Tartuffe | Molière
23 posts | 53 read | 9 to read
The religious fraud Tartuffe has wormed his way into the affections and household of rich merchant, Orgon, with pantomime piety and counterfeit zeal. So comprehensively has he hoodwinked Orgon that he looks set to succeed in driving away the son, marrying the daughter, seducing the wife and imprisoning Orgon. Molière's classic satire was denounced on its first performance as a sacrilegious outrage and banned from further public view. Only after petition to Louis XIV was the ban lifted, and the play's trenchant mockery of human frailties has ensured its popularity ever since.

Here‘s a link to a great critique of Molière and his (at the time) scandalous play “Tartuffeâ€. Centuries ago the famous Molière pushed the French leaders of society and Church with satire much like Shakespeare did in England. Great quote #famousquotes

I read the adaptation by John Donnelly, which was set in London and had up-to-date references. Found it very funny! Good use of stereotypical comedic characters and plot lines. I haven‘t read any of Molière‘s other works, but I‘ll try to because I quite enjoyed reading Tartuffe.

While I have to give Shakespeare the number 1 spot, Molière is a close second! The language is amazing, but even more so is the understanding of human nature. Read it in translation if you must, but read it.

2018 started off with explosions at work which used all my spare brain power, so I‘m just now getting to my goal of reading more in French. ? Starting this morning with a bubble bath, coffee and Molière.

MayJasper Wishing you more brain power 😊 (were these explosions literal?) 7y
CoffeeNBooks I've just started reading a play in French! My first attempt at anything other than basic conversational French. 🗼🇫🇷 7y
Lcsmcat @MayJasper Thanks! No literal explosions, just my immediate supervisor getting fired and me being transferred from criminal defense to civil litigation, and the a case I‘m on going to trial. 7y

Lcsmcat @CoffeeNBooks I think plays are easier to follow than novels when you‘re starting out. What are you reading? 7y
MayJasper I see. Yes that is a huge amount to deal with. 7y
CoffeeNBooks @Lcsmcat I'm reading La Cantatrice Chauve. I really want to read En Attendant Godot. I teach that (in English) in my AP Literature class, but I thought it might not be challenging enough since I'm already so familiar with it. 7y
Lcsmcat I haven‘t read that one. I‘ve read Rhinoceros in both languages and Godot in English but that‘s the extent of my Ionesco. 7y

I enjoyed Tartuffe! I thought it was funny and the concept was brilliant!

Orgon, the head of the household, has become obsessed with religious fraud Tartuffe and everyone in the family can see he‘s a sham apart from Orgon, this ensues hilarity as the household tries to show has what an imposter Tartuffe is!

I bet it‘s even funnier on stage where the false poetry of Tartuffe can be really hammed-up!

1.) These are some of the costumes we‘re making for Tartuffe at work and the proportion and scale of them just makes me giggle.

2.) Pictionary!

3.) Nope. It‘s not a goal of mine but I am not anti-helicopter.

4.) Not particularly but it doesn‘t taste like soap to me either.

5.) Twitter, for sure. It‘s like a coffeehouse at the best of times, & careful application of mute/block is the key to keeping it cool.

Repost for anyone interested in doing some French language buddy reads in 2018. @Lcsmcat is taking suggestions for the buddy reads now so check out her feed and #FrenchLittens if you want in on the fun! I am just starting to learn French so I‘ll be reading mostly in translation, so don‘t be scared if you are also a French language newbie.

Redwritinghood I‘m interested. I have just started to learn French this year, but I‘m not sure I would be able to read anything beyond simple text yet. I‘ll follow along for now if I don‘t think I can keep up with the text. 7y
Lcsmcat @Redwritinghood Of course! There‘s no better way to learn than to dive right in. See my next Tartuffe post for the google form link. (edited) 7y

Hey #frenchlittens, anyone interested in joining French language buddy reads please nominate books you want to read in 2018. Once we have a list of potential reads I‘ll post them for a final vote. @CouronneDhiver @tournevis @mklong @julesG @writerlibrarian Share this post and/or tag people who might be interested. Thanks!

drokka I'm interested. I need to get back into reading French novels. 7y
Lcsmcat @drokka That‘s why I‘m doing this. So we can keep each other motivated. 7y
drokka Well, it's a brilliant idea. 7y
drokka Have we got a tally for some votes, or are we just going supportive reading (I'm good either way) 7y
Lcsmcat @drokka Either I don‘t know how to do a Google poll properly (likely!) or no one voted, so let‘s just support each other. If I see someone is reading something I own or have access to, I‘ll join in. 7y
drokka Sounds good to me! Maybe we can, over the next 10 months or so come up with a challenge for 2019 as well. I think it would help find French books I'm interested in. 7y
Lcsmcat @drokka That sounds great! I‘ve got so many on my shelves that I need to get to. 7y

Or should I say Qui veut être inclus? I‘m going to try to read more in French in 2018. I‘d love to do buddy reads on some, especially with others for whom French is a second language. Anyone want to join me for #Litsyenfrancais? #FrenchLittens? (Any ideas for a better hashtag? I had to remove the cedilla in français to make it a hashtag.)

Or read along in translation. 7y

This was my first Molière play and I really enjoyed it. It was a little difficult to follow as an audiobook at a few points, but overall enjoyable.

Mehso-so

Having never read this play in school, I was glad for the opportunity to use the Serial Reader app to break it down into short daily "bites." The statement the play makes on religious hypocrisy and greed is universal and timeless.

BookishFeminist I like Molière but I got really really sick of him after college bc I felt he & Rousseau were all my French profs assigned! 9y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishFeminist I can imagine! I'm using this for my play in the Read Harder Challenge. 9y
Lindy We studied a couple of Moliere's plays in high school & probably the greed & hypocrisy were part of our lessons but all I can remember is loving the humour. 9y

AliceInWonderLibrary I think how you consume this piece can be really important. If I had just read it I don't think I would have enjoyed it much but I read it in college for a costume design class and having to look at it from that angle made it more enjoyable. 9y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lindy One of the things I noticed about the development of the humor in the play was how much we still see a similar structure in today's movies and TV. 9y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @AliceInWonderLibrary Oh I would have loved that. I worked on costumes in high school and have always been fascinated with them. 9y
