"Lupton enters the highly charged ring where the best psychological detective writers spar...Like Kate Atkinson, Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell Both tear-jerking and spine-tingling, "Sister"provides an adrenaline rush that could cause a chill on the sunniest afternoon."" The New York Times Book Review" When her mom calls to tell her that Tess, her younger sister, is missing, Bee returns home to London on the first flight. She expects to find Tess and give her the usual lecture, the bossy big sister scolding her flighty baby sister for taking off without letting anyone know her plans. Tess has always been a free spirit, an artist who takes risks, while conservative Bee couldn t be more different. Bee is used to watching out for her wayward sibling and is fiercely protective of Tess (and has always been a little stern about her antics). But then Tess is found dead, apparently by her own hand. Bee is certain that Tess didn t commit suicide. Their family and the police accept the sad reality, but Bee feels sure that Tess has been murdered. Single-minded in her search for a killer, Bee moves into Tess's apartment and throws herself headlong into her sister's life--and all its secrets. Though her family and the police see a grieving sister in denial, unwilling to accept the facts, Bee uncovers the affair Tess was having with a married man and the pregnancy that resulted, and her difficultly with a stalker who may have crossed the line when Tess refused his advances. Tess was also participating in an experimental medical trial that might have gone very wrong. As a determined Bee gives her statement to the lead investigator, her story reveals a predator who got away with murder--and an obsession that may cost Bee her own life. A thrilling story of fierce love between siblings, "Sister" is a suspenseful and accomplished debut with a stunning twist."

Engrossing. But a dumb ending.

Emilio‘s wife came out of the house, interrupting my silent solo. A security light switched on illuminating her path toward me. I imagined she was coming to appease the madwoman in the garden before I started boiling up the bunnies.

Peaceful_Reader Kept me interested but the end left me unsatisfied. 4y

The premise of this psychological thriller is great - a woman flies to London when her younger sister is reported missing. The book reveals that the sisters know very little about one another, but through her hunt, the older sister comes to recognize the importance of family and trust. The idea was great but the plot lagged at times. Good if you don‘t mind a mystery that moves slowly from time-to-time.

Family relationships - between sisters, between daughter and mother, absent father. Was she murdered, was it a suicide? I really enjoyed this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5

Overall I liked this, the style it was written in was interesting and done well, in my opinion. And it was a neat trick that the resolution to the main mystery was not super shocking ... because that wasn't actually where the big twist came in. The plot was a bit "Um what??" at times though, and the characters felt not very fleshed out. But it was enjoyable! 3/5 ⭐️

Maybe terror and dread, once experienced, embed themselves into you even when the cause has gone, leaving behind a sleeping horror, which is to easily awakened.

Between the superslow pace, writing style I couldn‘t connect to and characters I never warmed up to, it was quite hard to actually enjoy reading this story. It was a very slow ride and it took me a whole month to reach the final page. The last part did improve considerably and the final twist was a huge surprise that will make you reconsider everything you read before. I don‘t think that made up for the rest of the story though.

2,5/5 stars

I am going to beat you, Dutch book! Made it to chapter 15 and about 125 pages left... I can't say I like the story, but I'm going to make it to the end just so I can say I've read a book in Dutch this year. 😆😂

DarcysBookBlog You got this! 🙌🏻 7y
yvo_about_books @DarcysBookBlog thanks! Really don't like the story, pace, characters or writing style and I don't think it's because of the language barrier. 😕 Oh well, at least I read something in Dutch again. 😂😂 7y
DarcysBookBlog @yvo_about_books 😕 that's too bad you aren't enjoying the story. 7y
yvo_about_books @DarcysBookBlog the few that mentioned they tried it as well either DNFed or didn't enjoy it either, so I guess I'm not alone. 😉 7y

That's it: I'm finally going to keep the promise I made to myself to read at least one Dutch book this year. I need to finish I few ARCs first with upcoming deadlines, but then Sister (Zusje) it is... Boy this is going to be a struggle, because my Dutch is preeeeetty rusty. 😂😂

This was...weird. But not in a "wowzer!" sort of way, unfortunately. By the time it wrapped up, I felt a little like I'd spent a lot of time with someone who went out of their way to make our time together kind of exhausting. I do appreciate that the format of the story was unique and that the suspense was purposefully structured, but I just can't muster love for this one.

Tense and well-plotted. Didn't come close to figuring it out until almost the very end. (This pug is my official "this book was great!" picture and I am totally not sorry about it.)
