She Begat This: 20 Years of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill | Joan Morgan
12 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
Celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the acclaimed and influential debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with this eye-opening and moving exploration of Lauryn Hill and her remarkable artistic legacy. Released in 1998, Lauryn Hills first solo album is often cited by music critics as one of the most important recordings in modern history. Artists from Beyonc to Nicki Minaj to Janelle Mone have claimed it as an inspiration, and it was recently included in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, as well as named the second greatest album by a woman in history by NPR (right behind Joni Mitchells Blue). Award-winning feminist author and journalist Joan Morgan delivers an expansive, in-depth, and heartfelt analysis of the album and its enduring place in pop culture. She Begat This is both an indelible portrait of a magical moment when a young, fierce, and determined singer-rapper-songwriter made music history and a crucial work of scholarship, perfect for longtime hip-hop fans and a new generation of fans just discovering this album.

A wonderful book examining the The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album. I loved the enthusiasm in which Morgan took on this topic, which is dear to my heart.

(Day 13 - #DreadlockHoliday)

*Because I saw @TrishB ‘s post featuring Nile Rodgers, who I love...because I love music...because I love Lauryn Hill...does it go with the prompt? Maybe not. But if I get to gratuitously post a pic of Lauryn Hill, do I care? Maybe not. Discuss. (kidding)
Oh, and the book‘s pretty good, too.

Cinfhen The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 🙌🏻🎵well done 5y
Blaire One of the best albums! 5y
TrishB Good choice 👍🏻 5y

BarbaraBB She was so cool! No idea what became of her, do you? 5y
SW-T @BarbaraBB She did some sporadic recording and touring, and had tax problems. Was writing a script but dropped it and declined several acting jobs to focus on her kids & church. Think she does the occasional tour now and included a few new songs so she‘s kinda sorta still around. 5y
BarbaraBB Thank you, That‘s good to know. I hadn‘t heard from her for years. @SW-T (edited) 5y
gradcat @Blaire I know, right? I love, love, love that album! ♥️ 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen @TrishB @BarbaraBB Thanks for commenting...you guys DO know I love that, right? ♥️❤️🙏 5y
gradcat @SW-T Did she actually have to serve time at one point? Over the tax evasion charges? Seems like I remember something like that. Plus, Hill seemed to be tired of being a public figure, too, I think 🤔 She does have a website with a rather lengthy “response” to people (e.g., Robert Glasper) who have said things about her in the press or otherwise...it‘s from last year (and it‘s REALLY long). (edited) 5y
SW-T @gradcat Yes, she did three months in jail and there were also a couple months of home confinement. Saw a show about her on Reelz channel. She wasn‘t prepared to be so huge so fast and wasn‘t prepared for everything that came with the fame. 5y
gradcat @SW-T I think she‘s taken a lot of s&*t from people. But she‘s so talented... 5y
SW-T Agreed! 5y

I am not a music head but I do have a few favorote albums and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of them. I loved it from the first time I heard Doo Wop when I was 10 years old. This was a really interesting look at what this album meant for feminisim, and intersectionality. Helped me put im words a lot of the feelings I have when listening to Ms. Hill #blackgirlsrock #blackgirlmagic #blisty
#booked2019 A book about a musician

Cinfhen Missed this but what a great choice 🎵🙌🏻 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Oooh, I‘d read this. Thanks! (On a side note, our kids‘ grandma used to take ballet class in NJ with Lauren and says she‘s lovely. Nana is 95 and still going to class, although not as able to do everything as she used to be.) (edited) 5y
sammisho @BarbaraTheBibliophage That is amazing! I would love to take a class with Lauryn (and grandma, she seems pretty cool too)! 5y
Chelleo Ohhhh stacking and noting #chelleotbr to track where I learned of this! 5y

Fascinating deep-dive into Lauryn Hill‘s seminal album, hip hop culture and the way America treats celebrity but more specifically, black women.

Weaponxgirl I loved this and had to buy the album straight after I read it. 6y

Yea, I have a problem. Several actually and should probably stop reading books about music as I just get all inspired. I‘m going to listen to the dissect podcast that has a series on this album as recommended by @GeekShique after I‘ve given this a good listen to. #booksandvinyl

Weaponxgirl The lighting in my flat is horrible for taking photos I know 6y
CBee This album is incredible 😍😍😍 6y
Weaponxgirl @CBee It‘s a classic isn‘t it! 6y

SW-T Great album 😊 And if books about music inspire you, read, listen, and enjoy! (edited) 6y
Ggggg yessss that's boss! you'll be such an expert on Lauryn Hill now 😁 enjoy the album and the podcast 6y
CBee @Weaponxgirl for sure! I‘m going to have to listen to it again soon, it‘s been too long 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Emilymdxn Amazing!!! Support this so hard 6y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T thanks 😊 my wallet is screaming at me but not my fault theirs so much amazing stuff out there. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GeekShique she is such an interesting person! Thanks for the recommendation again I‘m looking forward to it 😊 6y
Weaponxgirl @CBee for me too! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn reading is such an immersive experience for me. It will literally inspire everything else I‘m doing. Music, food, clothes I‘m a huge sponge and a geek. 6y
Emilymdxn What a wonderful way to be! I‘m similar, I fall down huge holes of needing to immerse myself in whatever I read about. I love to plan a holiday somewhere and vanish into books and food from that place in advance so I can be as hyped as possible and immersed in it when I go 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn that would be amazing! At the last book chat I ran a few of us were talking about how food is a gateway to another culture and how some cookbooks totally count as literature. 6y
Emilymdxn I adore food writing! I‘m a terrible cook so I read very few actual recipes, I‘m trying to read more, but I love books that are generally about food and our relationships with it. I suffered from q bad disordered eating a while ago and reading about food helped me build up a good relationship with it again, food writing is powerful stuff 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn that‘s amazing that helped. I taught myself to cook in my late teens and early twenties from books. The trick is to get books that don‘t just give you recipes as it‘s shocking how many are not well tested (never trust a book that tells you to cook an onion for 5min, it should tell you how it should be instead) I really like this book she also has a series on Netflix. Also Nigel slater is amazing! 6y
Emilymdxn I‘ve been really wanting that book!! I trust your recs a lot so I might include it in my next payday order. I adore everything Ruby Tandoh has ever written so much. It‘s amazing knowing exactly what goes into food, holding and appreciating and enjoying all the ingredients in your hands and smelling it cook. For my trip to Texas in a few months I want to try reading books from there while I can hear my food sizzling... 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn ruby tandoh is wonderful! It‘s learning how it should feel, look and smell that‘s the trick. After that you will get a good instinct for recipes and flavours that go together for you. And always have a frozen pizza available in case you mess up. We all do! I‘ve never been to Texas but I do love southern food cookbooks! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn I was thinking about food books on Texas (can‘t find many) but I thought you might like this one if it‘s not on your radar already. I haven‘t read it yet but I‘ve been meaning to for ages 6y
Weaponxgirl I also have this one and its and it‘s a nice one full of little snippets 6y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve seen this one but I haven‘t been able to get a look at as not in my library 6y

Boom! This was amazing! You don‘t even need to know much about Lauryn Hill to love this book but I guarantee that you will be putting the album on as soon as you are done reading this.
This talks about the climate when the album dropped both politically and musically and some great thoughts about how we treat artists and their output like we own them.
A relevant read for today as well as one that looks back #readblackwomen

Ggggg If you like this book maybe you should check the dissect podcast on Spotify it has a miniseries on the miseducation as well and it's defenitely worth a listen 6y
Weaponxgirl @GeekShique ohh thanks! I don‘t have Spotify atm but I‘ll look into it. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GeekShique I found it on iTunes and I‘m gonna go through it when the album arrives in the post. Thanks for the recommendation 6y
