Cameron Esposito is a stand up comedian who grew up both very Catholic and not realizing she was gay. Much of this memoir is her coming into her sexuality and is both beautiful and painful. She‘s got a great voice and I really enjoyed reading about her life.

Most memoirs by “funny people” are neither funny nor well written, but this one was both. It was great also because it was believable— she wrote about life the way life happens and it was still really funny, and heartfelt, and sad sometimes.

The second half of this memoir was REALLY GOOD. I‘m glad I stuck with it 😁#LGBOwnVoices audio

This was surprisingly solid! Didn‘t expect much coming in, altho I do like the authors work. One of the highlights for me was hearing about her experiences in the catholic church and how she left it. Cameron‘s writing in this is super accessible, sometimes relatable and overall full of great input on a multitude of topics (coming out, politics, family, working in comedy...) I woulda loved to have read this a few years ago! #LGBTQ #Memoir #2021

Book #72: Read this queer memoir in two sittings!

Comedians memoir read by her. Raised in a Catholic family and the stories of being gay and brought up in a religious family. Early years are interesting and funny but as the book moves on there are too many stories about her past relationships and her move into the comedy scene. Don‘t think those last parts matter if gay or not, we all have challenges in life. Would go see her live if the chance occurred.

I got the audiobook and really enjoyed it. I‘m a fan of her podcast, Queery, and though I knew many of the stories already, the book fills them out with depth and context. It has the same thoughtful reflection and quick wit she brings to standup. She does a good job reflecting on tough subjects like assault and the impact of keeping yourself a secret, without being overwhelming. Her reading feels genuine and empathetic, and made me laugh out loud.

I‘ve read a couple of good conversion stories lately - people feeling called to various religions. Parts of this book were the opposite, and more familiar, story: growing up strongly of a faith only to find there‘s no space for her true self there.
(There‘s a lot of love, though, and eventual acceptance, too.)

Funny, while honest about her hurts along the way and open about her injurious decisions & mistakes towards others.

A wonderful, vulnerable memoir about lesbian comedian Cameron Esposito's life so far. I found learning about her super Catholic upbringing and how she figured out she was gay in (a super Catholic) college fascinating. She doesn't withhold details that make her look bad (cheating when she didn't knowing how to end her first queer relationship, voting for Goerge W Bush when she was pro-life). Warm, conversational, and laugh out loud funny.

Thank the goddess for the sun this morning. It makes having to stay at home so much better. I'm also excited to start this memoir of lesbian comedian Cameron Esposito! #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ
