A Bend in the Stars
A Bend in the Stars | Rachel Barenbaum
14 posts | 13 read | 52 to read
For fans of All the Light We Cannot See and The Women in the Castle comes a riveting literary novel that is at once an epic love story and a heart-pounding journey across WWI-era Russia, about an ambitious young doctor and her scientist brother in a race against Einstein to solve one of the greatest mysteries of the universe. In Russia, in the summer of 1914, as war with Germany looms and the Czar's army tightens its grip on the local Jewish community, Miri Abramov and her brilliant physicist brother, Vanya, are facing an impossible decision. Since their parents drowned fleeing to America, Miri and Vanya have been raised by their babushka, a famous matchmaker who has taught them to protect themselves at all costs: to fight, to kill if necessary, and always to have an escape plan. But now, with fierce, headstrong Miri on the verge of becoming one of Russia's only female surgeons, and Vanya hoping to solve the final puzzles of Einstein's elusive theory of relativity, can they bear to leave the homeland that has given them so much? Before they have time to make their choice, war is declared and Vanya goes missing, along with Miri's fianc. Miri braves the firing squad to go looking for them both. As the eclipse that will change history darkens skies across Russia, not only the safety of Miri's own family but the future of science itself hangs in the balance. Grounded in real history -- and inspired by the solar eclipse of 1914 -- A Bend in the Stars offers a heartstopping account of modern science's greatest race amidst the chaos of World War I, and a love story as epic as the railways crossing Russia.

A Bend in the Stars is a satisfying war novel. There‘s bravery, love, and death. And, for most of the book, there is an endearing, admirable, and, ultimately, blind optimism present in Vanya that I fear few of us enjoy today. Singout WW is one of my all-time favorites, assigned to me for two courses, (the common reference novel in feminist critical analysis, and ones of many in race, gender, class, and sexual diversity in modern American novels back in the 90s. It‘s been a while, but I remember really powerful themes about multiple generations, immigration, Chinese and Chinese American culture, gender issues, and mythology. 1y
TheBookHippie @Singout I read feminist literature and WWII constantly as well!!! How wonderful we have that in common as well! 1y
Pogue I have read none of these and am open to all of them. 1y
Singout I meant Woman Warrior, but maybe the war was in there? Can‘t remember any more! 1y
Readergrrl I have read WW too, but that doesn‘t mean I wouldn‘t read it again. They all sound interesting, so I‘m open to any of them!! Boy, this group has some interesting suggestions! I‘ll get my list together asap. I‘m not at home right now. 1y
vonnie862 Oh man...I had to think this over night because these all sound good. So I relied on "eeny miny moe" and got Sleepless Nights. ? Whichever you pick will be good. 1y
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 I was thinking Sleepless Nights as well! I think we will go with that ! 1y

This debut takes one fact in history, an eclipse in 1914 Russia and tells a story of the peril of Russian Jews before WW2. She mixes Einsteins relativity with the story of Miri who has been educated to become a surgeon. Science with history with a love triangle. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wonderful story, so well written. History, science and unconventional romance combined beautifully in this novel. So glad I read this. Thanks @Avanders for sending me a book that otherwise might have languished on my TBR. Highly recommend. Picture is of a plant called yesterday, today and tomorrow, and I think that name fits with this book perfectly.

I LOVED this book. Miri is a surgeon at a time when few women were. Her brother Vanya is trying to complete Einstein‘s Theory of Relativity. WWI breaks out. There‘s action, romance, bravery, science, history, hope. And it‘s set in Russia (always a plus for me.) I wish for an afterward that takes us through the obviously extensive research the author did.

A Bend in the Stars is a riveting book. My only quibble with A Bend in the Stars is that it doesn‘t have an afterword in addition to Barenbaum‘s Q &A explaining the science or history in the book in more detail, and I had a lot of questions by the time I finished reading. Visit pickingbooks.com/blog/a-bend-in-the-stars for the answers to some of the biggest questions I had.

#AyUpAugust #UnderneathTheStars We are all so connected ~ The other day this tagged book was featured as a local debut author at the Philly bookstore I visited with @MicheleinPhilly 🎉 I pointed out the book to Michele, because the author, Rachel Barenbaum spent this past year living in Israel in the same city, I live in. I had no idea Rachel Barenbaum is a Philly native. Unfortunately I wasn‘t able to hear her speak in either Philly or Israel.
