One decision. One family's future in ruins. When Jake Buckman decides to let Ryan, his sixteen-year-old son practice driving home along a deserted street, he has no idea of the deadly consequences. But in the darkness of night, a runner comes from nowhere and the hit is fatal. Now Jake and Ryan have two options: admit Ryan's responsibility ... or drive home as though nothing happened. What follows is not a clear-cut hit and run, but a split-second decision by a father who will do anything to protect his son. How much should a parent sacrifice for their child? And could any family survive the burden of such a terrible secret?

How far would you go to protect your loved ones? Suspenseful, page turner. The whole story takes place over a few days so you really feel like you‘re in the thick of it with these characters.

Funny story: I was talking to my husband about the premise of the book when I was just a couple of chapters in. He guessed the ending and I knew he was right so unfortunately, it wasn‘t a big twist for me. Next time, I won‘t be telling him a thing!! 🤣

It‘s been almost 7 months since my last book! I gave birth to my second daughter in May. So excited to start reading again after a long hiatus. These quiet mornings are lovely.

Traveling to my hometown where one sister loves a mystery so I threw a few into my suitcase to add to her TBR with an incentive to read this one before leaving it behind. I liked the concept (and these characters) of a good family making a horrible choice making a tragic accident criminal. But the ending didn‘t work for me. ...My hometown in the background.

keithmalek Where do you live that there's snow on the ground in May? 3y
marleed @keithmalek Isn‘t that hilarious. That would be my hometown of Butte, Montana. I live in Kansas City now but always have a place to come home to when I feel the need to wear a winter coat! 3y

Got 30 pages in and can‘t do this one anymore. The dialogue is unrealistic and I really don‘t like the characters, especially Jake.

One more bingo for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Not my favorite by Lisa Scottoline, but not bad. I didn‘t think it was as fast paced as her other books. I liked the idea of the story with the concept of what we would do to protect our kids and it can‘t together well. I just thought it was slow in parts.

At first I wasn't too sure about this book, being about a family being destroyed by a hit and run, then it turned out to be a page Turner, I needed to finish.
Another reason I like Lisa Scottoline books

A solid crime/drama/mystery (needs a bit more grit for me to call it a “thriller”) that makes for an entertaining audiobook. One secret begets more secrets and the tension builds toward the inevitable conclusion. Tied up a bit too neatly but still meets my audiobook qualifications for an easy-to-follow-without-being-mind-numbing read.

Let me start out by saying, I am a fan of this author. In fact to me she is a local superstar! That being said, this was not one of my favorites. The hit and run involving a father and son was believable, and I felt their anguish in deciding what to do. As the story moved along, it just got more and more far fetched. I am good at suspending belief, but this was too much.

4 stars. I've learned that Lisa Scottoline always goes the melodramatic route, but that's ok! They make for great lessons! I was genuinely surprised by the ending twist! I really enjoyed the character of Jake and found Pam insufferable a lot more than I prob should have. The narrator did a great job!

BeveragesAndBooks I did not care for this one - but I read it on paper and it just felt like a slog! Wonder if narration would have helped. 7y
MyNamesParadise @BeveragesAndBooks since the narration was good, it helped. Scottoline's books aren't the most realistic or best but enjoyable enough to pass the time! 7y

Jake Buckman is workaholic father trying to reconnect with his teen son Ryan so one night after a movie he allows the boy to drive even though he only has a permit. Unfortunately Ryan accidentally hits a girl and father and son cover the crime up. Chaos ensues. Good book, I tend to enjoy most of Scottoline's books.

I was listening to this one as an audiobook in the car, but I was too impatient and grabbed a paper copy to finish! I've never read anything by Scottoline before, but this one grabbed my attention! I'd like to read more from her if they are all this good!

Jennifer_BookishDevices I've enjoyed most of her work. Her latest, Most Wanted not so much. 8y
