Eager
Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter | Ben Goldfarb
14 posts | 12 read | 19 to read
In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America's lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of "Beaver Believers"--including scientists, ranchers, and passionate citizens--recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them. From the Nevada deserts to the Scottish highlands, Believers are now hard at work restoring these industrious rodents to their former haunts. Eager is a powerful story about one of the world's most influential species, how North America was colonized, how our landscapes have changed over the centuries, and how beavers can help us fight drought, flooding, wildfire, extinction, and the ravages of climate change. Ultimately, it's about how we can learn to coexist, harmoniously and even beneficially, with our fellow travelers on this planet.

I‘ve also found beavers cute, but I never had any idea how important they are to developing habitat, preventing catastrophic flooding, balancing the ecosystem and more. This book is completely fascinating and so engagingly written. I‘m truly a beaver believer now and can‘t recommend this more! 🦫🦫🦫🦫🦫

SamAnne Such a great book! I love beavers. 4y

This was fascinating. I never knew how important beavers and beaver dams are to the environment. The author explains their significance in an easy to understand and engaging manner. Anyone interested in nature would enjoy reading this.

It's my #doublespin book for #bookspinbingo and "Author's first name starts with a B" for #Booked2021.

A definite pick! Terrific storytelling about beavers and how they effect ecosystems. Goldfarb is a terrific writer and the best kind of science writer who can make complex ideas seem understandable. You don‘t have to like beavers to appreciate this tale of their role as a lynchpin species with an outsized role in shaping landscapes and ecosystems. Recommend this title to anyone interested in a good nature story!

Chelsea.Poole This sounds so interesting! 4y
DrexEdit @Chelsea.Poole I did not realize how interesting beavers are and how many issues their continued existence encompasses. I cannot believe there is no beaver emoticon! 😂 4y
Chelsea.Poole lol @DrexEdit I was looking for one too! 4y

DrexEdit @Lcsmcat lol! 😄 😄 It does paint a pretty good picture, doesn't it. Not bad for a science book. 5y
L. G. Cullens Got it, and it's next on my to read list. 5y
DrexEdit @L. G. Cullens I've been reading bits and pieces as I get the chance so haven't gotten very far, but I am liking it! 5y

York station, on my way home from a weekend with my little grandson and family. I‘ll be able to get back to reading Eager again. Learning a lot!

‘In many corners of North America, it‘s harder to think of an animal that doesn‘t use beaver compounds than one that does. Aquatic insects shelter in the nooks and crannies of dams and lodges. Ducks nest in the grasses that spring up around pond fringes. Songbirds perch in coppicing willows... turtles and lizards are more abundant near beaver ponds..; that beavers increase plant species, ... fishes... mink... raccoons... frogs... mosses...‘

TheReadingCompanion @Severnmeadows isn‘t wonderful? I can‘t wait to see some of those busy fellows rummaging about! 5y

I really liked this book! Finished listening while gardening today (forgot to take a pic and now it‘s dark). I learned so much about beavers and am convinced of their importance in our ecosystem. plus there were a lot of references to the Northwest, where I grew up, and California, where I now live. It was nicely written with an overall appreciation for nature. I‘d give it about 4.5🌟

BooksForEmpathy Have never heard of this and now thanks to you, beavers are on my radar! What‘s the coolest fact you learned about them!? 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy I think what I took away most about beavers was how integral they are to the ecosystem, allowing other animals, fish, trees, even butterflies and the water table to flourish when they are able to build their dams. But my fave fact personally was about Peter S Ogden, for whom an elementary school in my hometown is named. I‘ve always wondered who he is and it turns out he was a trapper for the Hudson‘s Bay Co and noted asshole lol 6y

#nonfiction2019 #SomethingYouWerentLookingFor | This was an Audible daily deal last week and I grabbed it without knowing anything about it! Wow! It was great! Goldfarb is a journalist who did a ton of research for this, but it‘s written like a great story, totally engaging! Superb on audio with Will Damron narrating! The book just won 🏅2019 PEN/E.O Wilson prize for literary science writing!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds really good, and I‘ve never heard of this one before. 6y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - yeah i hadnt either, I‘m so glad I discovered it! Highly recommend it! (edited) 6y

5 stars. Part natural history, part plea to bring beavers back to landscapes. Excellent writing. Ben is smart, funny and passionate about beavers! Solastalgia: the emotional distress we feel at witnessing the destruction of beloved homelands: the dissonance of change, the rapidity of loss, the disorientation wrought by environmental grief. Soliphilia: the notion of political commitment to saving loved home environments.

SamAnne This book is like a really great New Yorker article. If you think you aren‘t interested in beavers, river restoration, natural history, it will suck you in. A great book for the lay person as well as folks like me involved in river restoration. 6y
Hooked_on_books My house backs onto a creek and I‘ve seen a couple of beavers there. I may have to read this one! 6y
SamAnne #Hooked_on_books Ben just won a PEN award and it was listed in WaPost‘s top ten non-fiction books for 2018. It‘s a great read. I used to have a neighbor beaver too. I love them. 6y
Lindy Stacked. I‘m a fan of beavers and their water engineering feats too. If you want more along these lines: 6y

Wonderfully written book. Halfway through. I work on river restoration and have lived near beavers so it is right up my alley. But anyone could get engrossed in this interconnected story involving American history, ecology and a large industrious rodent. No wonder the Washington Post included it in a list of best non-fiction of 2018.
