When she came to America in 1921, Pura Belpré carried the cuentos folklóricos of her Puerto Rican homeland. Planting Stories is a B picture book that would be great as an AS or SR. It is written by Anika Aldamuy Denise and illustrated by Paola Escobar. It about the very first Puerto Rican Librarian. Awards include the 2020 Pura Belpré Author Honor Book, 2020 Orbis Pictus Honor Book for Outstanding Nonfiction, Smithsonian Ten Best Children‘s Books of 2019 and it is a 2020 ALA Notable Book. At library storytimes & outreach visits, she shared the folktales she had learned through her family‘s oral tradition. These stories weren‘t in books, so she wrote them down & they were published. Art by Paola Escobar captures the feel of the early 20th c by using muted shades of deep colours. Flowers burst forth to symbolize magical elements of story. ?

“Planting Stories� was written by Anika Denise in 2019. This story describes a girl who becomes a librarian and shares stories from her homeland to them. This story was very interesting and I really enjoyed it!

Did I read this while I was on the reference desk and the library was momentarily quiet? Yes. Did the ending make me tear up and almost cry while at said desk? I'm not telling. I love this book, and Pura Belpré is absolutely someone all aspiring librarians should know and keep her spirit in your work! 💖📚

Pura Belpré is one of my librarian heroes. In 1921 she came from Puerto Rico to New York where she got a job at the library as a bilingual assistant. But the library doesn‘t have stories from Puerto Rico, or even books in Spanish, so Pura creates storytimes, puppet theaters and even has her own stories published.

This beautiful story illustrates the legacy of Pura Belpré and how she forever changed libraries.
