pickWhat a beautiful story. A meditation on life and death, trauma and healing, told partly in verse, this story really had the feeling of age-old wisdom and the oral tradition. Sad but hopeful, anchored in a way of viewing the world that encompasses more than what we can see. Not my usual thing at all, but I‘m so glad that I read it.
pickThis was not at ALL what I was expecting, but that‘s not a bad thing. The crimes were very much offscreen, and the plot was actually much more about grief and coping. I also wasn‘t expecting the supernatural elements. It was beautifully written, though a little young in places. I read this for a book challenge for Aboriginal author.
so-soPicked this at a swap. It is YA, a genre that is hit/miss for me. This book falls in the middle. Written from the perspective of 15-year-old Beth Teller, who died in an accident, it is also a murder mystery that needs to be solved by Beth‘s father, a detective. Beth‘s mother is Aboriginal and this novel discusses the Stolen Generations through Isobel Catching, a witness. Catching talks in poems.
so-soQuick simple read. Not sure if it‘s written for children but the writing felt like it was for kids. The story was good because it was short I‘m glad they didn‘t stretch it.

Time to start end of summer quarter reviews. Fingers crossed I get my books finished before the end of the month!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fantastic murder mystery ghost story, partly told in verse, that touches on the Stolen Generation of Australia's Aboriginal people. Author's note at the end gave great insights to the story telling techniques of the Aboriginal people.
pickThis was a wonderful own voices title from Indigenous Australian authors. Despite being less than 200 pages, it covered a lot of things about how Indigenous people were treated under colonization (which we did a lot of similar stuff in Canada). But I think most importantly, it touched on missing & murdered indigenous women AND the 60s Scoop while also lifting up the female characters without pretending racism and abuse is simple to get over & past
Books from Indigenous authors are still pretty rare so I was beyond curious to start this after it was blurbed at a library conference
pickI‘m giving this book a pick, because I think for the right audience, it is probably incredible. For me, who struggles with fantasy, I was mostly confused for the whole book, but it did sort of come together in the end. And it works for #readharderchallenge #ownvoicesoceania which is a really tough prompt.. so 🎉
Completed Spring for #booked2019 with this one by an #indigenousauthor or two to be exact, as this YA novella was written by a brother and sister from the Palyku people of Western Australia.
Enjoyed all 6 books, but ‘Our Souls at Night‘ stood out. Loved it! 💕

This slim YA novel of grief and healing, is told both through a ‘Lovely Bones‘- esque mystery and with traditional Palyku storytelling. It‘s a tale full of strength, love and survival.
The writing is lovely, and this story, rooted in a history of stolen #Indigenous children and colonized homelands, is a heartbreaking one.
And don‘t miss the Author‘s note at the end... it‘s essential..💕
