They were near the edge of the glacier. The sea beneath the helicopter was dense with pack ice. In front of them, the endless whiteness stretched as far as the light could reach. It hurt his eyes. Millions of white crystals. Except in one place. One spot. Right where the mummified Norseman had been found and Aqqalu had kept watch. There, the ice was glossy red. When a mummified Viking corpse is discovered in a crevasse out on the edge of an ice sheet, journalist Matthew Cave is sent to cover the story. The next day the mummy is gone, and the body of the policeman who was keeping watch is found naked and flayedexactly like the victims in a gruesome series of murders that terrified the remote town of Nuuk in the 1970s. As Matt investigates, he is shocked by the deprivation and brutal violence the locals take for granted. Unable to trust the police, he begins to suspect a cover-up. Its only when he meets a young Inuit woman, Tupaarnaq, convicted of killing her parents and two small sisters, that Matt starts to realise how deep this story goesand how much danger he is in. Mads Peder Nordbo is a Danish-born author who has lived in Nuuk in Greenland for many years. He holds degrees in literature, communications and philosophy from the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Stockholm. He works in communications at the town hall in Nuuk, where he writes for the mayor of the municipality. Mads is the author of three novels, and The Girl without Skin is his crime debut. Rights have been sold in seventeen territories. Charlotte Barslund is a Scandinavian translator. She has translated novels by Peter Adolphsen, Mikkel Birkegaard, Thomas Enger, Karin Fossum, Steffen Jacobsen, Carsten Jensen and Per Petterson, as well as a wide range of classic and contemporary plays. She lives in the UK. The Girl Without Skin has everything the heart of a true crime novel could desire. Murder, eeriness, shivers, superstition, terrible secrets but at the same time you can feel the author's affection for Greenland. Krimifan The Girl Without Skin has is large parts a classical crime combined with a thrillers intensitybut just as much social criticism. VG Norway This intricate crime novel is incredibly thrilling, and offers some genuine surprises. Finals Krimiside The plot is gruesome, believable and incredibly tense. Bogfidusen Mads Peder Nordbo has written a macabre but engrossing Arctic crime novel about incest and corruption. Jyllands-Posten Lucky Nordbo has given his main character a troubled past, which makes it plausible that he would fling himself fearlessly into investigating the older killings that breath new lifeand deathinto a corrupt political present. Brsen Mads Peder Nordbo writes with great insight into the environment of Greenland, in which the nearly unbearable events play out. Jysk Fynske Medier

I enjoyed reading this, and there were times when I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I thought the big reveal was a bit convoluted. I loved the location. Living in a snowy country seems fascinating and Nuuk seems to have extra harsh weather. At times, I found it a bit hard to follow what was going on, maybe in part by my confusion in the timelines. I liked this book. I would like to reread it someday so I can appreciate it properly.

It's weird to refer to this grim Danish crime thriller as beautiful, but this is exactly that. Kudos to the translator for doing an admirable job conveying the poetic intensity of the author's style. The book takes on Danish colonialism, Inuit exploitation, patriarchy, & corrupt men in power, all wrapped in descriptive passages of Nuuk & Greenlandic ice fields. There is a "girl with tattoo" trope here, but handled sensitively & with thought. 4 ⭐

batsy TW: There are grisly murder scenes, but you never get the sense of a voyeuristic eye describing it just to entertain the reader. This is the first in a series & I look forward to the other books but there is a sense that a Danish man is writing about good Danish men with regards to how they treat Inuit people & women, & while this is certainly welcome, I only hope it doesn't regress to a "white man saviour" trope as it progresses. #netgalley 6y

Kaye I was just leafing through some of your past reads. You are quite a varied reader. You seem to read so many diverse books from so many genres. Are there any you don‘t like or do you try them all ? 6y
batsy @kaye I do like a wide variety and if it sounds interesting, I'll give it a try. Having said that I'm not much of a romance or fantasy reader, and steer clear from most urban paranormal books. Not quite into vampires 😁 Also not into celeb memoirs. 6y
Kaye I don‘t do romance either. That‘d be the bottom of the list, second from bottom is fantasy and sci-fi. I‘m sure there are people who love those books. , which is great. They don‘t sound interesting to me, though. 6y
Tanisha_A Love, I have bought your books, but will take a while to send them out. 😘 6y

"If you wanted to go further than the rocky outskirts of Nuuk, you had to leave your car on the last patch of tarmac, ice or gravel and make your way on foot or by boat. No roads led out of Nuuk. No roads led into it. This applied to every town in Greenland. Nuuk was Nuuk, and the only thing surrounding the town and its sixteen thousand residents was mountains, sky, or sea."

(Pic from Google: Nuuk at night.)

batsy I've had this inexplicable obsession with Greenland since young, and was happy to be approved for this #netgalley ARC. But this fact about no roads connecting the cities and villages within Greenland—because of the ice—has blown my mind. There are roads in Nuuk, and in other cities. Two traffic lights within Nuuk, is what I saw somewhere, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. 6y
elizabethlk I have been in a plane over the southern coast of Greenland during clear skies and daylight. It is so breathtakingly beautiful. 6y
batsy @elizabethlk Aaah, I can only imagine 😍😍 6y

rockpools How fascinating! I might not be moving there though - I like an escape route 😉 6y
DocBrown Just watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty again. Nuuk features in that feature, even though scenes were actually filmed in Iceland. 6y
batsy @RachelO I know exactly what you mean 😆 I'll be asking everyone I meet in Nuuk if they have a boat. 6y
batsy @mdhughes72 I've not watched that! Or read the story. I'm not sure why, I looked it up and it sounds like my kind of thing 🙂 6y
CouronneDhiver That picture reminds me a bit of Iqaluit in Nunavut, Canada 6y
Marina_h Some places like Ittoqqortoormiit it would be difficult sailing from 9 months of the year because of the ice on the ocean. So the best escape route is a private helicopter and plane 😉 and then hoping the weather isn't so bad it's not possible flying 😁 But Greenland is a fascinating country. 6y
Suet624 Good lord. Can you imagine? Nope. Not for me. 6y
batsy @CouronneDhiver I was looking at some pictures of Iqaluit ... I see what you mean! 6y
batsy @Marina_h So the plan now is to make friends with someone who has a helicopter, and also someone with a large cellar of spirits for when the weather is so bad and no one can go anywhere 😁 6y
batsy @Suet624 😆 6y
Cathythoughts Gorgeous pic 6y

Mehso-so

Finished the Galley for this. Had some flaws but interesting to see more about the tensions between indigenous Greenlandic people and the Danes who colonized them. Peter Høeg‘s Smilla‘s Sense of Snow is definitely a better pick.
