The Governess of Penwythe Hall
The Governess of Penwythe Hall | Sarah E. Ladd
8 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
In the first of a new series from beloved Regency romance author, Sarah Ladd, Delia, a governess to five recently orphaned children, would risk anything to protect them . . . even her heart. After being blamed for her husband's death, Delia Lambourne wants to disappear. Alone and shunned, she sets aside her dream of opening a small school and accepts the position of a governess. For several years she cares for five children, but when both parents die and leave the children orphans, Delia is determined to honor her late employer's last request and stay with the children as they move to their uncle's home, despite the mystery surrounding their inheritance. Landowner Nicholas Trethewey's focus is razor sharp. In a county where people are starving, he is determined to help his tenants modernize their farming techniques and revive the surrounding orchards to rejuvenate the once-flourishing cider industry. Once he marries his fianc, the daughter of a powerful landowner, there will be no limit to what he can accomplish. But when he receives word that he's been named guardian to his deceased brother's five children, his carefully laid plans shatter. Determined to comfort the grieving children and give them a sense of normalcy, Delia will do what is necessary to see that the children's needs are met--even if it means standing up to the new guardian. As she spends more time with Mr. Trethewey, however, she begins to understand him more. When questions over the children's inheritance arise, arguments create a rift in the budding friendship. Despite their differences, Delia and Nicholas come together to fight for their relationship and their family. While learning the true meaning of family and love, the couple must lean on their faith, their wits, and each other to overcome the secrets from their past and solve the mysteries surrounding the children's father's legacy.

The Governess of Penwythe Hall by Sarah Ladd is a real treat! I was instantly hooked by the adventure, mystery, and romance depicted. When I had to, I struggled to put this book down. I adored the unique and vibrant characters. The settings are perfectly crafted as it felt like I was in Cornwall in 1808 with Delia, Jac, and the children. And, I am a big fan of the relationship between Delia and Jac. Highly recommend!

Cordelia Graythorne fled Cornwall and accepted a Governess position after being blamed for her husbands death. Years later the unexpected death and his last request asking her to watch over his five children has her second guessing her choices. She can‘t abandon the children now that they have lost both parents, but their guardian lives in Penwythe Hall, back on the Cornish Coast she tried so hard to forget.

I fell in love with this novel within minutes and the writing is so emotive, the pages flew past. Delia is an endearing, multi-layered character who endures so much in her journey, she has an air of Jane Eyre about her. Our leading man, Jac, is a grounded, country man who doesn‘t be have airs and graces. The two come together to raise the five children left in their care. This focus gives both new purpose and an appreciation for familial love.

This was a sweet story featuring a woman who faces disillusionment, tragic losses and danger but through faith perseveres, overcomes and triumphs to find new love and a brighter future. Well-written if a bit predictable. 4/5⭐️

Thanks to #NetGalley and #ThomasNelson for the ARC.
