Fallen into the Pit
Fallen into the Pit | Ellis Peters
7 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
In this hypnotically good debut, a Nazi murdered in an English village sets Sergeant Felse and his son on an investigation few want solved (Boston Sunday Globe). It is 1952, and the shadow of World War II still lies over the green fields of the small village of Comerford on the Welsh borders. When ex-prisoner of war Helmut Schauffler is murdered, local policeman Sergeant George Felse has his work cut out: Schauffler was Nazi to the core and the majority of the villagers had good reason to despise him. Sergeant Felses fourteen-year-old son, Dominicwho found Schaufflers body in a shallow brookis fascinated by the case. Much to his fathers disapproval, he resolves to find the murderera decision that places his own life in great danger. . . . Fallen Into the Pit is the 1st book in the Felse Investigations, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Pickpick

Despite the fact that I LOVE the Brother Cadfael books, I have never tried any of Peters's other stories. I came across this one secondhand a while ago and #MarchUnshelving inspired me to finally pick it up! It is a solid, although not mind-blowing, mystery with likable characters - once they got sorted, as there was a bit of a character dump in the beginning. While I didn't instantly bond with Felse like I did Cadfael, this was intriguing ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) enough for me to get the next two books in the series from the library to see if the series improves. These were written much earlier than Cadfael, and it does feel like Peters is still finding her stride.

#MarchUnshelving readathon - this was the final book I needed to complete to attain my goals, and I finished it yesterday, so I did complete all six books I set out to read!!

TheAromaofBooks Also visited Shropshire for #SeparatedbyaPondTour (@Andrew65) and checked of Strong Family Bonds for #MarchBookBingo 4y
TheAromaofBooks As a side note, this book was published in 1951 and the main thrust of the story deals with a German POW being homed into this small, rural community. It's obvious that Peters is struggling with this concept as well - how to move forward from the war while still being constantly bombarded with the results of it. There was a lot to ponder from this story & it made me wonder how much Peters was drawing from real life. 4y

Tineke What is this March Unshelfing everyone's talking about? 4y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks 👏👏👏 4y
Andrew65 @Tineke The aim is during March to try and read books from your own books shelves, and clear books of our physical bookshelves. Have tagged in @Clwojick is leading this drive. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Tineke - hopefully @Andrew65 was able to answer your questions!! It's just a loose challenge/encouragement for us to read books we already own for the month of March, and to also get rid of books we aren't going to read/reread. @Clwojick also hosted a readathon last week to kick off the month!! 4y
Clwojick Thanks for answering for me guys! @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks 4y

Fallen into the Pit | Ellis Peters

Just finished this book today with a main character named Dominic. Picked up The Last Waltz by Dorothy Mack (about as different as one can get) and... main character named Dominic! So weird.

My (probably overly) ambitious #weeklyforecast -
Almost done with the tagged book (not pictured). Hot Ice & The Last Waltz are for #MarchUnshelving, The Happy Camper is a review copy that got lost in the mail; review is due next week!! Mosquitoland is for #LMPBC & Sarah Ward books have been out from the library forever. When I saw Murakami was March's #authoramonth I remembered that 1Q84 was already on my TBR but I had no idea it clocked in at⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) almost 1000 pages!! Mixed feelings about reading it right now, but I think I will at least give it a try...

Clwojick You‘ll do great! ♥️🌟 4y
Buechersuechtling Oh, I perfectly understand your feelings about the Morikami book. That‘s why until now I refused to try to read it. If I came across it as an audiobook, I‘d be sure to give it a try. But as a physical book I think I‘ll give it a pass. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Is this #BookwormArrogance❓☺️🤔 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Buechersuechtling - haha I don't know if it's BookwormArrogance, but it may be smart thinking!!! This one is a seriously chunkster!! I can't imagine trying to listen to a book this long on audio, though - I have trouble concentrating on audiobooks. My main problem with fat books like this is that I like to haul my books around with me wherever I go, and this one just isn't very convenient for that style of reading!! 4y
Buechersuechtling @TheAromaofBooks If you ask me, it isn‘t very convenient for any style of reading because it will definitely be heavy. And heavy books can‘t be read while lying and I definitely like reading in bed, so there might be a slight problem there. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Buechersuechtling - my husband and I are those terrible people who read at every meal, so when I get a chunkster like this one I often leave it as my “table“ book and work on it at meals when I don't have to hold it up!! Then I choose a regular-sized book for the rest of my reading time. 4y
Buechersuechtling @TheAromaofBooks Clever you. 😄 I store that idea in the back of my head. Maybe the time will come where I profit from it. 4y

1. Tagged - last book for the #MarchUnshelving Readathon!
2. Always, which is part of the reason my progress on my own books is so slow! 😂 4 holds currently.
3. Two utterly obnoxious border collies - Waylon (gray & white, neurotic, obsessed with fetching) & Paisley (blue merle with a blue eye, absolute airhead, NONE of the classic border collie focus, nicknamed Muppet because she looks like one!), & also 14 hens.

Okay, #MarchUnshelfing goals!!

Short term, for the readathon, I would like to finish my two current reads, and then read four of my own books, including the tagged one!!

For the month of March, at least 50% of my reading to be my physical books, and to find at least 15 to donate (although lately my “donating“ has ended up being exchanging at LFLs haha)

Thanks for this challenge to help me focus on books I already own @Clwojick!!

Geenie 💖👍 4y
LinesUponAPage Sounds like a good plan to me!! Enjoy. 4y
reader_in_april I have so many books I need to read on my own shelf! But I always find myself going to the library. 4y
Clwojick I feel you! Those LFLs are hard to pass up! 4y
Crazeedi Great plan! Have a great week!💕 4y
