Beyonc in Formation
Beyonc in Formation: Remixing Black Feminism | Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley
7 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
Making headlines when it was launched in 2015, Omiseeke Natasha Tinsleys undergraduate course Beyonc Feminism, Rihanna Womanism has inspired students from all walks of life. In Finding Beyonc, Tinsley now takes her rich observations beyond the classroom, using the blockbuster album and video Lemonade as a soundtrack for vital next-millennium narratives. Woven with candid observations about her life as a feminist scholar of African studies and a cisgender femme married to a trans spouse, Tinsleys Femme-onade mixtape explores myriad facets of black womens sexuality and gender. Turning to Beyoncs Dont Hurt Yourself, Tinsley assesses black feminist critiques of marriage and then considers the models of motherhood offered in Daddy Lessons, interspersing these passages with memories from Tinsleys multiracial family history. Her chapters on nontraditional bonds culminate in a discussion of contemporary LGBT politics through the lens of the internet-breaking video Formation, underscoring why Beyoncs black femme-inism isnt only for ciswomen. From pleasure politics and the struggle for black womens reproductive justice to the subtext of blues and country music traditions, the landscape in this tour is populated by activists and artists (including Loretta Lynn) and infused with vibrant interpretations of Queen Beys provocative, peerless imagery and lyrics. In the tradition of Roxanne Gays Bad Feminist and Jill Lepores bestselling cultural histories, Finding Beyonc is the work of a daring intellectual who is poised to spark a new conversation about freedom and identity in America.

In her examination of Lemonade, we get to meet the people in the author‘s life that speak to the American experience. The discussion of race, family and love in this book is done with the complexity the subjects deserve. The ability to open these things and ponder tough questions is why I read. None of the questions are easily answered which is why they are worth asking.

Today‘s #blameitonlitsy #libraryhaul I have been on quite a feminist and graphic novel kick. I will be reading one of these at another doctor‘s appointment tomorrow and I scheduled a late pick- up time in case I have to have any scans. Hopefully I won‘t and will have a couple of hours reading time until my ride comes. My concentration is sooo much better when I am trying to avoid people, lol, I don‘t know why 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ not a social 🦋, lol ❤️

Mimi28 Oh, and I got the referral for the pain clinic from my pain-in-the-butt primary care doctor!! 👍🏽👍🏽 I am going to wait to make the appointment though cuz the specialist I see tomorrow has tons of scans to fax to them, lol. I‘m grateful though, I‘m grateful 🙏🙏 6y

Ended the book festival with Dr. Tinsley talking about her book (that was partially modeled after her UT course) about Beyoncé and black feminism. I don‘t think her book is out yet, but I‘ll be keeping an eye out for it.

It was so cool meeting up with fellow littens and being surrounded by bookish people this weekend (and the weather was fantastically lovely as well) #txbookfest #atx

My_novel_obsession Wish I could have been there for the second day! Maybe next year I can make a weekend of it. 6y
