Curiouser_and_curiouser Thank you for bring this issue to my attention @MrsMalaprop ☺ I definitely agree with you on Spool of Blue Thread, loved that one! The first I ever read of hers was Patchwork Planet which was really lovely. I haven't had a chance to read Breathing Lessons or Back When We Were Grown Ups, nor The Accidental Tourist but all 3 are sitting on my shelf patiently waiting their turn. I think they all have a very similar feel & style, just pick 1 & enjoy! 4y

A week ago I asked for help in breaking my slump... and then I disappeared... for good reason.
That night, my sister-in-law had a stroke. We didn‘t know if she was going to survive the night.
So two things...

Second, now I‘m going to ask you for more books. If you know any good books for an 8 & 7 y.o. dealing with an ill parent, tell me about it.

LibrarianRyan So sorry. Most of the ones off the top of my head are when a parent dies like When a Monster Calls. Or the sibling is sick like Alcapone does my homework, or rules. I kill giants is excellent but is about cancer. Let me do some looking. 4y

LibrarianRyan There‘s one more but I can only get 1/2 the title right now. I can picture the cover. It has magic in the title and I remember it because parents wouldn‘t let their kids read it because it was about “magic”. It wasn‘t. It was about machines. And the machines are an allegory for fixing a “broken” human. I really liked it when I read it over a decade ago but I can‘t roll the title off my tongue at 2:30 am. So when I remember I will post it for you. 4y

Chrissyreadit I‘m so sorry that happened. It‘s really hard when a parent becomes disabled, especially when children are young. One suggestion I have is to see if the hospital she went to has a Child Life department. The Child Life Specialist May have some good suggestions to help children in tough situations. The second thought I have is to read books about children with disabilities- goodreads has a list I will link here- but this can help children understand 4y

Sweettartlaura Thanks, @Chrissyreadit ! These are great ideas. Right now, they haven‘t even been able to get a full neurological assessment to know what her deficits are & where they‘ll be starting. But there will surely be some disabilities to conquer ~ maybe permanently adjust to. This is great - I‘ll keep this list handy as we move through this 🙏🏻 4y

Sweettartlaura @Samplergal good to know! It‘s been 10 days since the event, and she‘s still “out of it.” She‘s no longer under sedation. But she‘s still not really awake/aware. She‘s responded to her name, and my brother‘s voice. But they can‘t do a full assessment yet. We do expect speech issues - the stroke was in that section of the brain, and she couldn‘t speak at all when it happened. So I‘ll keep you in mind moving forward - thanks 🙏🏻 4y

Samplergal Please do. Sounds like she is in good hands. She will likely understand more than she‘s able to give back. Keep talking to her. Audiobooks when she‘s up to it. Slow your speech to her and allow her time to try and respond. Ask for speech consult and see what MD is thinking. 4y

Samplergal Ask the SLP where your SIL is if she has any books for that age child. I‘m retired and not active with the latest. She may be able to write a social story for your niece if nothing else is available. I‘ll let the librarians suggest if they know something for that genre. 4y
