Save Yourself: Essays | Cameron Esposito

From rising comedy star Cameron Esposito, called "the future of comedy" by none other than Jay Leno, a book of essays that tackle the big issues explored in her comedy, including gender, sexuality and feminism--and how her Catholic childhood prepared her for a career as an outspoken lesbian comedian in ways the Pope never could have imagined. Cameron Esposito is on her way to becoming a household name, thanks to her unique brand of comedy that doesn't shy away from the issues women (and many men) face today. From sexism and sexuality to white male privilege and self acceptance, Cameron uses humor to break down the barriers that keep us from speaking openly about these topics. Cameron offers funny and insightful essays about everything from coming out (at a Catholic college where being gay can get you expelled) to planning a wedding with two brides (who don't wear dresses) to accepting yourself for who you are--even if you're an awkward tween with an eyepatch (which Cameron was). Full of heart, humor, and cringe-worthy stories anyone who has gone through puberty can relate to, Cameron's debut collection is for that timid Catholic kid in all of us--and the fearless standup yearning to break free.

4☆A humorous and interesting memoir about gender, sexuality and faith. Esposito shares of her coming of age in a religious household of body issues, lesbianism, coming out and her career as a comedian. This memoir will be a comfort to many that relate to Esposito's upbringing and gender fluidity. Her stories are earnest and offer humor and hope. #bookreview #memoir

Cameron Esposito is a stand up comedian who grew up both very Catholic and not realizing she was gay. Much of this memoir is her coming into her sexuality and is both beautiful and painful. She‘s got a great voice and I really enjoyed reading about her life.

Most memoirs by “funny people” are neither funny nor well written, but this one was both. It was great also because it was believable— she wrote about life the way life happens and it was still really funny, and heartfelt, and sad sometimes.

Chapter 9 / I‘m starting to warm to Cameron Esposito 🎧😊🧡 I find her more relatable when she‘s not trying to be funny #pop21 #OnlinePersonality #NonFictionChallenge21 #LGBAuthor #Booked21 #ContainsPhotographs

Megabooks I have no idea who she is! I‘m sometimes not plugged into comedy. Generally not a fan. 4y
Megabooks I can‘t decide what audiobook to read next...the one I thought I‘d read, the narrator sounds too aggressive for how tired I am. 4y
Cinfhen I own the book @Megabooks but I haven‘t picked it up yet...it‘s intimidating for some reason 4y

Cinfhen I wasn‘t familiar with this comedian either @Megabooks and I probably would have bailed but it fit 3 challenge prompts and it‘s not too long. Truth is with about 1.5 hours left , I‘m enjoying it now🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen booked is the only challenge I don‘t suck at lol! 💜 4y
PerksOfBeingABookworm Having watched her stand-up shows and read her book, I can say that the first half of the book pulls pretty heavily from her stand-up material. I don‘t think it translated as well on paper. 4y
Cinfhen I really enjoyed the second half of the memoir @PerksOfBeingABookworm I‘m glad I stayed with it 4y

I don‘t really know much about Cameron Esposito so maybe that‘s why I‘m not really enjoying this audio🤷🏼‍♀️but it‘s mindless enough to help pass the time as I prepare dinner. #pop21 #onlinePersonality #NonFictionChallenge21 #LGBAuthor

Cinfhen Ohhh, and the Audible book contains a PDF with photos so #Booked21 #containsPhotographs 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I remember having the same issue with one I read with Our Shared Shelf, if it‘s a memoir and you don‘t know the person, it can be hard. 4y
Cinfhen It‘s also her self deprecating humor @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that I don‘t find that amusing 4y

This was surprisingly solid! Didn‘t expect much coming in, altho I do like the authors work. One of the highlights for me was hearing about her experiences in the catholic church and how she left it. Cameron‘s writing in this is super accessible, sometimes relatable and overall full of great input on a multitude of topics (coming out, politics, family, working in comedy...) I woulda loved to have read this a few years ago! #LGBTQ #Memoir #2021

Comedians memoir read by her. Raised in a Catholic family and the stories of being gay and brought up in a religious family. Early years are interesting and funny but as the book moves on there are too many stories about her past relationships and her move into the comedy scene. Don‘t think those last parts matter if gay or not, we all have challenges in life. Would go see her live if the chance occurred.

I got the audiobook and really enjoyed it. I‘m a fan of her podcast, Queery, and though I knew many of the stories already, the book fills them out with depth and context. It has the same thoughtful reflection and quick wit she brings to standup. She does a good job reflecting on tough subjects like assault and the impact of keeping yourself a secret, without being overwhelming. Her reading feels genuine and empathetic, and made me laugh out loud.

I‘ve read a couple of good conversion stories lately - people feeling called to various religions. Parts of this book were the opposite, and more familiar, story: growing up strongly of a faith only to find there‘s no space for her true self there.
(There‘s a lot of love, though, and eventual acceptance, too.)

Funny, while honest about her hurts along the way and open about her injurious decisions & mistakes towards others.

A wonderful, vulnerable memoir about lesbian comedian Cameron Esposito's life so far. I found learning about her super Catholic upbringing and how she figured out she was gay in (a super Catholic) college fascinating. She doesn't withhold details that make her look bad (cheating when she didn't knowing how to end her first queer relationship, voting for Goerge W Bush when she was pro-life). Warm, conversational, and laugh out loud funny.
