The Decision

This intriguing novel follows German author Thomas Mann during three crucial days in 1936. Away in Switzerland and fearing arrest by the Nazis upon his return to Germany, Mann must choose whether to travel back to Munich. He decides to release an open letter to the regime in a Swiss newspaper but is then tortured by doubt: his Jewish publisher in Germany will be furious with the unwelcome attention Manns letter is sure to bring, and by choosing exile, isnt the writer abandoning his loyal readers back home? Will the Nazis burn his books? Will they confiscate his diaries, which include intimate, homoerotic confessions? Britta Bhler shows us one of the twentieth centurys greatest writers as a family man, a father, a writer, and a man with moral doubts. We see a human soul trapped in a historical setting that forces him to make a seemingly impossible choice. A convincing depiction of a dilemma addressed only sparsely in Manns own writings, The Decision eloquently explores the all-too-human price of confronting totalitarianism.

So me....how do you decide what to read? #FridayFunFact

DogEaredBooks I choose a stack and then have someone else choose one. 5y
kspenmoll Totally by mood. I usually have more than one going on at a time. 5y
jlabombard10315 Lots of different ways! Sometimes I try and alternate genres, others I just go to the first unread book on my Kindle, and sometimes I let my stepdaughter pick. 5y
Freespirit Yes mood for me too.. I finish one, go to the TBR bookcase and spend time contemplating my next book. I don‘t think I could plan ahead 5y

Hey guys!! I‘m super excited for #LMPBC #Round6

I think I gathered the genre ideas for the most part, any thoughts on what books we should read?

I‘m not opposed to not having any kind of theme if that‘s the way we want to go 😬

OriginalCyn620 I‘m going to make a post with possible options for me! I‘d like to make sure to at least pick something we all haven‘t read yet! 😊 5y
Samreamer Yay! So excited! I‘m going through my tbr list and will come back with some suggestions! 5y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures @OriginalCyn620 and @Samreamer sounds perfect! I‘ll start doing the same, just wanted to get the ball rolling just in case lol 5y

I can definitely forget about using this half of my knitting basket again. After toppling it off the chest of drawers it was standing on, I have now moved it to the floor.

Now what to listen to while #audioknitting today?
Churchill's Secretary or Grin and Beard it - can't decide

Tamra @julesG try rolling up a little piece of paper into ball & toss it in. Mine love it! 7y
Mdargusch Wow! Cozy cat! 😻 What are you knitting? 7y
julesG @Tamra She doesn't like paper balls either. What gets her attention is the cardboard roll from toilet paper, though. 😸 7y
julesG @Mdargusch It's a secret project. I'm knitting up some sock yarn for a book swap parcel. But sssshhh, don't tell anyone. 😁 After that, I need to knit a pair of socks for my son and then I'm going to work on the next shawl. 7y

Marvelous novel about Thomas Mann's final decision to give up on Germany in 1936. Mann had already fallen afoul of the Nazis, and realized that his exile would become permanent. Much musing over Wagner, his Joseph novels (the third of which he was then writing) and the first inklings of Doktor Faustus. Intense book which I just read in a single snowed in afternoon!

Hobbinol Hmm. 🤔I think I'll have to read this one. I don't know why the lives of most of my favorite writers disgust me. I've read a biography about Mann and I think further discussion on this very topic would be interesting. Stacked!🙂 8y
QuintusMarcus I just ordered a few biographies of Mann, I've never read one. On the reading list for 2017! 8y
