these five volumes. I first read them a few years ago but didn‘t keep up so I was thrilled to see all the volumes on the library shelves .

I hadn‘t heard of Hit-Girl before and the first volume wasn‘t available but hey the Canada volume is written by Jeff Lemire!

Diary of a Tokyo Teen was something I spotted while browsing the memoirs shelves. It looks cute!

xicanti I liked DIARY OF A TOKYO TEEN a lot! 5y
Reign_5.0 Are these like graphic novels/ comic books, or Manga? The covers are nice 5y

I had read this a few years ago and really enjoyed it then, but for some reason didn‘t keep up with the series. It was even better than I remembered. I find myself laughing out loud and reminiscing about the antics I had with my college buddies.

Hey Book Butterflies!

Hope you've been enjoying a book-filled weekend! I know I am. And had so much fun reading for Dewey's 24-Hr #Readathon! Here's how I did...
Hrs read: 21
Bks read: 3 finished (Girl at the Grave, The Woman in Cabin 10, Giant Days, Vol. 1), 1 started (The Book of M), 1 continued (House of Gold)
No blackout, but I did get bingo twice! Not bad for someone in a reading slump! ^_^

Did you join #Deweyoct Readathon? How did you do?

OMG, I'm not sure if I'd want these 3 in my circle while at university. They discover themselves and it is comical?I know I wasn't that weird at 18.
They get the flu, placed on the "fresh meat" list, question their sexual preference, party like White Chicks but not with the same budget, get a pet and publish a misandrist blog. All in the first semester!

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn‘t expecting it to be as funny as it was. It made me laugh out loud several times. The only downside was that I kept thinking that maybe I was reading the books out of order. There‘s a lot of backstory that isn‘t revealed until later in the book. So for the first 2 chapters I felt like maybe I missed something. That might have just been a me thing.

Monologue when I started reading The Heir, after reading the 3 previous books and not enjoying them: Why am I doing this to myself again?

An adorable graphic novel about three girls who are just trying to make it through the first few weeks of university together. I love all three of them, and their friendship makes me miss my college days with my bestie. 💞 Excited to see that there are so many issues. I will be reading them all. 💞 #graphicnovel #graphic #giantdays #bestfriends #collegedays #comics #graphicnovels #hoopla

Giant Days vol 1

A "slice of life"-type series about 3 girls who've become good friends shortly after starting college. The story is easy to follow and the characters are quite interesting. I love the colors used in the illustrations ?

I can't truly relate to all their random undergraduate encounters, but it was entertaining to read about them ?

I ordered this book after several here recommended it. The story sounded good. I guess I didn't look to closely because I was surprised when it arrived and was a graphic novel. I don't enjoy graphic novels. I handed it to my NON READER teenager, who has occasionally given passing nod to manga and verse when forced to read somethimg. She sat down and read the whole thing in one afternoon and is begging for the others. Thank you Litsy!

Suzze I thought I didn't like graphic novels either, but I love Giant Days! 8y
Zelma Great outcome! 8y
